Together with FITUR, ARCOmadrid is the first major fair of this year in which IFEMA
celebrates its 40th anniversary. ARCO and IFEMA have parallel successful lives
consolidating Madrid as a preeminent location for economy, innovation and art;
all of them interdependent realities given that innovation propels economy, and
the new horizons depicted by creativity stimulate investigation, innovation, and
progress.
ARCOmadrid focuses this year in a concept: It’s Just a Matter of Time, precisely
underlining the innovation and exploration of new paths and artistic forms that stem
from the oeuvre of the great Cuban-Northamerican artist Félix González-Torres.
ARCOmadrid presents this year more than 200 galleries from 30 different
countries. 171 of them participate in the general program, elaborated by the
Organizing Committee, while the rest are divided in an extraordinary number of
curated programs, among which the above mentioned It’s Just a Matter of Time
stands out. This program is organized by Alejandro Cesarco and Mason Leaver-Yep,
together with Manuel Segade, and it features 13 artists from 11 galleries.
As you can see in this catalogue, there are plenty of top international galleries
with a space in ARCOmadrid: Massimo Minini and Francesca Minini, Perrotin,
Sies+Höke, Buchholz, Barbara Weiss, Nordenhake and Jan Mot are just a few, and
mentioning all of them would be difficult in this short text. I only want to highlight
the fact that one third of them comes from several Spanish cities and another
third are Latin American galleries and artists, specially Brazilian and Argentinian.
This 39 th edition brings some news. It’s worth mentioning that, for the 1st time,
the general audience will be able to join guided visits run by professionals
around the fair. This is an excellent opportunity for the madrileños who, after
inscribing and paying a 20€ ticket, will be able to get to know and appreciate
better the fundamentals, keys, trends, and processes leading to the creation of a
contemporary work of art.
y Francesca Minini, Perrotin, Sies+Höke, Buchholz, Barbara Weiss, Nordenhake
This year, again, February brings with it one of the most relevant artistic events
in the international cultural landscape: ARCOmadrid. The 39 th edition of the
International Contemporary Art Fair will be, once more, a milestone strengthening
the true platform for the contemporary art market in Spain while supporting the
promotion of artistic heritage through collecting, and helping the link between
galleries, collectors, institutions, and other art agents.
The institution is satisfied to confirm ARCO’s good health and the art world’s trust.
These two aspects became apparent in the increment of the received participation
applications. The interest galleries show, together with the proposals involving
riskier projects for their booths as well as the high quality of their contents,
ratifies ARCOmadrid as both an international artistic center point and a symbol
for Spanish avant-garde culture.
The news related to this edition include the incorporation of the concept It’s just a
Matter of Time as a central theme that will observe artistic practices that relate
to Félix González-Torres’ oeuvre. This section will be one of the curated programs,
together with Dialogues and Opening, which, added to the General Program, will
gather 210 galleries from 30 countries in Madrid.
With all this, I am convinced that ARCOmadrid 2020 will be a great fair and a
unique opportunity to present contemporary art to the world.
Welcome to ARCOmadrid 2020.
Bienvenidos a ARCOmadrid 2020.

Since its creation in 1987, the ARCO Foundation promotes, investigates, and disseminates contemporary art. The
Foundation created the ARCO Foundation Collection with the purpose of revitalizing and propelling interest in
present day art. The Collection consists of more than 300 artworks acquired during the fair and currently hosted
by the CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, which is supported by the Madrid Regional Government.
Among the many events organized by the ARCO Foundation during the fair, there are several activities focused on
promoting collecting among young people: #mecomprounaobra (#Ibuyanartwork), includes a selection of works
with a prize under 2.020€ that have been suggested by the participating galleries. The selection can be found at
www.koyac.net. The First Collector initiative is a free of charge consultancy service provided during ARCOmadrid.
Besides that, by organizing Foro, we promote contemporary art knowledge with a special focus on the work of
institutions and artists.
This year, the ARCO Foundation Space -meeting point for the Amigos ARCO- presents works by Mexican artist
Tania Pérez Córdova in a space specifically designed by Casa Josephine.
Following the tradition, the ARCO Foundation will award the “A” Prizes for Collectors, honoring the work of people
and institutions that support contemporary art. In 2020, the winners are:
Engel Collection
Erling Kagge Collection
Daniel y Mirella Levinas Collection

