ARCHITECTURAL ECO-TECHNOLOGY

Course Leader: Asist. Prof. PhD. Arch. Daniel N. Armenciu

- SPECIALTY ELECTIVE COURSE 5th YEAR -

Second semester / 2018-2019

1. PREMISES / OBJECTIVES

The discipline aims to acquire a general knowledge of sustainable design, in order to prepare the
student to cope with the challengings of the following years regarding the evolution of the
international phenomenon of sustainability in the field of architecture.
The knowledge the students come in contact with will be applied to the "Optional Ecological
Architecture Design" subject. Thus, they will acquire effective sustainable design skills, that will guide
them towards conceptual and technological choices, adapted to the current realities with which the
contemporary architect works. The major objective of the two disciplines is to create a personal
critical method of analysis and interpretation of the context in which an intervention is to be
inserted, thus generating a sustainable, compatible architecture.
The attendance at some courses of external guests, coming from the professional environment,
research or non-governmental organizations, active participants in the current phenomena of the
field, offers the opportunity to familiarize the students with the professional reality in Romania.

2. THEMES OF THE COURSE

 Concepts of sustainable development in architecture;

 Sustainable approach to architectural design; Bioclimatic design;
 Use of alternative energies; ("solar architecture", "green architecture", "zero energy building"
etc.)
 Human comfort;
 Spatial conformation of buildings;
 Supporting technologies for sustainable buildings;
 The behavior of buildings’ envelope in relation with the environment;
 Policies for the implementation of energy efficiency measures;
 Green Building certification systems;

3. COURSE DEVELOPMENT

The way of organizing the lectures is meant to be an interactive one, involving the active
participation of the students. Starting from the general notions that introduce the course topics,
cumulative specific notions are added. Finally, each theme is presented by groups of students who
have the opportunity to interchange with the rest of the class one of the following variants:
 Presentation of a reference project from the international architecture practice (completed over
the past 20 years or in the process of being completed);
 Making a model, or layout of a model, to facilitate site analysis or architectural objects (sky
model, solar studies, fluid dynamics etc.);
This part of the course intends to facilitate practical operation with the presented notions and
therefore enhancing their applicability in design.
4. EVALUATION CRITERIA

Obtaining credits related to the discipline involves going through the scheduled activities during the
courses and obtaining a minimum mark of 5 (five) as a final result of the following evaluations:
a) Preliminary evaluation (40%) - Presentation during the lectures of one of the two options
described above. The working groups will be formed by 3-5 students, formerly approved by the
teacher. The presentation is not a compulsory condition in order that the final theoretical paper
to be taken into consideration.
b) Final evaluation (60%) - Elaboration of a theoretical paper, consisting of at least 10,000
characters (about 5 pages A4), which justifies the sustainability of the intervention of the project
developed in parallel to the "Optional Ecological Architecture Project" discipline. The students
that are not attending the Optional project of Ecological Architecture, must develop the
theoretical paper following one of the subjects discussed during the courses.

• For having access to the exam, it is mandatory to attend 50% of the course activities.
• Students who previously failed the exam may be reexaming without complying the mandatory
attendance condition, only if they have complied this constraint before.
• The final mark is rounded according to the university regulations.
• Cases of fraud (copying / plagiarism) are noted with 1.
• It is mandatory to attend exam sessions in the session.
• Reporting of errors regarding the final marks or possible consultations can be made within one
week after the results being displayed.

5. EDITING RULES OF THE FINAL THEORETICAL PAPER

The theoretical paperwork will contain text of at least 10,000 characters. Extracts from the parts of
the "Optional Ecological Architecture Project" can be inserted. At the same time, if necessary, it is
permissible to insert external images or references, specifying their source.

The structure of the paper will contain the following sections (chapters):
- Premises
- The actual content of the work
- Conclusions
- Bibliography
Note: Sub-chapters may be included, depending on the particularities of the project.

The elaboration of the paper will highlight:

- Site design related to the site study;
- Description of the proposed development and intervention concept;
- Description of the spatial configuration of the proposed assembly / building;
- Technological choices that support design choices;

Text Format:
• A4 page size, with 2,5cm edges.
• Font Calibri 11; line spacing 1,5.
• All pages will be numbered.
• Text formatting (titles, bullets, list bulletins, etc.) will be as simple and reduced as strictly necessary.
• Do not use colored fonts.
• Do not use a tab and repeat spaces.

recommended. In particular, finding and selecting the bibliographic references appropriate to the
concrete case studied is the student's obligation and a criterion for the evaluation of the papers
presented.
