Four of the drunk-driving incidents occurred over a two-day,

INTO SAILING WEATHER 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
By Christy Parker
Two young Youghal lads savouring the increased opportunity for
outdoor activities that the fine weather brings are Anthony White
and Adrian Lee. Both are keen boaters and earlier this year became
widely accepted as the two youngest sailors ever to acquire
VHF/DSC (Digital message transmitting) qualification in Ireland.
At 12, they were of the minimum age for inclusion on the course.
Besides having Christian names beginning with the letter 'A', there
is a remarkable similarity in profile between the two friends. Both
are the sons of coastguard service fathers who introduced them to
the sea at a very early age, both are from a family of four with one
older sister and both want to fly helicopters as adults. They are both
also Manchester United fans, though they have a marked reluctance
to settle for second best as befell their team this year!
Anthony is the son of 'Goggy' and Mary White of Sarsfield's
Terrace and brother of Jenna,15. He frequently goes fishing with his
dad on a 19 ft boat part-owned by Tom Power. (Goggy, a lifelong
fisherman, is an Aston Villa supporter in Youghal, so is presumably
unfazed by loneliness at sea).
Anthony harbours hopes of piloting a helicopter with the Royal
Navy when he reaches adulthood. He is therefore delighted that his
newly acquired qualification not only entitles him "to use a radio on
any boat in the world" but also provides a step on the path to his
long-term flying ambitions. He attends Bunscoil Mhuire.
Adrian, a few months older than Anthony is the son of Richard and
Ruth Vance Lee and his older sibling Christina is 14. He also wants
to pilot helicopters in the longer term, although he sees the Irish
Coastguards service as the beneficiaries. He fishes with his dad in
an 18ft craft but also has his own boat and a kayak. He had his first
boat trip while Esther Whyte and Mike Benardino and family Anthony and Johnny now celebrat-

The boys, who
already epitomise cool-headed poise when discussing their achieve-
ments and ambitions, built confidence for the exam by joining the
coastguard crew for a couple of evenings a week for nearly a
month. They then undertook an intensive weekend course amongst
a dozen or so adults under the tutelage of Aqua Trek supremo John
Innes after which a Department of the Marine official set them a
written and oral exam. They found more difficult than anticipated
but sailed through it nonetheless.

God saw the road was long,
The hill was hard to climb,
God is waiting in the silence,
He gently closed your loving eyes,
For a heart that he can fill, And whispered peace be thine,
We shall meet again in a better place,
He must find it cleansed and empty, Where farewell is never spoken,
We shall clasp each other by the hand,
With a spirit calm and still.
And that clasp shall not be broken,
Forever in our hearts and thoughts
You will always be in my heart,

Claycastle Pitch & Putt Club Captain's Prize 2010
memory of the late Barry Kelly R.I.P. (E.S.B. and Ranges). Well done
Harry and to all who helped in the organising of this epic quest.
The Club Matchplay final was played on Thursday last between
Brendan McCaughey and Anthony O’ Loughlin. After an excellent
game Anthonycame out on top to claim the Matchplay for the first
time in 14 years. The presentation was held at ‘Farrells Bar
Summerfield’ who sponsored the competition where a great night was
had by all who attended. Result of fourball kindly sponsored by

performed well recently at the St.Stephens scratch cup. Colin shot 95
(-13) for his 36 holes and won the best 36 prize while Paudie won the
final 18 with a blistering 42 (-12) where a putt for the course record
stayed agonisingly short on the lip of the hole on the 18th green. Gary

Club pictured with Martin Keohane Captain and Phil Mangan Lady Captain the final 18 prize at the Rocklodge scratch cup with a score of 48. Four
Claycastle players represented the club at the Cork Matchplay in
Collins at the weekend. Martin Keohane lost to eventual winner
Thomas Lynch in the first round. Also falling at the first hurdle was
Paudie O’ Sullivan who lost to brother Gary in a hard fought game,
Gary went on to reach the semi final where he lost to the excellent
Thomas Lynch. Anthony O’ Loughlin lost at the quarter final stage to
Ray Murphy. All in all a solid performance by the lads but the wait
goes on for that first illusive ranking event title. All the best to Colin
Sheehan and Paudie O’ Sullivan who take part in the Gents Munster
Matchplay at the Parteen course in Limerick this weekend. Next
weekend sees Anthony O’ Loughlin and Johan Brosnan play in the
Gents National Matchplay. Both players had contrasting fortunes in
the draw where Johan was handed a tough task against Tipperary man
John O’ Meara while Anthony will be expected to overcome the
unranked Anthony Mahoney of the Glenville club in Dublin. An excit-
ing couple of weeks ahead for the club where fingers crossed the first
major championship can be won by one of our players.

Phil Mangan (Lady Captain), Mr. Michael Farrell (sponsor), Anthony O’ Loughlin
(Winner), Joy Bryan (Chairperson) and Martin Keohane (Captain). (P: Thomas Bulman)
Our captain Martin Keohane’s prize was played for over the weekend
of 16th May. The members were out in force to support Martin who
hasgiven years of dedicated service to the club both on and off the
course. Martin plays a crucial roll in the running of the club with a lot
of his work done unassumingly behind the scenes and so it was right
that there were well over 200 cards played over the weekend. The ris-
ing star of Cork pitch and putt Johan Brosnan was the proud winner of
the magnificent prize. Johan recorded a new course record of 45 (-9)
on route to claiming his first major win in the adult ranks. The future
certainly looks bright for the man from the front strand and all the
hours of practice are now paying dividend. Hot on Johan’s tail was
another young gun James Howes, who finished just two strokes back
in second place. James won’t have long to wait for his first major suc-
cess.Results-O/A Nett- Johan Brosnan, O/A Gross- Anthony O’
