A conservation management plan (CMP) is a document that helps to develop the management

strategy for historic assets, sites and places. It explains the significance of the asset and examines
how any future use, management alteration or repair will be carried out in order to retain
significance. It forms the way an asset is conserved and managed, by establishing why the asset
matters and what matters about it.
Conservation management plans help to manage the often many different feature and diverse
interest that need to be considered in relation to historical asset. They are particularly useful for
assets such as new buildings in heritage settings, habitants, landscape or open places and
buildings or institutions with heritage assets.
Conservation management plans do not necessarily need to be lengthy documents instead they
should be complied and structured so that they can be easily referenced by those managing the
site.

Mary Stuart hall


It was the first woman’s hall of residence. Mary Stuart built in 1947 and named after the wife of
Bishop Simon Stuart of Namirembe cathedral. She was committed to education of women in
Uganda. She passed away on4th June 2000 after clocking 100yrs. The first students to live in
Mary Stuart hall were six in number. The tower block was built later in the 1960s.

The hall is commonly known as “Box” and the occupants as boxers. Before the construction of
the tower block some of the students resided in one of the premises of the school of education.
The building has a shape of a box so they referred to themselves as boxers. These students were
eventually transferred to the tower block after its completion and they moved with the name.
The hall has strong ties with Lumumba hall. This is referred to as the lumbox solidarity. It is a
social interaction and with the two halls holds social events together and each hall is supposed to
support the other. Mary Stuart hall has a statue symbolising an African woman in the quadrangle
called Gongomesi she is always smartly dressed.
The hall has student leaders commonly known as SCR it is headed by ………………………….
The leaders are democratically elected and serve one academic year.
Mary Stuart hall has its motto as “train a woman a nation trained” existing conditions and trends
Student’s presidents of Mary Stuart hall called for called for the full renovation of the hall,
instead of just works on areas affected by a recent fire. The students say following the recent fire
out break at this female hall of residence, there has been an urgent need for renovation not only
for the affected areas but the entire hall residents of Mary Stuart say there have been a number of
challenges regarding the shared facilities they use at the hall including the poor drainage system.
Students who preferred anonymity told journalism that there is poor wiring at the hall with many
sockets are reportedly not working. With hardly any fire extinguishers the hall stands higher
chances of another fire out break and this worries the students at the hall.
Some students claim that windows in their rooms are broken and leak hence risks of losing their
property to thieves.

Kirunde henry the warden agrees that the hall needs complete renovation both inside and outside.
Unable to record the last time the hall was fully renovated, kirunde revealed that the toilets and
bathrooms in this hall are in a poor condition on top of the leakages in some of the students
rooms.
Issues needs and opportunities of Mary Stuart hall.

The residents of Mary Stuart hall are facing a lot of challenges regarding the shared facilities
they use at the hall and these include;
Leaking roofs especially at the very entire of Mary Stuart hall. A leaky roof is just a structural
problem, but it can actually pose many more safety, and even health risks to the residents.
Constant water intrusion will eventually work down from the attic area to the very foundation of
the hall, which has caused plenty of costly damages on the walls of the hall since it has led to the
development of holes especially on the ground floor. There should be replacement or innovation
of the roofing’s at the hall to avoid leakages that create cracks on the walls and the floors in
order to preserve the hall.

Poor drainage system at Mary Stuart hall is becoming a big problem for a lot of property because
of its formless nature. Water can easily pass through any given space and be absorbed or called
inside the hall……………. It has developed into various disasters some which include mould
and mildew, wood rooting structural weakening and foul smelling odours around the hall. Poor
drainage system should be avoided by installing water pipes in order to create canals for proper
passage of water.

Residents of Mary Stuart hall have a challenge of theft. This is caused by insecurities around the
hall because it lacks proper financing and security guards in order to maintain peaceful needs at
hall. Due to old fences and broken glasses of windows especially in the watching room. Thieves
are able to penetrate into the wall and steal the resident’s property.
There is a problem of broken windows in some rooms of the students and leak. Such situations
are making the residents to loose there property to thieves that penetrate into their rooms through
the broken windows. The warden of Mary Stuart agrees that there is a need to innovative the
whole hall in order to avoid such challenges that students face.

Shortage of water at the hall has negative impact to the resident because students are unable to
get enough water for their general hygiene which eases the spread of skin diseases amongst the
residents. This should be controlled by increasing water for students at the hall.

Poor hygiene in toilets and bathrooms is the general problem affecting the residents of Mary
Stuart people especially, there is flooding of water in most of their bathrooms such dirty
environment cause
