Nasi Ulam Cikgu was founded by the late Haji Abdul Hamid bin Idris. Prior to entering the business
field, he was an economics teacher at Adabi school and his wife was Hajah Siti Razam binti Awang.
When he started this Nasi Ulam Cikgu, he was 45 years old. The late Haji Abdul Hamid and his wife are
from Kelantan. To put it in perspective, there are two branches Nasi Ulam Cikgu in Kelantan which is in
Kota Bharu and at Taman Orkid, Pengkalan Chepa. He opened a new branch in Kota Bharu and was
later handed over to his son, Mr Razihan, who is the only child of the couple.

Initially, the founder of this Nasi Ulam Cikgu was the deceased Haji Abdul Hamid bin Idris, father of Mr.
Razihan who is the owner of the Nasi Ulam Cikgu which has now opened its first branch in Kota Bharu.
How did he or she start the business ?

His business started by selling freshwater fish at the “Pasar Borong Wakaf Che Yeh”, Kota Bharu
Market and supplying fish to Kuala Lumpur and later in 1997 he started a small restaurant in Kubang
Kerian. He opened the Nasi Ulam restaurant in Kg Kraftangan in 2003 before opening another branch
in 2005 at the Taman Orkid and subsequently opened a new branch in Kg Kraftangan. Due to the lack
of compatibility and constant conflict between the spouses, the couple plans to open their own branch
and handle it separately. Because of this, there are two branches of Nasi Ulam Cikgu. However,
thankfully both were well received and welcomed and became a community name by the name of Nasi
Ulam Cikgu Restaurant. This name is not only known in Kelantan, but also throughout Malaysia and
neighboring countries. According to the founder of this Nasi Ulam Cikgu Restaurant, with the existence
of this restaurant, their living conditions have changed which can provide a bit of luxury to his family. He
said that what had to be done had to be continued and furthered by future generations. He hoped that
the restaurant he built would not be buried someday when he was gone.

With a capital of RM 20 000 at the start, the Nasi Ulam Cikgu restaurant was set up. In addition, the
owner of this Nasi Ulam spent RM 10 000 for the kitchen renovation without asking for any help or debt
to either party. He devotes one hundred percent of his own capital to the development of this Nasi
Ulam. In addition, he does not want to be in debt and he insists that the restaurant be constantly
updated according to its current budget without spending too much capital.

Prior to starting a business, there are several steps or strategies he has taken to develop and grow this
Nasi Ulam Cikgu business which include:

First

Complete knowledge. According to him, in order to manage a business, we must have complete
knowledge of the type of business we do and the things that are relevant to it. The knowledge involved
includes product types, types of raw materials, processing methods, how to obtain raw materials and
how to do business. The required knowledge should also be about market prices, competition, cost
changes and changing customer tastes and ways of dealing with them.

Second

Improve existing company management. We must always be on the lookout for better and efficient
business management including in terms of administrative layout and the effectiveness of its
implementation, monitoring of business travel according to their respective tasks.
In improving management it also includes efficiency in terms of employee supervision, monitoring of
store items, tools used and their effectiveness.

i. Lost or stolen equipment may occur to him often because of his inability to supervise it, except
by relying on a particular employee who has been asked to monitor on his behalf. However, he
did not trust his employees too much but because he had to, he had to ask for their help.

ii. The safety of raw materials may not be properly monitored. For example fish, chicken, sugar,
milk and so on are often lost. This should be taken seriously as many employees are struggling
to keep track of it.

Third

Improve the financial management of the company. Good, accurate and orderly financial management
will give you a true picture of business profits. Through it, we can identify real percentages of profits,
identify weaknesses in financial management and take action.

According to him, while he did not provide a good financial management system, there were many
weaknesses and failures in financial matters. This includes records of expenses and actual income
(profit and loss). He said his target was to earn RM 100,000.00 a year as a net profit and that was
sufficient. Indeed, this is not good financial management.

