The evenings Mass was truly a memorable occasion, from the
carefully chosen readings to Most Rev. Bishop Lees sermon in
which he praised the parishioners of Knockanore, Glendine and
Kilwatermoy for their great sense of community. The choir most
certainly added to the overall joyous atmosphere within the
church. The gift bearers, readers, altar boys and girls and each
member of the clergy all contributed to creating a Mass that made
one feel like they belonged and had a strong sense of community.
Our local musicians created a wonderful atmosphere while walk-
ing from the church to the hall. It helped to overcome the cold in
the air and enjoy the procession with a sense of anticipation for
what awaited. As the crowd made their way into the bright, wel-
coming and beautifully laid out hall, the stewards were efficiently
motioning people to seats or standing room with the children being

beginning with Most Rev. William Lee to bless the hall.
Mayor of County Waterford Dr. Tom Higgins was next to speak.
He spoke of the importance of community and the great welcome
people talk about when they visit the towns, villages and commu-
nities of County Waterford.
Brian Crowley M.E.P. was next on the list of speakers. He spoke
freely and openly while quoting poets and yet took time to look up
at the children on the balcony. He urged all adults to do likewise
as he said that we are always looking down on them and it is nice
to look up at them for they are Nthe adults of the future. Again, the
theme of community ranN through his eloquent speech. He then
pulled the red curtain to unveil the plaque and pronounced the hall
officially open.
Fr.Pat Condon then took to the podium and praised the work of

asked the bishop to make sure he could stay.
Next to speak was our own Councilor James Tobin. Again, he
praised the work done by all and was delighted to have helped. He
thanked most sincerely all who played a part in making it possible
and expressed that his next wish for the parish was an all weather
pitch.
When Mary Herlihy introduced the final speaker of the night she
spoke passionately and with great honor called on the Chairman of
KGK Community Hall, Michael O’Neill. There was rapturous
applause and a standing ovation as he took to the podium, for he
was the driving force behind the acorn of an idea which grew to
the great oak that is the KGK Community Hall. He recalled how
the project began and the numerous people involved in making it
a possibility. He was overwhelmed as he spoke of the support from

speech. Both he and his wife Cathy were then presented with a gift
of appreciation for their commitment to the project.
Finally, it was time to enjoy the scrumptious delights that many of
the ladies of the parish had prepared for us. The selection and pres-
entation of food was second to none. Take a bow ladies - a job well
done. Our local musicians once again created a lovely atmosphere
as the crowd mingled, enjoyed the company, admired the hall, new
stage and a slide show of various work stages of the hall. The chil-
dren were treated to goody bags and it must be noted how well the
children behaved on the night. As the crowd slowly dispersed and
the night drew to a close, the dishes were washed, the chairs
stacked and a sense of contentment and relief was felt amongst the
organizers as the evening had fulfilled all expectations.

Feís Chíll Cóírne Youghal Bay Bridge Congress
Kilcorney Feis (Feis Chill C irne) will be holding its 100th Feis
event on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st of May 2009. All events
will be staged in both the local community hall and Primary
school. This happens to be very convenient for both competitors
and organisers as both buildings are side by side. This arrange-
ment has worked extremely well over the past number of years
and the organisers are privileged to have such facilities. This event
is historic being the 100th Feis since it’s foundation. At this stage
I would like to make reference to the history of kilcorney Feis
Kilcorney Feis (Feis Chill C irne) was founded in 1910 by Liam
Buachalla and a large group of willing helpers. It has the proud
distinction of being held every year since, usually on the last
Sunday of May. The Feis in Kilcorney, as in other places, grew as
part of an overall strategy to prevent the Irish language from
becoming extinct. The census of 1891 showed that less than
700,000 Irish speakers remained in the Country at that time. The
Congress President Sally Barry, CBAI President Martin Hayes with the winners of
figures caused an alarming realisation that something had to be
the Congress Teams, Jeannie Fitzgerald and Danny Liddy
done. In 1893 a small group of dedicated patriots got together in
Dublin and formed the Gaelic League. Amongst them was Dr.
Douglas Hyde who was later to become President of Ireland. It’s
aim was to alert people’s awareness to the importance of keeping
the Irish language spoken in Ireland.

