YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL
EXTRA
Grants requests:
The issue of council grants and sponsorship was touched upon
under 'Correspondence' at the July meeting of Youghal Town
Council. Cllr Liam Ryan, "without naming names" referred to a
few applications received. In one instance, he said the council
"does not do sponsorship" such as nominal sum contributions, but
allocates funding at the yearly budget meeting in December.
Another applicant had applied for 2009 funding too late and the
application was deferred to the 2010 budget meeting.
Church Street:
The meeting concluded, as usual, under Any Other Business
(AOB). Cllr Revins observed that newly-resurfaced Church Street
"looks fantastic" and complimented the Nook on it’s associated
painting. Town Clerk Liam Ryan said he was optimistic that the
County Council will agree to his proposal that the Town Council
fund 50% of a painting scheme for the old library, which was look-
ing very dilapidated in its replenished surroundings.

Parents should be alert to the fact that while on holiday abroad the
safety standards at beaches and in pools may not necessarily be the
same as in Ireland. Similarly when participating in aquatic activ-
ities, be mindful of your safety and that of children. The simple
rule is: if in doubt - stay out!
The public should take responsibility to avoid becoming a drown-
ing statistic by following some key water safety tips that will help
keep them safe:

allow children to go immediately to the pool until you have
checked out the safety arrangements. On many occasions there
may not be any lifeguard on duty.
Swim only after digesting food and never after taking alcohol or
immediately after a long journey.
Always swim with others, never alone.
Be particularly careful of young children wandering off.
Constantly supervise children/baby pools that may be next to the
main pool without any barrier between them.
Check for pool depth markings. There may not be any so you
must check the depths yourself if you are a competent swimmer.
Ensure that you do not dive into shallow water.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
YOUGHAL 1-13 V DOUGLAS 4-12
The much antisipated replay took place in Lisgoold on Tuesday
7th of July. Douglas started very brightly scoring in the first
minute. The first half saw Youghal self destruct as they leaked 3
soft goals on 5, 14 and 28 minutes to effectively end the tie as a
contest. Douglas led at the break by 3-5 tom 0-4 without dominat-
ing but found scores easier to come by than Youghal who lacked
the presence of a scoring forward. Youghal to their credit fought
hard in the second half and managed to reduce the defecit to just
5 points at one stage. Bill Cooper was superb at centre forward but
again the lack of fire power up front saw Douglas home on a
scoreline of 4-12 to 1-13.

RUSSELL ROVERS 1-8
An early goal from James O'Mahony settled Youghal down but
they conceded a soft goal midway through the first half to leave
the visitors leading by 1-5 to 1-4 at the break. Great work from
Andrew Curtin who was a thorn in Rovers side all evening saw
Victor Cahill hit the back of the net and this was followed by a
superb goal by James O'Mahony who ran straight through the
defence and drove the ball past the Rovers Keeper. Connections
were pleased with the result but know there is improvement need-
ed to have a chance of securing the Championship. Next up is Lotto presentation to Phil Cullinanne who was receiving the cheque for 3,500 euro

Nikita Savage to represent

Ireland at the Celtic
International in Wales
Nikita Savage will once again wear the
Irish Singlet as she competes for Ireland
in the Celtic International in Camarthen in
Wales on Saturday August 1st. Nikita
was selected to represent Ireland follow-
ing her outstanding performance in the
All Ireland U18 Pole Vault
Championships held in Tullamore Co. Nikita Savage and Eimear Kelly winners in Pole Vault.
Offaly on Saturday July 11th. Nikita won
the U18 title with a new championship
best performance of 3.20 metres, beating
the old mark by 20 centimetres. She
opened the competition with a first time
clearance of 2.80 metres and she then
equalled the record with her next jump of 3.00 metres. She set the
new record of 3,20 with a first time clearance and she was very
unlucky at 3.40 metres when she came so close on her third
attempt but alas it was not to be on this occasion. This was just
another outstanding performance by Nikita as she has dominated
the juvenile Pole vault scene this season. Nikita has been ranked
third in the senior Women's Pole Vault ranking this year both in the
Indoor and Outdoor lists. She has also made it onto the Senior
Women's All Time Best list for Pole Vault in 5th place which for Adam McCarthy, Cian Greene and Daniell Smiddy in Tullamore
some one so young is a major achievement.
Nikita will compete in the Celtics for the second year in a row as
she was also part of the Irish team that travelled to Scotland last
year and she will be hoping to improve on her third place finish.
This will be Nikita's second trip to Wales this season as she com-
peted for Ireland in the Celtic cup U20 indoors in Cardiff last
February.

