1 KD 500 AMPLIFIER
1.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The KD 500 power amplifier is designed to operate in the UHF TV, IV and V broadcasting band. It
is suitable to work in Analog Video Broadcasting as a power amplifier for combined or splitted
audio and video carriers, giving up to 550 W peak sync power output with perfect linearity. It is
also perfectly suitable for Digital Terrestrial Television with very high linearity up to 200 Wrms.
It is composed of two RF independent amplifier modules, LD-MOS Technology, combined together
using high isolation splitter and combiner circuits. The maximum power of each module is around
300 W peak sync for analog video, so the full amplifier is able to give over 500 W peak sync for
analog video power.
The new LD-MOS technology allows to considerably reduce the intermodulation and non-linearites
respect to the traditional BJT Technology, making this amplifier ideal for analog and also digital
video applications.
A highly over-dimensioned heatsink allows correct operating conditions even in hard climatic
situation.
This amplifier is fitted into a single 19” 6U box that contains a switching POWER SUPPLY, the RF
POWER unit and the OUTPUT BAND PASS – NOTCH FILTER for perfect spectrum cleaness.
In case of fault of the amplifier or antenna system, a protection board lowers automatically the
output power, in order to bring back the operating conditions to a safe area without causing a
system shut down.
The protection board reduces the output power in case of:
- V.S.W.R. too high.
- Outlet air or heat sink temperature too high (OVER HEAT).
- Forward power too much.
A front panel digital meter combined with LED indicators allows the user to check all the most
important parameters of the equipment: forward and reflected powers, power supply voltage and
current, outlet air temperature and heat sink temperature. Internally to the power outline are present
two metering directional couplers to measure the FWD and REF output power levels. The measures
are visualized directly on the digital LCD display. The user can select the measure easily by means
of a push button placed on the front panel.
It is provided with voltage spike protection to safeguard it against external destructive events, that
may cause transistor damage.
An output three cavities band pass filter with two notch permits a pure spectral signal outside the
desired channel and avoids spurious emissions due to intermodulation product, in order to comply
fully with all international standards.
A forced air flow system serves as cooling for the rack.

3 INSTALLATION
PREVENTION OF ACCIDENTS
When it is used in normal applications and within the parameters defined in the technical
specifications, this equipment does not endanger health and safety, provided that normal operating
and engineering safety practices are observed and that it is used only by authorized, trained and
qualified personnel.
CAUTION: Before turn the equipment on, ensure that all RF Loads, RF cables and connectors are
properly connected. To prevent damage to the amplifiers, it is essential that either the feeder and
antenna system or the dummy load have a good in band return loss.
Failure to observe the above caution and also the installation instructions detailed in the following
section and in the user’s manual may cause damages to the amplifiers for which DB Elettronica
cannot be considered responsible.
- A too high environmental temperature (in any case not higher than 45°C) shall cause a non-
adequate rack cooling putting the equipment in hard working conditions.
- An air conditioner should be installed to keep the room temperature constant even in case of
external temperature variation.
Features
• 3kW UHF/VHF III Band directional coupler
• No matching regulations
Specifications
Return loss >30dB
Coupling -33 to -53dB (any channel)
Directivity >30dB
Connectors 7/16 Female
Weight 0,5kg
Operating Temperature -10 to +50°C
Inside the RF AMPLIFIER cabinet there is a board able to amplify the rectified continuous voltage
component taken from the directional coupler.
The continuous voltage available on the output can be adjusted using the trimmers R2 and R3, and
it used to display the metering FWD or REFL signal or to show the alarm and control unit status
and the metering REFL.
1) VSWR protection: in case of high reflected power this protection operates on the polarization of
the LD-MOSs so the output power is reduced to 0 Watts. The alarm led will light on the fornt panel
and the equipment will remain at 0 Watts of output power for about 10 seconds. After that it will try
again to increase the output power monitoring the reflected power and repeating the same steps in
case the values are not changed in the meantime. If this procedure is repeated 10 times in half an
hour without changes, the equipment passes in the SYSTEM ALARM status with the gates
protected and the power supplies completely OFF. To exit the SYSTEM ALARM status you need
to maintain pressed the ESC button and press at the same time the ENTER button. Press ESC after
tis operation to return to the normal status menu.
2) Max Temp. protection: this protection operates checking the heatsink temperature. There are
two steps in the protection: the first start when the temperature is higher of the first threshold and
remove the RF signal on the equipment, the second starts if the temperature continues to grow and
becomes higher of the second threshold passing the equipment in the SYSTEM ALARM status.
The two thresholds are setted by the factory.
When the protection is active the front panel “ALARM” led lights on.
3) minimum level protection: the equipment increase the output power only if the input power
level is stable and higher that a fixed level. If this condition is not present the equipment shows an
alarm on the front panel.
4) Over drive protection: When the input power becomes greater than a preset value (and so the
output power becomes greater than 1500W peak sync), the protection acts reducing the the FWD
power to 0 Watts and the ALARM led on the front panel lights on. To exit this alarm is sufficient ot
reduce the input power level. If 10 alarms of Over drive protection will happen in about half an
hour, the equipment will pass in the SYSTEM ALARM status.

