Tourism Networking Showcase Set

To Boost Youghal Tourism
The inaugural Youghal Tourism Networking Showcase held in the
Walter Raleigh Hotel on 30th April 2009 is already being hailed as
a major boost to Youghal’s tourism industry.
The business to business event, organised by the tourism division
of the Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group featured
over forty product providers who took part in a structured net-
working session.
Speaking after the event, organiser Aileen Ahern commented:
"The feedback already from attendees has been so positive. There
was such a great buzz about the place. We knew if we brought
people together it could be the start of people really working
together, - developing joint packages, making referrals, all with
the intention of keeping tourists in the area that bit longer, and
spending more money here. This type of approach leads to a win-
win situation all round".
Attendees included representatives from accommodation and
product providers throughout East Cork and West Waterford,
recognising Youghal’s geographic position and natural base for
tourists visiting both regions.
Mayor Oliver Casey officially opened the event commenting that
"Youghal has seen its ups downs, but with Tourism now being our
number one industry here in Youghal, it is only fitting that we do
all we can to nurture it".
Youghal is blessed with stunning natural assets and resources,
among them the Blackwater River - one of the most beautiful
Rivers in Europe, miles of sandy beach, all set in the backdrop of
a medieval town steeped in history and heritage. Last year the
town was literally pipped to the post in the European Destination
of Excellence Awards, and has been designated a Family Friendly
destination for 2009.

Tom & Ann McCarthy Photo Michael Hussey GARDEN
AT BUNSCOIL MHUIRE
A number of years ago Bunscoil acquired a piece of land to the rear
of the school. This area has now been transformed into a School
Garden.
The Parents Association took on this project and fundraised over
the last number of years to fence and prepare the garden.
Fundraisers of various types were undertaken, including "Who
wants to be a Thousandaire".
It has now been fenced, and raised-beds have been put in place.
Each Class has been assigned its own plot. Planting equipment,
bulbs and plants have been made available by the Parents

Aura this summer
Local people thinking about kick-starting a new fitness regime for
the summer and beyond have been presented with the perfect
opportunity, thanks to a generous new membership offer this May
at Aura Youghal Leisure Centre.
Aura has made the gesture to the large numbers of people current-
ly eyeing up treadmills, spin bikes and fitness classes and to incen-
tivise others in the area, who may not have considered making
time for a new exercise routine, to improve their health and to stay
in shape during the hottest months of the year.
"There is always an increase in the number of people attending the
gym and starting new exercise regimes around this time and this
year will be no different. We tend to find that many people decide
to start exercising again at the start of the summer and the reasons
for this vary from person to person," explained Tracy Kennelly,
Operations Manager at Aura Youghal.
Eileen O’Regan, Ann McCarthy, Margaret Walsh and Eileen Donoghue "It may be because they have let things slip over the springtime
with work commitments, or their regular workouts may have start-
ed to take a backseat to their social life. Either way, people natu-
rally want to look their best in the good weather and starting to put
together two, three or even four workouts a week is one of the best
ways to achieve their health and fitness objectives.
"We know from experience that sometimes everyone needs a little
bit of encouragement to start exercising again, rather than just
thinking about it. This is why we have taken the decision to drop
our single annual membership fee by 100 from 499 to 399.
This offer will run for the month of May and is limited to the first
50 applicants," explained Tracy.
"While it is always great to see that people are concerned about
their health and fitness, it is even more important that they main-
tain their exercise routine long after the summer is finished.
"Signing up for an annual membership to Aura will provide even
more motivation to stay in shape, not just for the summer, but all
Bridget Flavin, Margaret Cooley and Ellen Melley year around, while the 100 reduction is especially welcome in the
current economic climate.
"We expect these 50 discounted rates to literally fly out the door,
so we are encouraging all those interested to contact the centre
straightaway and speak to one of our advisors.
"Whether it is trips to the gym, swims in our 25-metre pool, or to
attend one of our many fitness classes, Aura provides something
for everyone, whatever their age of fitness level," added Tracy.
Meanwhile, Aura is currently taking bookings for the next set of
lessons in ’Aura Swim Academy’. The 10-week course is suited to
children of all ages and swimming abilities and will help them to
learn how to swim and improve their swimming skills.
Those interested in applying for Aura Youghal’s annual member-
ship discount, or enrolling their child in ’Aura Swim Academy’,
Eileen Linehan, Dolly Power, Margaret Aherne and Patsy Scott should contact reception on 024-91614.