ArtsLibris is now present in ARCOmadrid for five consecutive years. In 2020, it will host more than forty exhibitors
and a cultural program lead by the lecture series coordinated and hosted by Andrea Soto Calderón, PhD in
Philosophy, UAB, at the Professional Forum Talks space in ARCO.
As a consequence, ArtsLibris becomes a link where dialogue about contemporary publishing and artists books,
understood not only in editorial terms, is fostered. This is a space for reflection where practices related to artists
books as well as their context and their future within artistic production can be shared.
Considering the profound artistic changes of attitudes taking place during the last fifty years, we wonder: What
can an artist book be today?
Like last year’s edition, we present the talks and presentations space Speaker’s Corner, a meeting point for
visitors and exhibitors where we offer an ideal environment for reflection and dialogue. This space complements
the exhibitors’ publications.
Furthermore, in 2020, ArtsLibris organizes its 11th edition in Barcelona with a hundred international publishers,
and, for two consecutive years, in ARCOlisboa. After the 2019 experience, with more than thirty exhibitors and
a great number of publishing houses from Portugal and Brasil, ArtisLibris returns to ARCOlisboa in May with a
bigger space. We look forward to strengthen the bond between Mediterranean and Latin American practices, as
well as our bond with ARCO.
Thus, 2020 constitutes a significant change of scale where ArtsLibris definitively consolidates as a reference point
for artists books, photobooks, and self-published books.

brouwn, Alighiero Boetti, Henrik Olesen, General Idea, Group Material, Roni Horn, Julie Ault o Wolfgang Tillmans,
entre otros.
Being a bookseller, is to choose and recommend. To assert one’s subjectivity, whilst excluding an exhaustive
approach. Being a publisher, is to conceive the most accurate and meaningful form. Being a curator is to confront,
rethink content as a form. Three professions that share books and bookshelves.
The book is apprehended in a transversal manner, by confronting it to different mediums, finding interest in its
use to the context in which it appeared. These intersections give the bookseller’s profession a broader definition,
ranging from curator of projects such as vis-à-vis or je déballe ma bibliothèque, to that of an editor when a
book needs to be thought of as an exhibition space as for Allan Kaprow. Posters. With this constant redefining
of the profession, comes the notion of complementarity, because similarly to the library, projects come about as
additions symbolised by the &.
On the occasion of the 39th edition of ARCOmadrid and in relation with the reading of artistic practices based
on the work of Félix González-Torres Christophe daviet-thery will show a selection of books and ephemeras by
stanley brouwn, Alighiero Boetti, Henrik Olesen, General Idea, Group Material, Roni Horn, Julie Ault or Wolfgang
Tillmans among others.

A visual and emotional
journey through Jaume Plensa’s creative process
palabras, poemas e ideas abstractas.

COAM

Architecture has been oscillating between two poles: the fine arts related world and professional fields specialized
in applied techniques. Spaces and volumes have always been appreciated from those points of view. In some
cases, architects’ sketches and drawings have been treated as artworks beyond mere building instructions. Hand
drawings, outlines, illustrations, etc. have become paintings or etchings available for purchase to a wider public.
In this space, the Colegio de Arquitectos (The Madrid Association of Architects) goes further and shows building
objects, pieces, prototypes, mock-ups, or elements forming spaces and volumes, as sculptural objects. Prototypic
buildings in Madrid, together with contemporary constructions currently in development, will move into ARCO’s
space, thus presenting a booth that looks like the rest of the stands while providing the conceptual shift embedded
in the presentation of objects that are not art, even if a distracted audience could mistake them for artworks. In
this edition of ARCOmadrid, COAM’s booth presents a space for live-recorded conversations that revolve around
new links between contemporary Art and Architecture. We materialize this by screening a number of interviews
with architects at the AR-COAM space.
Besides this, a selection of three emblematic buildings and three 1:1 scale details related to structural/constructive
elements will be shown in our booth at ARCOmadrid 2020. We focus on form and its decontextualization in a piece
that is special due to its size and which represents the architectural work of three generations who synthetized
the spirit of the times for each generation in Madrid. Besides, we will show five minutes interviews with architects,
recorded previously at COAM. Other video documents could be added.

Esculturas, instalaciones, performances, intervenciones, talleres sociales, happenings, pintura mural, proyectos
Detrás del Muro (Behind the Wall) is one of the most famous projects in the current Latin-American art scene.
During three editions, and through ten years, it managed to bring the fundamental premise of the Habana Biennial
to the last consequences: to conquer the city with creativity. With this in mind, a selection of Cuban artists, who
live in the Island and abroad, together with relevant international artists, were invited to work at the Habana
Malecón.
Sculptures, Installations, performances, interventions, socially engaged workshops, happenings, mural painting,
architectural projects, and video projections give shape to the varied repertoire of events. More than a curatorial
sustainable product, this is a creative experience in which the multiple negotiation processes involved are as
important as the ways in which the audience and the community consume the artworks. As a consequence, this
edition of ARCOmadrid will receive artworks that can function as both multiples and as live processes.
We have selected for this occasion a group of small volumes that flirt with the idea of mockups and drafts. They
remind us of the complexity of some of the artistic events that took place at the Habana Malecón those years.
This core will be accompanied by a group of small format works that will underline the creative diversity present
under the conceptual umbrella hold by Detrás del Muro. Thus, the most urgent idea for us is: Detrás del Muro as
a diverse artistic experience.

