Expressing and responding to opinions

At home

G = Gary W = Woman

G: Have you seen this article in the local paper about the boy who was arrested?

W: No, what is it?

G: A teenage boy was arrested for robbing a shop last month. He threatened the

shopkeeper, and stole seventy-five pounds from the cash till. Guess what sentence

he was given? Just twenty-five hours community service.

W: Good.

G: Good? I don't know about you but I don't think twenty-five hours is enough.

W: Really, why do you say that?

G: Well, it sets a bad example.

W: A bad example?

G: Yes. I think the boy should be sent to prison.

W: Oh I don't know about that. In my opinion we should find out the reason he committed

the crime in the first place.

G: What do you mean?

W: Well, clearly that boy has a problem, I think we have to understand the problem first.

It might be that he was really poor and –

G: Well maybe so but it doesn't excuse the crime, it's wrong to steal.

W: Well that's true, but perhaps that boy needs to be helped not punished.

G: I don't know. I think you're just too soft.

W: I think you're late for work, it's ten past eight.

Expressing and responding to opinions

In a corner shop

G = Gary K = Keith

G: Hi Keith.

K: Hi Gary, how are you today?

G: Oh very well thank you Keith. And a packet of crisps please.

K: There you go.

G: Hey, I saw that article in the local paper about the boy who robbed your shop.

K: Oh that. Yes he's not my favourite customer.

G: You must have had a terrible experience.

K: Ah yes indeed, I didn't like it very much.

G: And he only got twenty-five hours' community service, terrible isn't it?

K: Terrible? I'm not so sure, the boy's had a difficult life and he is only sixteen.

G: Difficult life? Does it matter? He should be locked up in prison.

K: Prison? Well I take your point it is a serious crime but, to be honest I don't really

agree.

G: Why not?

K: Well for this boy prison isn't the answer, and you have to remember that he's very

young, and he's had a tough life, and we all make mistakes sometimes.

G: Well not me. Look I've got to go, see you in the morning Keith.

K: Okay Gary see you later. Oh and Gary, you haven't paid for your newspaper and

crisps.