On Bank Holiday Monday the Munster Senior and Junior

she was unlucky at 2.70 coming close on her 3 attempts. The gold

level and looking dangerous. Points from Bill Cooper and Leigh
Desmond restored the half time deficit and soon Youghal led by 5
and looked home and dry with 10 minutes to go. Mallow seemed
to get a second wind aproaching the final whistle and when a mag-
nificent save by Richie Cunningham wasn’t cleared and Mallow
goaled it was game on again and scores were level at 1-12 to 2-9.
Mallow went a point up almost straight from the restart and looked
all over the winners until Leigh Desmond was fouled and pointed
the resulting free. The assembled crowd expected the final whistle
and were already thinking about the replay when James O’Mahony
caught a great ball in the corner and centred for Desmond who was
fouled and again he pointed the free to give Youghal a hard earned
victory. Mallow had a chance to draw level but the attempt fell
short into the grateful hand of Richie Cunningham and from the
clearence the final whistle blew.
U21 FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP EAST CORK FINAL
YOUGHAL 2-6 V GLANMIRE 2-13
A bridge too far for Youghals young guns as they came up against
a team that had no player under the age of 19 in their side as
opposed to Youghal playing what is in effect a Minor team plus 4
players up to the age. No excuses however as Glanmire were a
class above and dominated in most areas of the field in the open-
ing half but never opened a gap that they could have been com-
fortable with. Youghal were happy enough to go in trailing by just
4 points at the break on a score line of 0-7 to 0-4. Youghals cause
however wasn’t helped when Conor O’Sullivan limped off just
before the break but the incoming Paul Quill did well around the
middle and disrupted a lot of play. Youghal started well in the sec-
ond half and when Stephen Kelly goaled after 5 minutes the scores
were level. We never seemed to drive on from this and were very
weasteful in possesion giving away some vital ball under no real
pressure which knocked the stuffing out of the lads. A very poor
decision by the referee in the Glanmire penalty area saw them
break quickly and goal at the other end. Youghal rallied again and
James O’Mahony pulled it back to 4 points again with a great goal
and shortly after we were unlucky not to have got a penalty with
10 minutes left. Glanmire overpowered Youghal in the last 10
minutes which was no surprise after the huge effort the lads put in

Novice Cup Final Last Thursday, 7th May was competition night Coyne, Breeda Curtin Lady Captain and Eileen Farrell pictured at the presentation
in the alley again. After a schedule of 18 matches to get to the final of Prizes in the Youghal Tiles Tournament at Youghal Golf Club

John C. Murray Memorial Trophy

we were finally ready to have the final of the inaugural Novice Cup.
In the earlier stages we had the Winter Plate Finalists Brendan
Mackey and Michael Pearce knocked out, we had Jody Cooper lose Sponsored by:
out narrowly in the quarter final. We had SiobhÆn Downing upset
many of the men by knocking them out only to lose in the semi Peter, Mary & The Murray Family
final. We also had Michael John Curley exit at semi final stage.
Competing for the final were Barry Goggin and Colin Kennedy.
Both players have a very different style of play. Barry plays a very
fast paced, hard hitting game, whereas Colin likes to play lots of
drop shots and z-balls into the front corners. It was going to be
interesting to see how each would cope. The first game went point
for point most way through as the players settled into their match.
At 9-9 the game could have swung either way. It was Barry that got
the next few points and ended up taking the first on a 15-10 score.
Barry started the second game strong and notched up a couple of
early scores that had Colin playing catch up. It was a lead that
Colin was not making roads into and through strong serving and
second shot combinations Barry took the second and won to take
the honors and win the competition. The club would like to con-
gratulate all 20 players on making the competition very enjoyable. 1st Prize - Ray Shields pictured with the Captain Austin O’Keeffe, Peter Murray -

We would also like to thank the players whom assisted with the ref-
ereeing over the weeks. Finally, we would also like to thank all
those that came up to watch and support their friends on the nights
and contribute to the great atmosphere.
Open Cup No sooner has the Novice Cup finished and we have
kicked off the Open Cup. In this competition we have 21 players
battle out 20 matches to be crowned Open Champion for the next
twelve months. The first round of matches saw Brendan Mackey
beat Kevin Landers on 2-0 scoreline. Next up Jody Cooper ended
Keith Walsh s interest with a 2-0 win also. Last match of the night
had Olan McCarthy book his place in the next round after seeing off
Jason Browne. Next Thursday 14th May we have matches as fol-
lows:14-May-09 7.00pm Barry Goggin vs. Michael John Curley;
8.15pm Brendan Mackey vs. Michael Pearce; 9.00pm Brian
Fitzgerald vs. Killian McCarthy 2nd Prize - Paddy Drummy pictured with the Captain Austin O’Keeffe, Peter
Spring Ladder The Spring Ladder is well underway with players Murray - Sponsor, John Murray - Sponsor & Larry Cunningham President
like Keith Gallogley & Barry Goggin making significant progress
and making their way into the top 10 on the ladder. Wayne
Fitzgerald still holds the number 1 slot, however we will have to
keep our eye on this as he has challenges from Dwaine O Shea and
Andrew Gallogley to be played in the coming week. Michael
Pearce, Liam Joyce, Brian Fitzgerald, Brendan Mackey and Jody
Cooper are all in the top 10 also and are battling it out weekly to
improve/maintain their rankings. There are still about 6 weeks to
be played in the ladder so there is still plenty of time for movement!
Youths Training Training continues on a Saturday between 1.30pm
and 4.30pm. Turnout had been good to date with most of the cur-
rent youths coming up for some well valued coaching. Training is
free and the club will provide all equipment. Parents are welcome
to stay, have a tea/coffee and biscuits and watch from the gallery if Best Gross - Tommy Kennefick pictured with the Captain Austin O’Keeffe, Peter