This digital measure instrument allows to monitor directly on the LCD display the parameters of the
amplifier: the forward transmitted power (FWD), the reflected power (RFL), the DC supply
voltages (Vpa) and currents (Ipa) of the LD-MOS modules, the temperature of the air inside the
amplifier module and the temperature of the heatsink. The measure selection is allowed by means of
4 push buttons placed on the front panel.

ENTER UP BUTTON
To access the measure values on the display you can enter the MENU POWER pressing ENTER
and see the measures of input power (FWD IN), output power (FWD OUT) and reflected output
power (REFL OUT). For the driver module and each amplifier module it is possible to access to the
voltage (Vpa) and current (Ipa) measures entering the MENU VOLTAGE/CURRENT while the air
and heatsink temperature can be visualized entering the TEMPERATURE MENU.
Each time an alarm appears on the equipment, the alarm led will light on the fornt panel and the
type of alarm will be displayed on the LCD display.
In case the equipment enter the SYSTEM ALARM status, the user can exit maintaining pressed the
ESC button and pressing at the same time the ENTER button. After this operation press again ESC
to enter again the normal status menu.
• 1 mains switching board delivering 48V in continuous operation. This module gives the correct
voltage to supply 2 LD-MOS power amplifier modules and power amplifier driver module.
1. the efficiency is 80% higher hence provides a considerable reduction of the internal heating,
thus simplifying the cooling system;
2. a lower thermal and mechanical stress for associated components, such as transformer, diodes,
rectifier bridges is inflicted;
3. the power supply voltages at the output of the switching regulators are constant even in case of
wide main fluctuations (± 15 %).
10 MAINTENANCE
Periodic control of the air filter with frequency to be defined according to the environmental
conditions.
WARNING: In any case, any modification or variation must be made only with DB
Elettronica Telecomunicazioni S.p.A. authorization, otherwise voiding the warranty.
1) The filter can be tuned on all the channels of the UHF TV band (470 - 862 MHz) and
according to all worldwide standards (4.5 - 6.5 MHz intercarrier). The bandpass section is
composed by the middle resonators, while the two resonators apart are the notches. The filter
is symmetrical; therefore, the choice of the lowest and the highest notch is indifferent.
2) The bandwidth regulation is accomplished by varying the insertion of the two Post Screws (B,
C and D), which are located between the bandpass resonators; the insertion of the Post Screws
increases the bandwidth. In order to execute this regulation it is necessary to loosen every lock
nut by means of a pipe key no. 19. The Post Screws A and B must be set equally compared to
filter body, while the middle one might be regulated slightly differently in order to achieve a
correct equiripple response.
3) The input/output couplings are regulated by means of the two shafts (Coupling Stub H and I),
available removing the protection caps opposite to each N type connector. The regulation is
carried out with a flat key n° 8, considering that when the operating flattenings are parallel to
the longer side of the filter the coupling is maximum, otherwise if orthogonal the coupling is
minimum.
4) The frequency response symmetry is determined by the insertion of the previously mentioned
shafts; these shafts can be set after loosening the correspondent hexagonal clamps with a pipe
key no. 16. Once locked, these clamps set out also the twist friction of the couplings.
2) Tune the bandpass section on the desired frequency channel, and match input and output until a
correct response is achieved. During this step, the tunings of the two notches (A and E) shall be
kept well far from the bandpass response. Regulate the bandwidth at -35 dB to the ends of span
(E.g. std. G: BW (-35dB) = 27,5MHz). The input/output couplings may influence the external
resonators; therefore, it will be necessary to repeatedly fix the formers after the latters in small
steps. The frequency response must be centered, with the same attenuation values at both sides
of the screen.
3) Tune the two notches (A and E) to P.V. - INTERCARRIER and P.A. + INTERCARRIER
frequencies. This will vary the response and matching. Adjust the response acting on the
bandpass tunings.
4) Improve the calibration alternatively acting on two sides according to this sequence:
• Regulate the couplings;
• Re-tune notches if they have to be moved;
• Re-tune the bandpass resonators;
5) Execute the sequence in small steps aiming to improve the matching. Check the response
symmetry, and correct it if needed according to the following criterion: if the lowest notch is
much more emphasized than the highest one it is necessary to insert the Coupling Stubs,
otherwise if the highest notch is more emphasized than the lowest one it is necessary to extract
the Coupling Stubs.
6) At the end of the tuning process, lock the trim points (Post Screws and Coupling Stubs) and
assemble the coupling protection caps on the filter.
