I. Concept Notes

Review of Related Literature

A review of related literature or literature review is a written summary of published research studies
and relevant works about a particular subject matter that is related to the researcher’s main topic.
 Why is it important to conduct a review of related literature? Neuman (2009, pp. 69-70) gives a
number of reasons that explain the relevance of a literature review:
1. A literature review helps the researcher to understand the different studies done on his or her chosen
topic.
2. A literature review delimits the researcher’s topic.
3. A literature review provides the researcher with sources of information that he or she can use to learn
more about his or her chosen topic.
4. A literature review can stimulate the creativity and curiosity of the researcher because it can provide
new insights and ideas about his or her chosen topic.
5. A researcher can learn about the writing skills of other researchers through a literature review.
Characteristics of a Good Literature Review
1. A literature review must explain the body of knowledge in area including the major issues about the
topic.
2. A good literature review can increase the reader’s confidence with regards to the competence of,
ability, and academic preparation of the researcher.
3. A good literature review must be able to sketch the direction of the research.
4. A good literature must be able to produce a good integration and synthesis of the different research
findings.
5. A good literature review identifies unstudied areas and proposes hypotheses that other researchers can
study as well.

II. Exercise: Making a Note Card for a Literature Review

Directions: Write a note card to record relevant information from a source. (Please refer to your
