Anacostia River Tunnel System 2-Year Anniversary
On March 23, 2018, the first phase of the DC Clean Rivers
Project tunnel system for controlling combined sewer
overflows (CSOs) to the Anacostia River was placed into
operation. The project was delivered on time, on budget,
and in accordance with the consent decree executed in
2005 between DC Water and the Federal and District
governments.

The Anacostia River Tunnel System provides

control for all of the CSO outfalls along the
Anacostia River:
 Over 7.2 billion gallons of combined sewer
overflow captured to date
Anacostia
River Tunnel
 Over 3,300 tons of trash, debris, and other solids
captured
Blue Plains Advanced  Exceeding predicted capture rate (90%>80%)
