YOUGHAL CREDIT UNION DECENTRALISATION

LAUNCH "KEEP THE WOLVES

DELAY
By Christy Parker
The welcome mat for Youghal’s decentralisation quota can remain
unfurled for a while longer as news emerges that the relocating
workforce won’t now arrive until late 2009 at least. That’s two
years later than first anticipated following then Finance Minister
McCreevy’s controversial decentralisation proposal in December
2003.
The latest date was supplied by current Finance Minister Brian
Cowen, following a Dail question tabled by east Cork FG TD
David Stanton.
Furthermore, the original redeployment figure of 200 pubic ser-

the launch. Deputy Stanton believed slow progress in securing new office
space was the reason so many workers had still not signed up for
Youghal’s scenic and social splendour.
He said he had been "informed that in August 2006 the Office of
Public Works (OPW) had agreed terms to acquire a three-acre site
from Cork Co. Council. The OPW is still awaiting the contract for
the sale of the site, which is delaying the start of construction’", he
complained.

St. Ita’s Church Centenary

The community of Gortroe celebrated the centenary of the found-
ing of St. Ita’s church on October 18th last with a special mass
Michael Murphy, Cahir and Hugh Keane concelebrated by the Bishop of Cloyne, very Rev John Magee,
Canon Browne, PP of Youghal and a number of other Youghal and
visiting priests. In his homily the Bishop used the analogy that St.
Ita’s was built from bricks and stone, but that the mortar which has
kept it together over the past 100 years has been the love within
the community who worship there.
The event was coordinated by Gortroe Hall Committee and the
committee would like to thank all those who added to the success
of the evening. Special thanks are offered to the clergy, mass
servers, the choir and the readers of the liturgy. A large number of
people helped in advance in cleaning and preparing the church and
village and arranging flowers. Their assistance was greatly appre-
ciated. Thanks also to all those stewards who assisted with

booklet are also acknowledged.
After the mass refreshments were available in the Quality Hotel,

slideshow of significant events in the Gortroe Community through
the years organised by Mossie Lynch. The committee would like
to thank Mossie and the hotel staff for their contribution to the
evening. Finally gratitude is expressed to all those who attended
the event and helped to make it such a success.

Youghal a deserved share of the spoils.
Youghal’s second game was at home to Bandon last Friday night and
turned out to be the talking point of the season so far, but not for all
the right reasons. It was one of those games that be honest, the
Youghal team and management would have expected to win. But the
way this game went they had to settle for the 1-1 draw. Youghal’s
scorer on the night was Paul Hennessey with Richie Holland scoring
for Bandon. The disappointing aspect of the game was that there was
three players sent off, two from Youghal and one from Bandon.

Gortroe 45 Results
Declan Foley has volunteered to help us out at the Gortroe 45
drive and is proving to be a great asset. This is the time of
bewitching and magic which brings to mind that famous appren-
tice the sorcerer’s apprentice, who when asked to fetch water from
the well he used the limited magic he knew to make the broom-
stick go to the well to fetch the water but was unable to stop the
broomstick bringing in water and flooding the house. The appren-
tice got an axe and split the broomstick in two hoping to stop it
dead in its tracks, but it did not work as the two pieces continued
to bring in the water only twice as fast.
Fortunately the wizard returned in time to remove the spell and
save the house from flooding. Now we do not expect such das-
tardly results if Declan is asked to put water in the kettle for the
post cards refreshments. Recent winners at the Gortroe 45 are as

Raicevic and Youghal Rugby Club’s Mick Healey. Training will
occur outside of school hours at Youghal rugby club, convenient-
ly adjacent to the school.
Significantly, ten primary schools in east Cork and practically
every secondary school in Munster have a rugby team, following
accentuation of the governing body’s youth development policy in
recent years. Now as schools rugby arrives in Eddie O’Sullivan’s
home territory, its significance in a town where GAA games tradi-
tionally predominated school sport is immense.
With the amalgamation of its three post-primary establishments
into Pobalscoil na Trionoide last year, other sports have been writ-
ing their names on the board and rugby now joins a school repre-
sentation list that, as well as male and female GAA codes, includes
athletics, golf, pitch and putt, basketball and orienteering. "It can-
not but benefit the students to have a wide range of extra-curricu-
lum activities," said school principal Seamus O’ Ceallachain. Carmel Daly, sponsor, presents the team jersey to captain Anthony Mason with
Prior to departing for Ballincollig, the 25-man squad and officials Principal of Pobalscoil Na Trionoide Seamus O’Ceallachain; Sean O’Neill,Coach;
were presented with their new red and blue strip by Carmel Daly Charlie O’Neill Vice President Youghal Rugby Club and team players
of team sponsors Daly Travel. The colours reflect the east
Waterford/east Cork student divide. Principal Seamus
O’Ceallachain then hailed "a very historic occasion" and thanked
Youghal Rugby club and Daly sponsors "for their support towards
the school over the past year."
Youghal Rugby Club Vice-President Charlie O’Neill was equally
conscious of the day’s historic significance both for his club and
"for the general community." As an early consequence, new play-
ers had joined the club through the school, alongside those already
affiliated, he said.
Fourth year student Anthony Mason has been playing rugby for
seven years. With the side chosen from transition to 6th year, he
was "a bit surprised" to receive the honour of being Youghal’s first
school rugby captain. The right side flanker cites Ireland’s Paul
