Before we proceed to our lesson, let’s conduct a short review regarding to the prerequisite subject, or your subject last

We have learned about the various dimensions of Philippine literary history from precolonial to contemporary. And

Yes! That’s right. Very well said. Last semester the subject was all about the 21 st Century Literature from the

Language
The Language of Creative Writing
Imagery- the use of figurative language in such a way that it appeals to the readers’ physical senses.
Figures of Speech
The following are the most commonly used figures of speech which aid writers in developing mental
images.
1. Simile – is used for the comparison of two essentially unlike things, often in a phrase.
2. Metaphor – is the use of a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing as that of another,
thus making an implicit and direct comparison.
3. Personification – endows human qualities to inanimate objects or abstract ideas.
4. Hyperbole – is more commonly known as extreme exaggeration.
5. Onomatopoeia – also known as the sound word.
6. Apostrophe – is directly addressing an absent/ imaginary person or a personified abstraction, as
a living entity.
7. Metonymy – replaces one word or phrase for another, usually as a symbol with which it is
closely associated.
8. Oxymoron – uses contradictory terms which are combined to make meaning.
9. Irony – is an expression which is the opposite of what is meant.
10. Paradox – is a figure of speech which contradicts itself in the same sentence.
Diction – the selection of the most appropriate word you can use for your written work.
A good use of diction is said to be achieved when the following conditions are met by the author or
writer:
by Lewis Carroll
by Robert Frost
o The Eagle
by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
