Walk Down The Memory Lane (Gastronomical lane…)….

Pune

1 Farshid's - remember the seafood/ continental restaurant where i had finished an

entire huge lobster (lobster thermidor – a cooked lobster garnished with white
sauce) (located in an alley behind dp road). We had also ordered for prawn cocktail
which you found quite aldent and raw to your tastes

2 Nandu's paratha - once again dp, where we used to have those fattening
paranthas (with additional dollops of butter!) with watermelon juice ( i wonder what
the marathi name for watermelon was… oops it’s kalingarh). it suddenly comes to
my mind how we were hiding behind their car park once, during a police raid! do
you recall it - vipul was there and we were on our way back after attending a rock
concert nearby. himsi your fav paratha was a paneer paratha

3 Kapila Kathi kebab - the food stall located at the corner of the entry of dp road,
less oily and extremely juicy (making me recall vipul’s adage – why fart and waste
when you can burp and taste). What distinguished it from others was the liberal use
of pudina chutney

4 Cafe Olympia - another fav kathi place which we used to frequent, located on
the other side of mg road beside a cinema( forgotten the name, chip in the name if
you can)

5 Woods - initially located at Mundwa where we used to go thanks to huzi and his
old fiat. the standard fare was chicken breast sizzler (where if I am not off the track
one got a generous helping of 4 chunky breasts of chicken served on a bed of
sizzling rice and minimal amount of “ghasphus” & the essential fries) along with
iced tea. this restaurant was later shifted to north main road, koregaon park along
with a live band (much to our disliking and inconvenience)

6 The Place - located adjacent to Westend theater was one of my fav, though you
preferred Woods more. Chicken Piri Piri Shaslik was what i used to order. Khera had
ordered for the second sizzler while we were busy at our first quarter of the sizzler.

7 Zamu's - another sizzler place which was frequented more by Gaurav (dp
road).both you and i had promised not to revisit the place owing to their generous
helping of cabbage on the wooden platter!

8 The Bakery store diagonally opp Nandu's ( was it Hot Bread's? or Just
Baked?) where we freaked out on their freshly baked cakes and pastries

9 Cake n Counter - the bakery owned by the quirk irani couple next to shamun's
where our standard fare was walnut cake. much to our annoyance the couple would
resume begin business extremely late and no matter what the demand would have
a countable number of cakes n pastries selling which they shut their shop!

10 Gobbles - another dessert place located on Gera plaza on the left near north
main road , before the flyover on the return journey from koregaon park.

11 Prem's - located behind sophie's bookshop. Wadu was gaga over potato soup
(which actually turned out to be quite good) .the waiting period was so frustrating &
killing.all of us (comprising 15 guys) had a fight with the waiter and came back after
placing orders

12 Riverview - North indian restaurant - the food was okay though ambience
was great , open air restaurant with a great view though mosquito infested at night.
A crystal pyramid greeted visitors at the entrance.

13 ABC Farms - comprised 4 restaurants

a) Sala Thai - the treetop thai restaurant where surprisingly the green curry
items were somehow tastier than the red curries & the steamed rice smelt of lemon
grass which later on you got hooked to! (as usual, nothing shocking !)
b) Swiss cheese cottage - we used to frequent it quite regularly then
owing to deterioration in quality we stopped. remember the fondue we had ordered
along with a huge team of revellers in one of the new year's celebration.
c) Soul - located at the end of river view they used to host live bands on all
fridays. we had never visited it.
d) Monalisa/ Bina's Golconda - needless to say anything regarding mona
which used to be our italian dhaba for all practical purposes. when monalisa moved
out to be situated in one of the alleys near german bakery, it was substituted by
Bina's golconda biriyani - very inconsistent

14 Dorabjee's Biriyani - another delight introduced to me by both Gaurav n you.

My fav was chicken dhanshak( available only on sundays) and off course chicken
biriyani

15 Malaka Spice - probably visited once or twice, overtly priced. we preferred sala
thai than this place. Banana fritters come to my mind which was quite an unique
dessert- fried banana in the shape of dominos dipped in honey!

16 Arthur's theme - a small french restaurant which i had the audacity to visit only
once during those days along with jinesh only to be aghast with their ridiculously
smaller portions and heavy pricing

17 Along the lane where arthur's theme is located were two more restaurants - One
was a burger joint famous for its fish n chips & the other a parsi joint whose
name i can't recollect

18 German bakery - overhyped which we never liked except as a detour during

the book buying sprees

19 La Pizzeria - the only time when we preferred veg stuff over non veg. Zen pizza
was one of those exotic pizzas which came covered. yummy!

20 Jaws - the burger joint most frequented and lamented by us. This is one of the
turning points in our lives where we learnt to listen to rock music (Switch was the
pune based band which used to play here)

21 Ah Ling – our favorite Chinese joint till psychologically overthrown by the

subsequent entry

22 Mainland china – do I need to elaborate on our eating n drinking spree

23 was it Bombay Brasserie next to mainland china? where the north Indian
buffet platters was simply out of the earth and was at par with delhi standards, if
not already better!

