A motorcycle is a 2-wheel and occasionally, 3-wheel engine-powered
vehicle. Various types of motorcycles are available on the market for different purposes, including cruising, long-distance travelling, racing, and off-roading. Motorcycles are popular in many areas of the world.
In 1885, two German inventors; Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm
Maybach, manage to produce first modern model of motorcycle. They managed to attach small petroleum based combustion engine to the wooden bicycle frame. This motorcycle called “Daimler Reitwagen” is today regarded as the first true motorcycle and it was a starting point for all future motorcycle based innovations and improvements. Development of “Reitwagen” started in 1882 when Daimler and Maybach started the production of their experimental high-speed single-cylinder engine. Their initial plan was to make small automobile, but they opted to test their engine design on a bicycle frame. Small 264-cubic-centimetre, single cylinder, 0.5 horsepower engine managed to power the motorcycle with the speed of only 7 miles per hour (11km/h). During the one of the first test runs seat of the motorcycle caught fire from the heat emanated from the nearby engine. Daimler and Maybach patented during August 1885, and the final version was presented to the public in 1886.
Original models of “Daimler Reitwagen” were sadly lost in 1903 factory
fire at Cannstatt, Germany. Several replicas exist in museum collections in Gemany, USA, Australia and Japan.
ADVANTAGES:
Increased physical health. Moving around a large machine
obviously requires muscle engagement; you actually engage a lot of muscle too. Increased mental health. When you exercise and engage your muscles, your body releases endorphins; which essentially makes you “happy” or “feel good” Money saver. Motorcycles get much better mileage than most commuter cars, in fact they get about double the miles per gallon.
DISADVANTAGES:
More dangerous. It’s the lack of protection that motorcycles provide
which make sit dangerous than cars. More susceptible to weather. Getiing caught in bad rain or storm while riding is not only uncomfortable, but it’s also dangerous. Limited space. Using your motorcycle to run errands such as going to grocery store is pretty much inconvenient. Bigger target for thieves. It is much easier to access and lighter than cars.
