New SHADAC Brief Released on American Community
Survey Logical Edits
SHADAC has released a new technical brief, "A Summary of the American
Community Survey Logical Edits Applied to Health Insurance Coverage,"
describing the impact of the logical edits applied to the 2009 American
Community Survey (ACS). Logical edits are a data processing technique
that edits some survey responses to be consistent with other information
obtained in the survey. This brief describes the logical edits applied to the
health insurance coverage items in the ACS and describes how to obtain ACS
estimates and microdata that incorporate the logical coverage edits.
Final Workshop Summary Released by National
Academies Press
The final edition of a new report, "Databases for Estimating Health Insurance
Coverage for Children: A Workshop Summary," is available from The
National Academies Press. This report summarizes the proceedings of a
workshop convened by the Committee on National Statistics in June 2010 to
critically examine the various databases that could provide national and
state-level estimates of low-income uninsured children and could be
effectively used as criteria for monitoring children's health insurance
coverage. SHADAC researchers Lynn Blewett, Sharon Long and Joanna
Turner presented at this workshop.

Stan Dorn to Evaluate Louisiana's Express Lane
Enrollment Initiative
SHARE grantee Stan Dorn, of the Urban Institute, has launched an
evaluation of Louisiana's efforts to implement automatic enrollment and
data-driven eligibility procedures. This evaluation will assess the impact of
Louisiana's enrollment initiative on coverage rates, administrative costs, and
service utilization patterns. The study will also include qualitative analyses
of family experiences with Louisiana's new enrollment methods, along with
the perceptions of policymakers and key stakeholders. Click here to view a
presentation by Stan including introductory information about Louisiana's
enrollment efforts, along with information from his SHARE-funded evaluation
of enrollment efforts in Massachusetts.

New Brief Focuses on Reasons Why Coloradans Lack
Insurance Coverage
A new brief released by the Colorado Health Institute, "Colorado Household
Survey Issue Brief: Why Coloradans Are Uninsured and the Likely Effects of
Health Care Reform," points to reasons why Coloradans lack health
insurance. Analysis of data from the 2008-09 Colorado Household Survey
shows that the reasons Coloradans cited for lacking health insurance varied
by demographic and employment-related factors, but overwhelmingly the
number one reason was cost. Not having access to employer-sponsored
insurance was the second most frequently cited reason.

Massachusetts Releases 2010 Health Insurance Coverage

Estimates
The Massachusetts Division of Health Care Finance and Policy (DHCFP) has
announced the results of its latest Massachusetts Health Insurance Survey.
The survey shows that more than 98 percent of residents have health
insurance, which reflects an increase since 2009. Only 1.9 percent of state
residents remain uninsured in 2010. Nearly every major demographic group
is within a few percentage points of universal coverage. View the full report,
