EDUC 567: Extended Practicum - Restorative Justice Practices

Explain your rationale for selecting the specific artifact in 250 words or less. Be succinct and avoid repetition, making the
connection between the content or purpose of the artifact to the standard as clearly as possible. Why did you select this
item? What instructional/ learning, subject matter competency, case manager role, or professional development skills
does it represent?
I chose this experience because I was educated on different restorative practices that promote social
development where each student is treated fairly and respectfully. This class is designed to support students for
positive behavior to ensure a climate in which all students can learn through restorative practices. While in this
class we learned a lot about restorative circles and practiced them in class everyday which showed us how to
create a classroom routines and procedures that creates a positive learning environment. For example, creating
a community circle in the classroom to build trust with peers and the teachers and also respecting peers and
the teacher, which also allows the teacher to better understand students and how they might be feeling. Also in
this class, we picked a focus student in our extended practicum that needed additional behavior support in the
classroom. Then based on their needs we created positive interventions with the goal of supporting the student
and giving them the best opportunity to learn in the classroom. In extended practicum every day, I was able to
observe how my cooperating teacher maintained routines, procedures, and norms for positive behavior to
ensure a climate in which all students can learn. Then I was able to practice this in the classroom with the
students.

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW – BASED ON EVIDENCE OF PERFORMANCE-BASED COMPETENCY

State your present perception of what you want to achieve during your passage from preliminary to clear credential
teacher, in 250 words or less. Be succinct and avoid repetition, making the connection between the content or the
purpose of the artifact to the standard as clearly as possible. What is your goal related to this area of focus? What do you
anticipate will be a measurable outcome related to instructional/classroom practices & student learning?
As I transition from a preliminary to clear credential teacher, I would like to gain more experience and
confidence on how to establish procedures and routines in the classroom. I have been able to see how to
continue procedures and routines but I think it would benefit me if I was able to observe how to establish
these routines while maintaining classroom management. Also I would like to know how to establish
restorative practices in the classroom that promotes social development and the students take it seriously. The
first step to reaching the goal of establishing routine in the classroom is talking to my cooperating teacher on
how they established this at the beginning of the year. One way I could measure the outcome of restorative
practices is getting student input and feedback on what they felt was effective and what things needed
improvement.