Fourth

Improve output. Products (menus) need to be added and updated in order to always satisfy customer's
taste. This can be done by providing additional menus and providing a wide variety of options to the
customers. It will be an attraction and may face other competitors who have the same menu or are
more attractive than us.

Fifth

Maintain and add customers. This is an important factor and must always strive to retain customers in
any way. According to him, use whatever event is best while still keeping the heart of the customer. He
emphasized the use of polite language, always humble, respectful and always pleased customers in
any situation.
Sixth

Company expansion and the establishment of new branches. Business expansion either expanding the
space in the same place or establishing a new branch. This project needs to be carefully planned and
implemented as it involves huge costs, more responsibilities, more challenging management and so on.
Therefore, it has to be planned to reach an empire of Nasi Ulam Cikgu restaurants that will provide
luxury to the future.

Seventh

Beginning with Bismillah and ending with Aamiin. All sustenance, ability, success and prosperity are
from God. Then we as His servants should always begin the work by reciting Bismillahhirahmanirrahim
and ending the work with Aamiin ya rabbala'lamin. Therefore, we should always be grateful for what we
have. We must always remember Him by obeying His commands and leaving His ban. Pray and ask for
His forgiveness and sustenance, In our God we will always be blessed.
What are factors which lead to the creation of business ?

The desire to open this business was based on several events that had been his idol and dream. He
said he had seen some business enterprises that were once prosperous and family affluent, eventually
bankrupt and buried under the control of his heirs. For example, Husin Musa Sawmil in Kg Kota, Taman
Orkid Restaurant (before Nasi Ulam Cikgu), Petronas Gate Gang and several businesses by former YB
Cikgu Wan Ibrahim's son.

The first event began with a former YB, YB Cikgu Wan Ibrahim, who once advised her that, “while
working with mom and dad seems to be keeping a tree in the middle of the yard. Take only cooked fruit
at the proper rate, and do not waste it on excess. Take it well, do not cut or cut off the tree just to take
the fruit. The tree must be cared for and nourished together so that it will bear more fruit in the future.
Everyone will be able to enjoy more and if not, the tree will die and it will all be at a loss. As well as the
trusted store, all the beneficiaries will have to take care of it and grow the business. ”This is because,
this story came to YB Cikgu Wan Ibrahim himself where all his projects and endeavors entrusted to his
children have been unsuccessful and buried during his lifetime. He is very disappointed that everything
he has done has gone wrong, such as the lumber business to import furniture, the mini-market
business and the making of homestay services. In the end he died with all his unsuccessful efforts.

The second event started with Station Petronas Pintu Geng. The story begins with the father of Station
Petronas Pintu Geng owner Hj Mat giving a Petronas Station to his son Hj Wahab. He considers this a
provision that may not be accepted by others. Hj Wahab originally worked as a JKR clerk, and later
inherited his father's business and began to change his life as a restaurant owner. At that time he had
several Mercedes cars. In addition, he had a hobby of raising birds and at the same time buying
expensive birds. As a result, eventually, the Petronas Station he was working on at the time was
damaged. Not only that, his home was also mortgaged, all the luxury he owned was gone. As a result,
Hj Wahab now has to work at a car wash at another petrol station. He said he did not despise the work
done by Hj Wahab today, but this was a terrible reflection that he hoped would not happen to his
descendants.

The third event was related to Husin Musa Sawmil, Kg Surau Kota. While his father was in business,
Sawmil's business was a luxury to his family. All of his children work as clerks in his office. Daughter-in-
law and several grandchildren also work with him.
After Mr. Husin's business owner passed away, the business was continued by his son, daughter-in-law
and grandson. Everyone has their own job as clerk and financial officer working in the office. They work
without discipline and are free to go in and out of office without working hours. As a result of their
attitude, the company eventually went bankrupt. However, they are fortunate that their father's legacy is
immense. In her view, her grandchildren are all selfish when they want to work in the office and hold
high and unqualified positions while working.
