The Diabetes Fundraising Event will be held on the 26th June
2009 in memory of Frank Smith
Since 1967 the Diabetes Federation of Ireland has been dedicated
to helping people with diabetes. Through its network of support
branches throughout the country, people who have an interest in
diabetes are dedicated to sourcing and sharing information on dia-
betes and related matters.
Diabetes affects people from all walks of life, from the very young
to the very old and is now considered an epidemic by the World
Health Organisation. In Ireland, it is estimated that there are
200,000 people with diabetes with many unaware. The majority of
these people will only be diagnosed through an acute medical
event of the complications of long term untreated hyperglycaemia.
A further 200,000 people have impaired glucose tolerance or "pre-

Michael Sheehan, Mick O’Connor and Tom Fitzgerald if lifestyle changes are not made.
Diabetes Mellitus, or just diabetes as it is more commonly known,
occurs when the sugar (glucose) level in the blood is too high.
This happens when the body is not burning up carbohydrates prop-
erly due to a defect in the pancreas, the gland that produces insulin.
Insulin is the hormone which keeps blood sugar levels within the
normal healthy range. Diabetes may be present either when no
insulin is made or when insulin is made but not working properly.
The Diabetes Federation of Ireland provides a vast range of serv-
ices which include support for children and parents with diabetes
via the Sweetpea Kidz Club, Children and adolescent adventure
activities, Family weekends and parent support groups. Advocacy
and liaison with clinics, services, the HSE and the Department of
Health and Children, National and local diabetes awareness cam-
paigns & Health Promotion initiatives including diabetes screen-

chase. Fine Gael’s Robert Sweetnam and Sinn FØin’s Michelle
Hennessey were neck and neck with a handful of votes separating
them.
By the second count a staggering 114 of Sandra McLellan’s trans-
fers moved the seat a step closer to Cllr. Hennessey and brought
whoops and cheers from her supporters.
Robert Sweetnam now needed an equally effective transfer of the
166 surplus votes from Michael Beecher. However, Barbara
Murray was favourite to take the majority of those, and she did.

12 in all. The 2004 local elections saw 23 hopefuls contest seats in
what was oftentimes a contentious and controversial affair.
Though the 2009 Local Elections were much more understated
and low key, there were a number of significant factors that will
make it memorable for candidates, their families and the voters.
For much of the day the Town Hall resembled a bookies with bod-
ies busily counting, adding subtracting, surmising, predicting,
cheering and sighing. C.R.Y. sat track-side interviewing those who
had just caught their breath having past the winning post. There
was some light humour prior to the first count as the Town Clerk
explained reasons for the relegation of 41 invalid votes. These
included as many as four ticks or Xs being placed in candidates
boxes and some without any mark at all. Heads shook in dismay.
At the first count there is little doubt that Eoin Coyne grabbed the
headlines. Eoin belied his age, storming to third place with 414

Sandra and the Sinn FØin votes transferred well, she said.
Confidence was the buzz word for those re-elected and Cllr.
Beecher echoed the sentiment. I know people have confidence in
me now but there is always room for improvement. I’d like to
thank the people because this is the highest honour. I’m thrilled
and it shows local democracy is strong in Youghal, he said.
The two new Cllrs., Eoin Coyne and Donie Daly had all the enthu-
siasm of fresh blood. Cllr. Coyne was quick to throw off the cate-
gory of ’youth candidate’. My main ambition is to represent all of

Asked how he felt about the campaign he was honest in his assess-

about F anna FÆil at the moment. I feel the work I put in paid off.

Burke welcomed such a fresh impetus to the often mundane, dusty
chamber that seems to grind slowly on the rusted rails of the Irish
political system. It will be different but it’s great to see the
Council injected with new blood and fresh ideas. He stated that
he would continue his work with local heritage. Money is still
coming into heritage despite the current climate and the new her-
itage directional signs will be rolled out to the historic core of the
town shortly. He added that he was ’honoured and privileged’ to
be re-elected. The vote I got was a combination of myself and
Ollie Casey. It was a great pleasure to work with him for fifteen
years. It was a strong alliance and that alliance got me elected.
For F anna FÆil Cllrs., Linehan-Foley and Revins it was a time to
reflect on how the government had left them with pieces to pick
up. Asked how she had avoided becoming a victim to protest vot-
ing against her party she said it would have been ’unfair to hit local
representatives’. The local elections are contested by personali-
ties. I’ve worked hard for five years. I’m thrilled to be back in and
I thank everyone who voted for me. There’s a lot of issues. We
want to get Dunnes back up and running, we want the new library
in the County Council premises that they bought and we will con-
tinue to fight for a marina for Youghal, she said. Former Cllr.,
Ollie Casey was again remembered by Cllr. Linehan-Foley. He
will be missed, he was like a father figure to me and was a great
help to me when my Dad passed away. Meanwhile, Cllr. Revins
revealed that this would be his last term in office. I’ll step down
after this term. I’ll have given twenty years by that time. So what
would he wish to see realised for Youghal when that day comes.
I’d love to see employment come back to Youghal, even a few
small industries and I still would like to see a shopping outlet, he
said. The campaign had been difficult but Sammy had counted on
the goodwill of his personal vote. I canvassed on my own as
Sammy Revins and now I will continue to work as hard as I have
ever done for the town.
Party politics wise the only change to the line up is the new Labour
seat. Fine Gael’s Cllr. Murray is relieved to continue the strong
representation of her party. It’s a relief to be elected. There was
no surprises locally that the seven would make it. She also wel-
comed the new Cllrs. They’ll be a breath of fresh air. The first
term is all about settling in and it’s the biggest learning cure. I now
have five years under my belt and have forged relationships in a
lot of departments. The campaign was hard. Politics is a tough
game and you need all the help you can get.
By 8pm the numbers were added up, the party was over. Those
who celebrated into the night would have had an uneasy sleep. The
work and the often thankless tasks, frustrations and disappoint-
ments start today. The Council staff excelled in the operation of
the count, their tireless efforts greatly appreciated. Town Clerk,
Liam Ryan remained, as ever, coolness personified and his dili-
gence during the counts made the process seamless. His clear and
concise explanations brought both clarity and understanding to the
waiting crowd. Appreciation was shown with a round of applause
as the 2009 election ended.
