Questions:
1. In King Phillip’s war, the bloodiest war in American History, the colonists won; Philip
was killed, and the Native Americans were wiped out. In the First Tidewater War was a
war between Virginia settlers and Virginia Native Americans and caused the Virginia
massacre
2. He was a diplomat that the U.S. government sent to Mexico to obtain peace with them.
Trist proved himself by negotiating a peace deal with Mexico gave the U.S. land in Texas
to the Rio Grande border and west through California, in return the U.S. paid the
Mexican government.
3. A common tactic was to find a Native American settlement and destroy it. This robbed
the Native Americans of supplies for future attacks on colonists.
4. The Battle of Trenton was important to the colonial cause since it was the first time
Washington had defeated a real army without suffering great losses. This victory gave
soldiers an increase in moral which caused new enlistments and many current soldiers to
reenlist.
5. During the Revolutionary War, the battle at Fort Ticonderoga provided the Continental
Army with artillery and boosted the moral of the soldiers. During the War of 1812, the
fort was used by the Americans to defend New York from a British attack.
6. Interior lines of communication are logistical routes within one’s territory that allow for
easy movement of men and supplies. It does not usually hurt to have interior lines of
communication on the battlefield; however, the force with shortest interior ILOC usually
will have a logistical advantage compared to the opposing force.
7. Shay’s Rebellion exposed the fact that the U.S. government could not draft or build a
military since the federal government did not have money. They did not have money
because they did not have the ability to tax the American citizens yet.
8. The Battle of Horseshoe Bend put an end to the Creek War and allowed the Americans to
continue to move Southeast. This Battle made Andrew Jackson a hero.

10. The US campaign against Lower Canada failed because of a lack of manpower caused by
New England states.

12. The U.S. transitioned from steam to iron which not only helped them to move faster, but
they were better protected from the enemy.

14. They wanted to invade the North to take pressure off of Virginia and beat the North on
their own territory.
15. Winfield Scott created the Anaconda plan, which was a hold of the South, made up of a
naval blockade, taking control of the Mississippi River, and then further cutting up the
Confederacy. The plan was initially rejected because it was a long-term strategy and
many in the North felt this would be a short conflict.
16. The battle that took place over Forts Henry and Donelson was won by the Union. This is
significant since it was the first real victory for the Union at the start of the Civil War.
17. The Army of the Potomac was successful at Gettysburg because they got rid of most of
its poor leaders. The commanders left managed their troops well in combat and were able
to address failures quickly and before the Confederates could take advantage of it.

19. Calhoun created the concept of an “expansible army.” It was an idea that would keep the
strength of officers and NCOs in the military but would downsize the number of privates.
20. The COG for the union was Lincoln and public opinion. The COG for the Confederacy
was the Confederate Army.
21. Grant had the best relationship with Lincoln since Lincoln wanted Grant commissioned.
Lincoln knew Grant would do anything to win the war and was a highly motivated and
determined officer.
