DIARY OF A TRANSITION YEAR STUDENT
AT POBALSCOIL NA TRÍONÓIDE
First Day Back At School
Day one and those teachers are already trying to "motivate" us,
Canice Kennedy, a sports psychologist, came to meet with us and
he gave us an amazing presentation. We really enjoyed it, as we
never had a motivational speaker before. He explained to us that
we can all have dreams, no matter how different they are from our
friends. He tried to motivate us to achieve them, by telling us to
write them on paper, and to take small steps, but everyday take a
step. We all felt that we can achieve, and surpass other people's
expectations of us.
Talk with Aisling Judge
Aisling Judge also came to meet with us on day one, Aisling has
Group of Transition Year students being instructed by local Foróige worker Nicola won the Young Scientist Competition in 2006. She explained how
Lucey at the recent No Frontiers Filming Day
to entered the competition and gave us a great insight into how
interesting science really can be. She told us, how to prepare a
detailed description of our project and most importantly the tips for
impressing the judges… The speech she gave us was so natural and
it did inspire some of our friends to take part in the competition.
School Mass: On Thursday 17th September we all brought our-
selves, our chairs and our friends and joined Fr. Relihan to cele-
brate beginning of the school year. Canon Browne came to our
school and joined Fr. Relihan in celebrating Mass. For me it is the
real beginning of the school year. For the last few days before
Mass, myself and my friends could here the songs begin sung and
the music being played. The atmosphere was being set. Everybody
came together to arrange and decorate the hall Fr. Relihan created
a beautiful and holy atmosphere and some how made the Mass spe-
cial to the full congregation, which was nearly 950 people.
Frances O'Connor and Shelaine Long Christine Cusack and Laura Hennessy
Youghal Radio: Watch out Gerry Ryan! the DJs of the future are
here. Declan Gibbons of Community Radio Youghal came to visit
PRESENTATION FROM APRIL CURTIN the Transition Year classes. Declan went on to explain what the
idea of Youghal radio is, and how we can get involved. We shared
some of our "expert" ideas on how he could improve this service
and he listened and took them on board.
Hope Foundation: The HOPE Foundation meets with all
Transition Year students. HOPE Foundation is an organisation that
fundraises and travels to help the homeless in Calcutta. Ann and
Heidi came to speak to us. Their speech opened our eyes and made
us realise the poverty of the children in the city of Calcutta. They
showed us a very moving video which contained the horror of peo-
ple's lives that live in such extreme poverty in Calcutta. They are
organising a trip out to Calcutta in March and have invited some of
us to join them on the trip, but in order for us to do so we must raise
Euro 3,700 per person. We might need your help!
Subject Profile - Horticulture: Horticulture is the study of soil
and the living organisms that inhabit it. The subject also will
involve the study of the best methods of cultivating the ground.
You learn about soil profiles and the percentages of different mate-
rials contained in the soil. The subject is enjoyable because we get
do dig and do lots of experiments outdoors. Time away from the

Ballymacoda Hunt Fun Ride

Ballymacoda Hunt held their first fun ride on Sunday 4th Oct in
aid of Kilcredan national school. There was a large turnout of hors-
es and pony’s from local clubs and as far away as West Cork,
Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford. It was a beautiful day with
glorious sunshine and fantastic underfoot conditions. A large
crowd from toddlers to pensioners followed the ride from

looking out to Ballycotton Bay. They took to the road onto
Ballymakeigh and Mountcotton for some more banks and double
ditches. The pace slowed down at this stage to let horses catch
their breath and the riders to view the breathtaking cliff top views
of Ballycotton Bay. At this point the followers scrambled for a
good vantage point at the last jump before the half time break for
refreshments. Large spread of drinks and crisps were quickly
devoured by the hungry mob of riders, followers and stewards. At
this point some had enough and were going home others were tak-
ing the short route to the beach and the majority went on to face a
large variety of cross country fences in Glenawilling and

again. By this time a large crowd had gathered in Ring to see the
riders come onto the beach, there was a buzz in the air as people
watched with anticipation to see where and when the horses would
come into view, you could hear people asking the stewards where

Our Usual monthly meeting took place last Wednesday in the Holy
family church hall. Numerous items of cycling matters were dis-
cussed but in particular it was stressed that anyone participating
with the club on the Sunday morning spins must ware a helmet. A
new club kit for next season was also discussed along with the Tel: 20729
renewal of everyone's Cycling License. In addition, all members
along with anyone else participating on cycling spins with the club,
are asked to attend the next monthly meeting on the 4th of
November at 8.00pm in the Holy Family Church Hall in Youghal
where we will have our AGM.
Majorca 2009 Reunion.
Best wishes from all at the club to our Tandem pair of John Tracey
& Seamus Kelly who will be participating in the NCBI'S cycling

Weekend Spins.
As you are all well aware by now, there is a weekly spin every
Sunday morning at 9.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by
the Clock Gate. This spin which runs on various routes every week
usually takes between 2 to 3 hours and covers on average between
50 & 70km ( 35 & 50 miles ). The pace is comfortable and we usu-
ally stop half way around for a coffee or tea.
A second group also goes on a weekly spin every Sunday morning
at 10.00am sharp leaving from Moby Dicks Pub by the Clock Gate.
This spin which runs on various routes every week usually takes
around 2 hours to complete and covers on average between 30 &
40km ( 20 & 25 miles ). The pace is again very comfortable.
This is the perfect time for someone new to start with the group.
With a steady pace and friendly people you are assured of an enjoy-
able spin. New members or visitors to the area are always wel-
come. If you have any questions about the club or attending one of
our weekend spins, please contact our Club Secretary Jonathan at
086-8563292 for details. See you all Sunday Morning !!.
Until next week, safe cycling !!.

