Ask students to sit on the carpet facing the smart-
1 mins board Introduce the topic: we will be learning about instrument families through a story called The Carnival of Animals Body: INSTRUMENT FAMILIES Walk students through the slides, introducing the four orchestral families and examples of instruments that fall into those families Talk about the different families of instruments: Percussion: anything that you can hit, shake or scrape: use different examples of instruments in the room- show short video Strings: anything you strum, bow or pluck- show video of string quartet (some or all) 26 Brass: anything you have to buzz your lips for: show mins the students how to buzz into a mouth piece and make a sound in a trumpet and show Flight of the Bumblebees Woodwind: blow air through, usually has a reed: bring clarinet and play for them Introduce the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens Show the students what instruments they will be hearing in the music of Carnival of the Animals Read the opening passage and play the music of the introduction