24 Burger King – the holy grail of pune students

25 Marzorin – those irresistible chutney sandwhiches followed by mocha shakes .

one of the high points in our mundane lives. A daily trip during those second year
hospital trips

26 Kayani bakery – those shrewsberry biscuits!

28 Budhani wafers – the quintessential bhakadwadis…

Page6

29 Street side dosa idli stall & Vada pav/ Ragda Paties stall near aurora
towers

27 Ghanshyam shakes - one near our college and the other far away . Chiku
shakes , strawberry shakes and sitaphal shakes

27 Chitale bandhu – those typical ghee based cholesterol producing typically

maharashtrian sweet

28 Dosa Hut & was it American Diner (?) – along the same road where Ah Ling
was there were two restaurants probably owned by the same group. The former as
the name suggests dealt with dosa and idli with a difference. Most of them were
available with chicken stuffing which we felt was a relatively new concept. The
latter dealt with salads which were sold according to the weight.

29 The Chinese room – located in East Street was this relatively costly restaurant
which was much more authentic in taste

30 Chung Fa (?) – diagnonally opposite to the Chinese room was this place. Used
to visit during our terminal years

31 Some (Shaen?) – the name itself was a matter of discussion amongst us.
Located at Kondwa which we used to visit during our terminal years, very near to Dr
Jog’s residence/ clinic

32 Eddie’s Kitchen – one of those one time visits owing once again to Gaurav /
huzi where we ended up khera’s leg so much so that he was livid. I was the sole
benefactor! Needless to say typically oily Indian Chinese but good to taste.

33 Panchami – near swargate was our only recourse on Sunday evenings

especially when we were on shoe string budget. Paneer butter masala along with
tandoori roti , raita and masala papad is what I remember.

34 Jai Bhawani- another old time fav very close to our college where we used to go
right after college esp after exams . Masala papad, raita , a whole plate of ring cut
onions dashed with local chaat masala , chicken adraki, with kaali daal (daal
makhani) was our standard course inside this shady and dimly lit alcohol smelling
place

35 Shaan-E-Punjab – more often home delivered was their exquisite Daahi

chicken which is embedded in our memory. Matched only by their thick lassi

36 Tiffany- the name is enough!

37 (Konkan food joint at Katraj) specializing in maharastrian /Konkani fish items

Page6

38 Maharastrian restaurant near Satara specializing in bada pav

Walk Down The Memory Lane (Gastronomical lane…)…. Pune

39 Fulora Garden – was this the place where I won a bet (swallowing the water
from my used finger bowl infront of other diners mostly middle class
maharashtrians much to gaurav;s discomfiture in losing it eventually). Eventually
we had take a lift inside a truck making it so memorable

40 The shack behind our hostel nivara where we used to bada pav and cutting chai
every evening after college

41 Another dilapidated bungalow (Park?) where we visited .years later i

chuckle to myself over the ironic nomenclature of this place where most of the
physically & mentally challenged employees were found serving tables! served by
that idotic, mentally challenged , abnormally gaited uttam to have that orange
colored egg rice/ magi along with piping hot tea and or juices. This is the same
place where you and i had got a dressing down from amit mehra, gaurav and nitin
after our first motorbike ride from mg rd

42 jughead’s near shaane Punjab was another place which had caught our fancy
for snacks after college hours. Our interest in this place was short lived

43 mickey auntie’s , ruchika (where I loved methi flavoured butter chicken) , the
shopping mall (name ?) at our hostel frontside where we used to have the famous
club snadwhich, our regular dhaba in 3rd year (?) where we loved the paneer chilli
and chlli chicken

44)Konkan Express(?) way ahead of kothrud where we have gone a couple of

times for malwani food

45) Matsyagandha – another malwani joint at kothrud frequented by me along

with pramod

46) Radhika – Bengali restaurant at senapati bapat marg where you have gone
with me and loved luchi alur dum along with sandesh

47) Charcoal pit – in mg road opposite aurora towers another tongue licking north
Indian dish oriented place

48) Blue Nile – the catchy goat hoarding advocating “Pleased to meet you, and I
have meat to please you” was another fav irani restaurant dishing out the typical
irani biriyani finished by the lovely caramel custard which you were so fond of

49) Café George – located in east street was our fancy during the terminal years.
Keema served out here was pretty good and once again caramel custard completed
our course

50) Geoffrey’s – located in the same complex as crossword and linearly beside
San Marzano and Either/Or was t eventually his multi cuisine restaurant which
Page6

made us taste pastas of different nature (tomato based or white sauce) along with a

dash of olive oil. The pepper crusher was an additional equipment we must have
used for the first time in our lives.

51)Was it Café Naaz which eventually gave way to the Barrista at MG Road. we
were regular there for the chocolate scones with hot tea

52) Vaishali – nothing that I write can cumulatively talk about my memories or
yours. the psychological impact of this place is immense

53) Ruchira cottage – the place which taught you to learn eating prawns and gave
me one of the most memorable event in my life can’t be captured in words. The
place, the ambience, the food , the company , everything about this place was
unusual and can’t be re-created with money. Thank god I have shared your memory
capability in this instance

54) Ambrosia – was more of an ambience and extra-curricular place than an eating
joint. Located away from our hostel over a small hillock

55) The Pithla Bhakri at Sihagarh fort and the Anda bhurjee at railway station or
cooked by bhagwat is incomparable even today