Fearghal Curtin and Jennifer Hennessy win U/12 County titles
Club win 33 medals including 6 team prizes
Youghal AC had 40 athletes competing on the first day of the
counties in Carraig na bhFear on Sunday 4th October. An excel-
lent course was set up by the host club Carraig na bhFear; ground
conditions were hard due to dry weather conditions which led to
some fast racing on the day. The weather was glorious with abun-
dance of sunshine. The club had many new athletes competing and
all excelled on their first day out. The club had seven teams
entered and all displayed tremendous team work which was con-
veyed in the results. Boys U/10 County Team Champions
The Girls U/10 team had a big field of 9 athletes in action. The
team was led home by Karynn Collins in 14th place, Litisha
Moriarty 16th, Aine O' Regan 17th, Ciara Leahy 34th, Niamh
Buckley 44th, Caoimhe Barry 41st, Alannah Budds 48th, Chloe
Walsh 49th and Tirna Cahill 56th.
The Boys U/10 team had 6 athletes in action. The team was led
home by Killian Nilan in 9th position, Jake O' Brien 10th,
Matthew Cody 11th, Ben Donovan 21st, Colm Breslin 30th and
Jake McCarthy 34th. The boys won the County team champi-
onship winning themselves Gold team medals. This was a fantas-

tic result as this was their first Cross Country race.
The Girls U/12 team included Jennifer Hennessy who had an out-
standing race to win the County title in a convincing fashion. She
was followed home by Rachel Dunne in 7th place just outside the
individual medals, Emily O' Keefe in 9th place, Chloe O' Keefe
24thh and Fidelma Flavin in 32nd place. Both Chloe and Fidelma
did very well running up an age. The girls won second team proze
thus securing silver medals for themselves. Well done!
The Boys U/12 team was led home by Fearghal Curtin who won
the race in a convincing fashion. He was followed by team mates,
Sean Walsh 15th who was running up an age and very new to the
club, Conor Forde running well in 21st place and Padraig Boys U/14 Silver Team medalists
McCarthy also putting in a good performance to finish in 31st
place in a big field. The boys won third team prize which was an
excellent result.
The club had two girls in the G/14 race, Rebecca Walsh and Katie
Nolan who are also very new to the club. Both girls put in very
solid performances and are improving by the week. They finished
in the top twelve which is a very good result or their first race.
The Boys U/14 team participated in a very competitive field dom-
inated by Togher AC athletes. However two of our athletes Jennifer Hennessy winning Girls U/12
Boys U/16 Bronze Team medalists race
secured themselves bronze individual medals; Billy Dunne run-
ning up an age ran a superb race to finish in 5th place and was fol-
lowed by Padraig Walsh also giving a superb display in 6th place
and also winning a bronze individual medal. Ross Donovan also
had a strong finish in 9th place and Adam Malone making a good
comeback in 20th place. The lads were thrilled to win the second
team prize just 7 points behind Togher A. This result is very
encouraging!
The Girls U/16 team included Emma Flavin who had a superb race
storming in the finish in 4th place very close to Helena Noonan of
Gr Fermoy. She was followed nby Ciara Broderick-Farrell in 7th
who was very unlucky not to be in a medal position. Patricia Girls U/10
Curtin ran well to finish in 12 th place and Lauren McCarthy run-

competitive field. The girls did reall well to win the Club
Championship all winning Gold team medals. Well done girls!

Ahearne 13th, Kieran Walsh 15th and Sean Hennessy 21st. All of
these lads have only commenced training with the club and all are
showing improvement. Both Sean and Kieran were running up
an age and did very well in a competitive field again dominated by
the Togher lads. The lads won the third team prize all winning
bronze team medals.