YO SOY TU BIOPODER
I AM YOUR BIOPOWER
We present the work of seven video artists from Huelva –most of them women– who focus on the cultural,
ecological, and economic power of salt in the Huelva province, as well as the important role that women play in
salt production. Biopower, as coined by Michel Foucault, is currently a relevant and absolutely contemporary
notion. Biopower is the result of administrative control over sexuality, hygiene, education demographics, or
gastronomy. Salt production –ever present in the Huelva province–, together with the women involved in its
production, become a metaphor for biopower.
The salt lakes are not only a tourist attraction. Salt has a great therapeutic potential beyond its uses in
gastronomy, conservation and the production of different local delicacies like ham and tuna jerky. There are
several magnesium pools in the Huelva Province that provide therapeutic joy for thousands, for example, the
Salinas del Aleman and the Biomaris, in Isla Cristina.
Our booth presents video art, an artistic discipline based in moving images and/or audio data. We offer an
attractive artistic space, interactive, that offers the audience the possibility of smelling and feeling the salt from
the Huelva Province. This project keeps many of the seventeen “Sustainable Development Goals” approved by
the United Nations General Assembly for people, the planet and prosperity, such as: health, well being, gender
equality, affordable and non polluting energy, climate aware and pro-ecosystems life actions.

miradas.
All through history, museums served as inspiration for artists, who contemplated and studied artworks made by
their predecessors, sometimes following their teachings, some other times challenging them. In both cases, the
relationship between artists from the past and the present was fructiferous.
The Friends of Museo del Prado Foundation, aiming at supporting and making the Museum known, invited twelve
contemporary photographers to dialogue through their cameras with the collection. As a consequence of that
work, a folder with twenty four photographs reflecting on the artistic richness and the historical significance of
the Prado is born. Those images confirm how the inspiring atmosphere of the Museum is still intact.
The participating artists, who belong to three different generations and develop diverse ways of understanding
and using photography, found inspiration in the great masters at the Prado as well as in the building and in the
visitors. They all turned their thoughts and reflections into new gazes.

From the particular to the universal. This motto inspired canary sculptor Martín Chirino’s artistic career and guides
the creation of the Foundation for Art and Reflection with his name. The Foundation is born not just as a privileged
window into the different stages of his oeuvre, but also as an active Humanities center, open to reflection and
debate. Among the statutory goals, one stands out: “promoting the collection, study and dissemination of Martín
Chirino’s artistic heritage, historical relevance, and creative mastery as well as completing the documentation of
his oeuvre”. Complementarily, the aim that gives meaning to this new canary foundation is to contextualize and
promote the valuable legacy of the islands’ culture in today’s complex world. Martin Chirino’s oeuvre is crucial
historical evidence supporting that endeavor. In a dialogue that is perfectly orchestrated according to the motto,
this contextualization embraces Martin Chirino, the Canary Islands, and the world.

‘The instant before something happens’ gathers works by artists Gabriel Pericàs, Ian Waelder and Lara Fluxà,
curated by Allélon collective (Adriana A. Leanza and María Lucía Marcote García).
The time dimension that characterizes the practices of these three Majorca-born artists differs from the
human dimension: Time runs with different pauses, both similar and alien to ours. The exhibition focuses on the
precise instant before something might happen: the false serenity of objects about to transform, or inhabitants
crystallized just before an action we will never witness.
The project ‘The instant before something happens’ is the winner of the Institut d’Estudis Baleàrics open call for
this booth. Imma Prieto, Martí Manen and Tiago de Abreu formed the selection jury committee.
The IEB is a cultural institution of the Balearic Islands Government that promotes Balearic culture and language

KOYAC (kicking off young art-collecting) is a project conceived to promote art collecting among new audiences by
adopting the premise that good art is not only for the millionaires.
We develop an exhaustive search and selection procedure in galleries all around Europe. Our mission is finding artworks
under 2500€ + taxes and making them easily available in a transparent and accessible way at www.koyac.net. All the
artworks offered in our website, authored by either well renowned artists or emerging artists, are endorsed by top
galleries.
KOYAC stands out as the ideal initiation into collecting art for all those who want to buy good art but do not
know where to start, or did not imagine they could afford it. Besides, aiming to promote contemporary art
among the youth, KOYAC develops a specialized and didactic weekly magazine explaining the fundaments of the
contemporary art market, providing tools for readers to feel more comfortable in it.
As a consequence of their shared goals in relation to promoting art collecting, KOYAC and the ARCO Foundation
join their efforts once again in #mecomprounaobra (#Ibuyanartwork). This initiative invited the participating
galleries to offer a selection of artworks under 2.020€ + Taxes at www.koyac.net. During ARCO, the galleries are
invited to show and offer those artworks.
