CONFUSING WORDS
Are

The spelling of words that sound the same but mean something different
confuses many people.

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

word you are trying to spell and how it fits into the context of what you are
writing.

A dictionary definition of are is:

‘are is the form of the present tense when used after we, you, they, there
or plural nouns.’

We use are when referring to more than one person.

e.g. We are happy.

They are miserable because the holiday has been cancelled.
You are out of order to say that.

Sometimes we shorten are to ‘re:

We’re happy.
They’re miserable.
You’re out of order to say that.
BUT He is happy.
She is sad.
John is a big chap.

Notice that when we are referring to one person (he, she, I. John), we use
is.

CONFUSING WORDS
It’s

The spelling of words that sound the same but mean something different
confuses many people.

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

word you are trying to spell and how it fits into the context of what you are

Definition: ‘It’s’ is used only as a shortened form of it is or it has. The

CONFUSING WORDS
Know

The spelling of words that sound the same but mean something different
confuses many people.

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

word you are trying to spell and how it fits into the context of what you are

There are 2 meanings of the word ‘know’.

The dictionary definition of ‘know’ is:
a) ‘to understand’
e.g. I know what you are talking about.
I know them well.
b) ‘to recognise’
e.g. I would know you anywhere.
You know which one I mean.

It might help if you think of knowledge. If you know something or someone,

you have knowledge of it or them. This covers both understanding and
recognition.

Read the following piece of writing and underline the word ‘know’
where you see it.

I don’t think politicians know what they’re talking about. I know more
about being on the dole than all of them put together, although I
admit they know more about posh cars than me. I know we elected
them in the first place, but we didn’t know they knew nothing about
ordinary people, did we?

Think about what ‘know’ means each time you see it.

CONFUSING WORDS
Practice

The spelling of words that sound the same but mean something different
confuses many people.

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

word you are trying to spell and how it fits into the context of what you are
writing.

The dictionary gives us several definitions of practice.

The most common are:
1 A usual or customary action e.g. It was his practice to get up at
six every day and have a cold bath.
2 The repetition of an activity in order to be skilful at it e.g. If
you want to play the piano, you will need lots of practice.
3 The place where a professional person works e.g. doctor’s or
lawyer’s practice.

Which of the three examples above are these? Number them 1, 2 or 3.

 Alison works in the Dental Practice. ....................

The dictionary also tells you the job that the word practice does. Each of
the words in the sentences above is the name of something, that is, they are
nouns. Practice will never have a verb ending such as –ing or have to in front
of it.

CONFUSING WORDS

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

The most common dictionary definition of practise is:

‘To do something repeatedly in order to gain skill e.g. Jane

The dictionary also says that practise is a word that tells us what is

Another way of remembering practise is to compare it with advise. The

words have the same ending though we say them differently. Advise is a
verb, too.

NB If you have a word processor with an American spell check, practise

does not exist! They use practice for noun and verb!

Read the following piece of writing and underline the word practise
(or the words which have practise as a root word) when you see it.

Neeru had practised the sitar for many years and now performed in
public. I had arranged to interview her for an article I was writing
for the local paper. As I walked up to the front door, I could hear
her practising. She told me that her mother has advised her to
practise.

CONFUSING WORDS
Practice/Practise

The spelling of words that sound the same but mean something different
confuses many people.

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

word you are trying to spell and how it fits into the context of what you are
writing.

Before you go any further, make sure you have done the individual
worksheets on Practice and Practise.

To remind you of the meanings of the spelling of words:

Practice means: A usual or customary action.
The repetition of an activity in order to be skilful at it.
The place where a professional person works.
Practice is: a noun, the name of an activity.
Practise means: To do something repeatedly in order to be skilful at it.
Practise is a verb, telling you what is happening.

Now find out if you know the difference.

Fill in the gaps using practice or practise. (Practise might need the
right ending on to make it make sense.)

The spelling of words that sound the same but mean something different

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

There are three meanings of the word ‘too’.

The dictionary definition of ‘too’ is:
1 used to indicate excess (more than enough) e.g. “The box is too

It was too wide, too high and too heavy. The doorway was too small

CONFUSING WORDS
Who’s

The spelling of words that sound the same but mean something different
confuses many people.

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

word you are trying to spell and how it fits into the context of what you are
writing.

The dictionary definition of who’s is:

the short form of who is or who has.
e.g. The lad who’s walking up the road is a friend of our Billy’s =
The lad who is walking up the road is a friend of our Billy’s.
Jenny is moving to York with Tommy who’s just got a job there =
Jenny is moving to York with Tommy who has just got a job there.

The apostrophe shows where the letters are missing.

Read the following piece of writing and underline the short form
who’s.

My children used to love fairy stories. Their favourite was ‘Goldilocks

and the Three Bears’. They always waited for the bears to get back
and would shout, “Who’s been eating my porridge?” together. Chris,
who’s a bit older than Julie, started it and Julie, who’s nine now, joined
in when she started to talk. Then Chris, who’s always been a bit bossy,
would try to get in first with, “Who’s been sleeping in my bed?”

Some of the examples are who’s = who is and some are who’s = who has.
Write out the passage in the long form in the space on the next page. The
first part has been done for you.

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the

word you are trying to spell and how it fits into the context of what you are

The dictionary definition of whose is:

‘The possessive form of who and which, that is, showing the
ownership of something.’
For example, you might say, ‘The man who lent me his car was kind’,
or
‘The man whose car I borrowed was kind’.

Read the following piece of writing and underline the word whose:

Joe and I were going on holiday to Mull with Steve and Lynn, whose
son James was born in Scotland. “Whose car shall we go in, yours or
ours?” I asked Steve. “Whose turn is it to drive?” Steve, whose car is
a bit bigger than ours, tends to do the driving, which isn’t fair on him
really. Joe was concerned that our car, whose exhaust pipe sounded
as if it was going to blow at any moment, might not make it to
Tobermory and back. “If you don’t mind, Steve, I’ll leave it to be
fixed in the garage. The mechanic whose brother I was talking to in
the pub last night sounds very reliable. Then I’ll do the driving
tomorrow.”

Where would you put whose in the following sentences?

Therefore it is really important that you understand the meaning of the
