Parents should be alert to the fact that while on holiday abroad the
safety standards at beaches and in pools may not necessarily be the
same as in Ireland. Similarly when participating in aquatic activ-
ities, be mindful of your safety and that of children. The simple
rule is: if in doubt - stay out!
The public should take responsibility to avoid becoming a drown-
ing statistic by following some key water safety tips that will help
keep them safe:
SWIMMING

allow children to go immediately to the pool until you have
checked out the safety arrangements. On many occasions there
may not be any lifeguard on duty.
Swim only after digesting food and never after taking alcohol or
immediately after a long journey.
Always swim with others, never alone.
Be particularly careful of young children wandering off.
Constantly supervise children/baby pools that may be next to the
main pool without any barrier between them.
Check for pool depth markings. There may not be any so you
must check the depths yourself if you are a competent swimmer.

YOUTHREACH STUDENTS VISIT
LIMERICK PRISON AS PART OF
THE COPPING ON PROGRAMME
A group of students from the Youthreach Training Centre took part
in the Copping On programme during the past academic year.
Copping On is the National Crime Awareness Initiative, estab-
lished in 1996, developed out of a model of good practice by
Youthreach and the Garda National Juvenile Office. This pro-
gramme arose out of a clearly identified need to respond in a com-
prehensive, holistic way to the issue of offending behaviour
amongst young people. Its focus is the implementation of a nation-
al crime awareness programme with young people at risk, and the
development and support of local multi-agency responses to the
issue of youth offending.
Mike Keating, Declan Mathews and Gordon Nicholson pictured at the Stryker 4- This programme was facilitated by Ms Nicola Lucey of Youghal
mile road race at Carrigtwohill
Youth Project and culminated with a visit to a Prison. This visit
YOUGHAL RUGBY CLUB took place in March when 8 students and 2 staff members traveled
to Limerick Prison. The prison visit proved to be one of the most
GOLF CLASSIC valuable aspects of the programme, as it gave the students first-
hand knowledge of what life is like "inside". As part of the whole
Copping On programme students usually meet with a prisoner
who will speak to them about the realities of prison life. The stu-
dents met with a young male prisoner who spoke very frankly and
honestly with them about his own personal circumstances and why
he had ended up in prison.
On their return to Youthreach the students evaluated the visit and
recorded their findings in the form of a colourful wall hanging on
which each student outlined their feelings on leaving the prison.
This art-work was displayed in the Copping On Spring 2009
Newsletter.

ABOUT US Youghal & District Nursing Home is a new, purpose built residential nursing home. The décor and dining facilities
within the establishment are comparable to a 4* hotel. Within 'Your Hotel' you have the security of knowing that medical and nurs-
ing needs will be effectively addressed by our multidisciplinary team, which includes amongst others, physiotherapists, podiatrist, alter-
native therapist, as well as recreational therapy and pastoral care, thus ensuring that the well being of the whole person, phys-
ically, emotionally and spiritually is catered for.
Established and run by husband and wife team Peter and Angela Connon we aim to offer a personal, hands on approach to creating a
home from home atmosphere for all our residents whatever the duration of their stay.
As you would expect in any nursing home environment 24 hour nursing care is provided, however we pride ourselves in recognising
that residents needs extend beyond nursing care and therefore our ethos is to provide the most comprehensive nursing care in a relaxed
but stimulating home from home environment.
