Prerequisite EE009

Course 1. To familiarize the student with the analysis and design of feedback amplifiers
Objectives 2. To familiarize the students about oscillators, tuned amplifiers, wave shaping
circuits, and multivibrators.

Course On successful completion of this course the students will be able to


Outcomes 1. Design circuits with transistor basing. (3)
2. Design simple amplifiers circuits (3)
3. Analyze the small signal equivalent circuits of transistor (2)
4. Design and analyze large signal amplifiers. (2,3)
5. Evaluate the operations of various multivibrators.(3,4)

Note: Numbers given in the parenthesis refer to Graduate Attributes required by (NBA).

UNIT I CLIPPERS AND CLAMPERS


Diode clippers, Transistor clippers, clipping at two independent levels, Transfer characteristics of
clippers, Emitter coupled clipper, Regulators using Zener, IC voltage regulators, clamping
operation, clamping circuits using diode with different inputs, Clamping circuit theorem,
practical clamping circuits, effect of diode characteristics on clamping voltage, Transfer
characteristics of clampers.

UNIT II BJT AMPLIFIERS


Biasing of BJT, DC Load line, Operating point, Stability factors, various biasing methods for
BJT–Bias Compensation, Thermal stability.

UNIT III JFET AND MOSFET AMPLIFIERS


Biasing for JFET, Triggering circuit of MOSFET , Small signal analysis of JFET amplifiers,
Small signal analysis of MOSFET and JFET, Common source amplifiers, Voltage swing
limitations, Small Signal analysis of MOSFET and JFET source follower and common gate
amplifiers – BiMOS Cascade amplifier.

UNIT IV FEEDBACK AMPLIFIERS


Block diagram, Loop gain, Gain with feedback, Effects of negative feedback – Sensitivity and
desensitivity of gain, Cut-off frequencies, distortion, noise, input impedance and output
impedance with feedback, Four types of negative feedback connections – voltage series
feedback, voltage shunt feedback, current series feedback and current shunt feedback, Method of
identifying feedback topology and feedback factor, Nyquist criterion for stability of feedback
amplifiers.

UNIT V OSCILLATORS & MULTIVIBRATORS


Classification, Barkhausen Criterion – Mechanism for start of oscillation and stabilization of
amplitude, General form of an Oscillator, Analysis of LC oscillators – Hartley, Colpitts, Clapp,
Franklin, Armstrong, Tuned collector oscillators, RC oscillators – phase shift – Wienbridge –
Twin-T Oscillators, Frequency range of RC and LC Oscillators - Astable multivibrator –
Monostable multivibrator – Bistable multivibrators – Triggering methods for Bistable
multivibrators – Schmitt trigger circuit.