This year the Feis will run over two days Saturday 30th and
Sunday 3st of May.
The programme of events this year are as follows.
Saturday 30th of May 2009.
11am. A vitage rally comprised of tractors and cars starting at
Howards Cross and proceeding to the church grounds.
11.30am Millstreet Pipe Band will perform as the vintage rally
approach the church grounds
12noon Official opening of the Feis by Liam O’Buachalla son of
the late Sean.
This will be followed by Singing , recitations and music compe- Winners of Intermediate Teams, Gerry Stack, Ollie Reilly, Sally Barry, Ann O’
titions in the school. Grady, CBAI President Martin Hayes and Ted Long
Sunday 31st May 2009
10am. Dancing Competitions for Figure, Solo and set dances
in the community hall.
Various side shows all day Sunday to include Bouincing Castle,
Face painting, Balloon artists, to name but a few, so overall a great
day’s Family entertainment to be enjoyed.
8pm. A remembrance Mass will be held in St Nicholas Church
Kilcorney for all those involved in the Feis down through the
years, followed by a Ceile dance in the community hall with music
provided by Heart to Heart formely Sheila and Southern Pride,
Refreshments, Barbeque and a full Bar will also be available on
the night.
Hot Food and beverages will be available on both days provided
by Lemon Catering
So Come along and be part of this wonderful historic event.

At the Munster Pole Vault
Championships held in C.I.T Cork on
Sunday the 24th of May, Nikita
Savage became the first Female Pole
Vaulter in Ireland ever to achieve the
European Youth Olympic qualifying
standard of 3.30 metres. Over the last
number of weeks Nikita has competed
around the country in a bid to achieve
the EYOF standard and each time has
moved a step closer to that goal. She
has progressed from her opening com-

on the 4th May and cleared 3.20 metres on the 10th May in the
County Senior Championships. On Sunday morning last in ideal
conditions she realised her goal.
Nikita opened the competition with a first time clearance at 2.80
metres and also cleared 3.00 metres on her first attempt. Nikita
then asked that the bar be raised to the 3.30 mark. Nikita knocked
the bar on her first attempt and again on her second attempt.
Taking a few minutes to compose herself and on her final attempt
Nikita cleared the 3.30 metres to great applause from the watch-
ing crowd and athletes.
The height had to be verified by the field referee and following the

The bar was raised to 3.40 metres and Nikita knocked it on her
first two attempts but came so close on her 3rd attempt to clearing
it when she was over it she barely glanced it off with the hand.
Nikita’s clearance of 3.30 metres today set a new Munster U18
record raising it from the old standard of 2.60. It is also a New
Munster Junior U20 record and it is the third time this year she has
broken the Munster Junior U20 record.
Having achieved the EYOF standard Nikita now must wait to see
if she will be selected on the Irish team to compete in the EYOF
championships in Tampere in Finland. Regardless of selection on
the Irish team, Nikita’s achievement of being the first Irish Female

Nikita has done what the selection criteria required by jumping the

for the Irish team so she can compete against the best in Europe in
her age group.

whose 2nd Anniversary occurs on the 7th June whose anniversary occured on 18th May

Out of our lives, In silence of a May morning, you heard a gentle call,
You took the hand of Jesus, and quietly left us all.
You may have gone.
You suffered much in silence, but your spirit did not bend,
But in our hearts, You faced each day with courage, and smiled right to the end.
You still live on We recall to mind the way you spoke, and all the things you said,
Your strength, your stance, the way you sang, remember those instead.
The happy smile you always had, and eyes that shone with laughter,
Always remembered by your sisters Betty, Bernie, Pearl So much of you will never die, but will live with us forever.

This was held in Woodenbridge on 17th April. Edel and Julie did

Minister for Education and Science, Batt O'Keeffe TD
opens extension in Clonpriest NS Youghal
The extension to Clonpriest National School in Youghal adds a
modern new dimension to a school that’s over 100 years old,
according to the Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe
TD. Speaking at the official opening of the extension, Minister
O’Keeffe said: ’I’m delighted to open the new extension comprising
two classrooms, administration office, principal’s office, staff room
and link corridor. ’The old school has also been revamped to the
highest health and safety standards. ’My Department awarded the
school over 940,000 in two grants to cover the cost of the whole
project which was completed last September. ’I want to pay tribute
to everyone involved in the project which adds a modern dimen-
sion to a school that dates since 1902. ’I’ve no doubt that future gen-
erations of teachers and students will benefit from today’s invest-
ment which demonstrates the Government’s commitment to the
built environment in schools.’The Government is prioritising the Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD with Clonpriest NS teachers
schools capital programme. This year, it amounts to 610 million -
a record spend in any one year.
The target for this year for both primary and post-primary schools
is 9,475 permanent places in new schools, 3,900 permanent school
places in existing schools and refurbishments to benefit over 2,400
pupils. The announcements by Minister O’Keeffe so far in respect
of large-scale projects moving to tender and construction will cre-
ate over 30,000 school places. Principal Anne O’Neill and Caroline Archbishop Dermot Clifford pre-