MAY O’ MAHONY 21st July
In Loving Memory of my Mum, Danny Twohig
Late of Rath Kinsalebeg
who died 23rd July 2007
Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there,
I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow,
No words can say, how I feel today, Or feel in my heart
since you went away, I hide my tears, when I speak your name,
I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain,
But the pain in my heart remains the same. I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush,
I miss you when I need a friend, Always on you I could depend, I am in the graceful rush of beautiful birds in circling flight.
I speak your name with tears unseen, Wishing your absence was I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom,
only a dream. I miss you from the house, I miss you from the chair, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing,
And it’s worse on special occasions, When I know you won’t be there.
I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry,
No farewell words were spoken, No time to say goodbye,
You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why
I am not there - I do not die.

Sadly missed by your Daughter Christine, Son-in-Law Love always Alison, Kim, Ross, Christopher, Stephen,

YOUTHREACH STUDENTS VISIT
LIMERICK PRISON AS PART OF
THE COPPING ON PROGRAMME
A group of students from the Youthreach Training Centre took part
in the Copping On programme during the past academic year.
Copping On is the National Crime Awareness Initiative, estab-
lished in 1996, developed out of a model of good practice by
Youthreach and the Garda National Juvenile Office. This pro-
gramme arose out of a clearly identified need to respond in a com-
prehensive, holistic way to the issue of offending behaviour
amongst young people. Its focus is the implementation of a nation-
al crime awareness programme with young people at risk, and the
development and support of local multi-agency responses to the
issue of youth offending.
Mike Keating, Declan Mathews and Gordon Nicholson pictured at the Stryker 4- This programme was facilitated by Ms Nicola Lucey of Youghal
mile road race at Carrigtwohill
Youth Project and culminated with a visit to a Prison. This visit
YOUGHAL RUGBY CLUB took place in March when 8 students and 2 staff members traveled
to Limerick Prison. The prison visit proved to be one of the most
GOLF CLASSIC valuable aspects of the programme, as it gave the students first-
hand knowledge of what life is like "inside". As part of the whole
Copping On programme students usually meet with a prisoner
who will speak to them about the realities of prison life. The stu-
dents met with a young male prisoner who spoke very frankly and
honestly with them about his own personal circumstances and why
he had ended up in prison.
On their return to Youthreach the students evaluated the visit and
recorded their findings in the form of a colourful wall hanging on
which each student outlined their feelings on leaving the prison.
This art-work was displayed in the Copping On Spring 2009
Newsletter.

YOUGHAL CYCLING CLUB

Club members travelled to Killarney on the first weekend of July
to take part in the annual Ring of Kerry cycle challenge. The event
which is in its 26th year, raises funds for several charities and to
date has raised over 3 million euro. A lot of sweat has been shed
Sal Tivy from Perks Funfair with Perkie over the Kerry roads to achieve that figure and every year the
event grows in popularity. Youghal CC had a large contingent of
members make the trip to Killarney for the 112 mile round trip.
Met Eireann website was very busy in the 24hours leading up to
the event with cyclists fearing high winds and heavy rain for the
day. Fortunately Saturday morning brought dry conditions and
even sunny spells with a slight tailwind leaving Killarney, perfect
cycling conditions. Upwards of 3,000 set out from Killarney with
the first stop in Cahersiveen for refreshments before the climb of
Coomakista and onwards with the second stop of the day in
Kenmare. After Kenmare with the only rain shower of the day to
cool us down Molls gap was the only obstacle standing between
the group and the finish in Killarney from which we set off from
early that morning. Everyone had a good day out on the bike
which makes those Sunday morning training Spins worthwhile
when you sometimes feel like turning over for a few more
zzzzzzz. New members Tony and Ina Walsh, Don O Reilly and
Michael O Mahony along with Tommy Roche took part in their
first "Ring of Kerry" and had a very enjoyable day cycling the sce-
nic Kerry roads. Keep the pedals turning as the Kelly Tour is just
around the corner. Club spins Sunday mornings @ 9 am by clock
Perkie Bear has breakfast with children at the Quality Hotel gate. Midweek @ 7.00 pm Tuesday and Thursdays. All NEW-