CHRISTMAS PARTY TIME
If the budget comes out to be way over what you expected to spend,
SO YOU WANNA THROW critically revise your list. (Do you really need to personalize each
guest's paper cup?)
A CHRISTMAS PARTY? Expect to spend about €100 on food and drink alone-more if you're
entertaining more than ten people, and a lot more if you're planning to
In the past, you've gone to Christmas parties only to sing off-key have a party where people might get, shall we say, "sloshed" on the
Christmas carols and get drunk. But this year, instead of doing these eggnog.
things in a corner by yourself, why not get some friends and family Once you're at the supermarket, don't buy anything that's not on the
together and host the event? That way, you can subtly point out to all list, unless it's something important that you forgot. Impulse buys are
of your guests the many items that you need in your house that would the bane of a good budget. Have fun!
coincidentally make great Christmas gifts. So whether you want to
host an elaborate gala or a last-minute fiesta, this is the guide for you.
1. START PLANNING IN EARLY DECEMBER
If possible, you should start planning your party early; this is because
- as we're sure you've noticed - the month of December gets crazier
and crazier as the days go by. So it's a good idea to take care of all the
big things first (date, location, menu) and not worry about all the tiny
details until a couple of days before the big soiree.
Here are some things you should get done within the first two weeks
of December:
Make a guest list, Send out invitations
Plan a menu, Set a budget for food and decorations
Make a guest list
Invite only the number of people that you can handle. Remember that
because of all the present shopping you'll be doing this month, you'll
probably be on the verge of bankruptcy, so don't throw a shindig for
50 people if you can only afford to feed ten. Also take into account the
size of your place and the fact that some of your guests will probably
bring a friend or two without asking you. Finally, if you have to keep
your guest list short, then cut out your work friends - you'll probably
have a separate holiday party with them at the office/garage/zoo any-
way.
Send out invitations
Once you've settled on who you're going to invite, it's time to invite
them. Start inviting people as soon as possible because your guests
will probably be busy with their own holiday chores and will need a
lot of notice. Here are some rules on proper party-inviting so that you
don't commit some egregious faux pas you didn't even know existed:
Do all your inviting at once so that nobody feels like he/she was invit-
ed as an afterthought or a replacement for another guest who couldn't
make it. Either send out written invitations on the same day or just
pick up the phone (the method that we prefer). If all your guests are
technologically inclined (read: computer dorks), send out e-mail invi-
tations through sendomatic.com or evite.com. (But call anyone who
doesn't respond within a week, just in case).
Invite everybody yourself (as opposed to asking someone to pass the
message along to others) so that everyone at the party feels comfort-
able showing up.
If it's OK for your guests to bring dates or kids, indicate it on the invi-
tations; otherwise ask your guests to alert you in advance about any-
body they're bringing. In either case, you should ask your guest to
RSVP with an exact number of tag-alongs. It's not unreasonable for
you to know how many people to expect and prepare for.
Give clues so that people will know how to dress and what to expect
on the menu. Words like "causal" will indicate that jeans are OK,
while words like "fancy-shmancy" will create a different set of expec-
tations.
Set the date of your party on any Thursday night, Friday night,
Saturday, or Sunday before Christmas or on Christmas Eve. Most peo-
ple spend time with their families on Christmas Day, and after the
25th, everyone will be concentrating on New Year's, so don't plan on
throwing your party then.
Set a budget for food and decorations
Figure out exactly much you need before heading to the store - this
way you won't come away with 20 bags of miniature marshmallows
and a battery-operated belly-dancing Santa. Here's the way to do it:
Write down everything you definitely want to have and estimate a rea-
sonable cost next to it. Include everything from chip dip to poinset-
tias.
Always overprice when in doubt. If you think hot chocolate mix costs
between €2.00 to €3.00 a box, mark it down as €3.00. This way, you
won't be caught without enough money at the supermarket.
After you've made up your list, total the cost of all your items, and add
another 10% to the price. Don't forget the paper napkins, plasticware,
and extra toilet paper.

CHRISTMAS PARTY
19th Green It’s that time of year again and the office party is looming. But
how do you make sure that one night letting loose with your work
colleagues doesn’t mean disaster on the career front in 2009?

CHRISTMAS PARTY TIME
Know the format – some Christmas parties are also the time to
mark key achievements in the year and you might even find there
are speeches made and presentations given. Make sure that you are
aware of this before the party so that if you are one of the people
to be honoured, you have a brief thank you speech ready but
remember to keep it brief as your colleagues will want to get back
to partying.
Watch the clock – remember to make sure that you know the time
the party will be starting, and while it is fashionable to be late at
events and no one wants to be propping up the bar for hours on end
before anyone turns up, you certainly don’t want to arrive when
desert is being served. And as for the right time to leave the gig,
be careful not to get the reputation of Cinderella and be one of the
first to leave the party, but equally make sure that you don’t get the
reputation for being the last one standing at the bar at the end of
the night – unless of course you are paying the bill.
Take it easy on the alcohol – yes the company may be footing the
bill, but the office Christmas party is not the time to build a repu-
tation for being able to drink everyone under the table. Enjoy
yourself but be sure that you can remember what you did the next
day. And don’t forget to organise a cab share – you definitely do
not want to risk loosing your driving licence through drinking and
driving.
Show thanks – at the end of the evening, do make sure you take
the time to seek out the people who organised the Christmas party.
They no doubt had to organise the event alongside a busy work
agenda and were probably nervous that everything would be
alright on the night. They will certainly appreciate the fact that the
party goers take the time to say thank you for all their hard work.
Follow these tips to navigate yourself through the season of good
cheer and you will be sure not to blot the copybook for your career
success in 2009.
