INTRODUCTION

Since difficulties with reading, writing and/or math are recognizable problems during the school

years, the signs and symptoms of learning disabilities are most often diagnosed during that

time. To easily determine and remediate a child before entering higher school levels I focused on

a 4 years old child. I believed that the success of every child comes from the teachers, its strategy

and their implementation.

This Case Study Report was a partial fulfillment requirement in English 108 that aims to:

 Observe the child’s behavior.

 Examine the writing capacity of a child through various observations. .

 Implement an appropriate program for the betterment of the child.

Chapter 1

SUBJECT’S PROFILE

Name: PRINCE KHALEB MIKHAIL GARCERA

Age: 4

Birthdate: August 24, 2015 Birth Place: San Pablo City

School: Day Care Center Brgy. I- B

Level: Day Care

A. Background

Khaleb was a premature baby, because he was born 2 months earlier than the expected

day of delivery. All throughout his childhood, his family talks to him in a normal manner,

because they thought that “baby talking” might influence his way of speaking once he grows up.

The speculation was right, they continue talking to him in a normal manner until he reached the

age of 4. Khaleb speaks Filipino and English words fluently. One thing that also helps him speak

fluently now is the internet. The educational videos that can be found online had a big part in

molding Khaleb to be what he is now.

He is an active child and always participate with the activities with his peers. He is a very

approachable kid.
B. Interests

Every child has their own interests and Khaleb is a child who always wants to play even

at school. He loves to play cars and other toys, but mostly he is spending his time holding a

mobile phone where he used to watch different kid’s shows such as Bob the Train, Tayo the

Little Bus, Dave and Ava Nursery Rhymes, Little Baby Bum and Kids Tv. After his watching

time he always tries to imitate what he have watch and because of this practice, it is very

noticeable that he can speak English language and Filipino language fluently. He also loves

tracing and connecting the dots. His family do not force him to learn to reading and writing,

instead they let them Khaleb to ask for it once he is done with other stuffs such as playing. He

also loves to watch Disney shows such as Aladdin and Moana. As a matter of fact, he even

memorized some of the lines and songs in every movie.

C. Attitude

Khaleb is a moody but sweet little child. He expresses his anger through yelling. He also

used to mess his things once he is mad but his madness is easily melting once his mother

approaches him. He is an obedient and caring child to his mother. He appreciate every little

things even small deeds. He knows how to express appreciation and gratitude by saying “Thank

you”, and if he committed a mistake, he will say “I’m Sorry” though sometimes he say those

through whispering.

Whenever he wants something, like for example a toy, he will say “Bibili ako nyan pag

madami na laman ng piggy bank ko”. Yes a piggy bank, his parents bought him a piggy bank

wherein he puts all the money once he was given by his parents and relatives.
Khaleb is very attached to the people that is around him through his entire growing up

days, the environment at home also has a great impact on what he is now.

D. Ability in Reading

As a 4 years old child, Khaleb was already aware of the different letters of the alphabet

and he also knows the phonics. He is also aware of reading numbers. This ability was seen when

he was 2. His mother said that she have read a certain article wherein a child’s brain developed

earlier. She started playing instrumental music during Khaleb’s infancy. From an early age,

babies can hear the difference between different types of sounds. After just a few weeks, a baby

is able to identify their mother’s voice from other people. Exposure to music enhances a child’s

natural ability to decode sounds and words.

By singing nursery rhymes to your child, you can help them to identify sound patterns and learn

through repetition. In addition to that, music also helps children anticipate what is coming next in

a poem or a song and they know how to put these patterns in a sequence. By mastering these

skills, children build the base of literacy and numeracy.

E. Current Reading Program

As I interviewed Khaleb’s teacher, she said that the main focus of their program is the

advancement early childhood development. In order to be responsive to children and their neeeds

in different socio-cultural mileage, the program implement curricula that are age and individually

appropriate, and socio-culturally relevant. The children’s home language is used as the medium

of their communication.
F. Other Problems

Khaleb has a short time focusing on one thing or activity. He seldom holds a pen that is why he

is having a hard time when it comes to writing. He write some letters in a different manner.

Chapter 2

STRATEGY

To be able to cope up with the said problem above and to improve Khaleb’s skills, I come up

looking for a best way to distinguish the specific problem, and look for a better solution to it.

First is to help the child develop the grasping of a pen and second is the tracing activity.

A. Developing Pen Grasp

Pincer grasp starts to develop around 10 months old. This is also when a baby

is starting to user finger foods. They develop this grasp by pinching small

objects, such as food pieces.

G. This type of grasp is typically seen around 12 to 15 months old.

“Palmar” refers to the palm of the hand being used to grasp an object.

“Supinate” is a term used to describe how the arm and wrist are placed

in relation to the middle of the body. As a child gets older, you can
encourage them to use a more functional grasp by breaking crayons in

half. You can also use smaller writing tools rather than a full-size pencil,

crayon or marker.

H. This grasp is typically seen around 2 to 3 years old. A child is beginning

to place the fingers in a downward position on the writing utensil, but all

of the fingers are being used. Digital refers to the fingers being used to

grasp instead of the entire palm like we saw in the Palmar Supinate

Grasp. The term “pronate” refers to the wrist being turned down and

away from the middle of the body.

I. This grasp can also be seen around the same time as the digital pronate

grasp, between 2 and 3 years old. As a child begins to perfect a

functional grasp, they could start using a quadrupod grasp. A quadrupod

grasp is considered a functional grasp if you ever have a child evaluated

for handwriting concerns. I actually use a quadrupod grasp myself. It is a

four-finger grasp which means three fingers are on the writing utensil,

index, thumb, and middle finger. It is supported by the other two fingers

which are tucked into the palm.

J. A static tripod grasp will be seen between 3 to 4 years old, as a child is

perfecting the tripod grasp. It is a three-finger grasp and includes the

index and thumb, with the writing utensil resting on the middle finger,

The rest of the fingers are tucked into the palm. Static refers to how the

child moves the pencil. Static movement means they are using the wrist

and forearm to move the pencil across the writing surface, instead of the

fingers. The fingers are still, or static.

K. A dynamic tripod grasp is the most

functional grasp possible. “Dynamic” means

that the movement of the pencil or writing

utensil comes from the fingers with the

support of the wrist and forearm. You will

see this grasp develop around 5 to 6 years old.

B. Tracing Activity

Tracing activities will help a child to develop or practice their writing by connecting the lines/

dots to form a figure. I chose to have it on hand and at mobile phones. I had downloaded an app

where there is a tracing activity and other exercises.

C. Conditioning Theory

In enhancing the capability of a child, we should always remember that they are still a child, they

will not do anything proper unless you give reward or praises. I also applied the Conditioning

theory of Ivan Pavlov. This will help Khaleb to do his task accordingly.
According to Ivan Pavlov’s Theory of Conditioning, a learner will associates an unconditioned

stimulus that already results in a response (such as reflex) with a new, conditioned stimulus. As

as result, the new stimulus brings about the same response.

WRITING ANALYSIS

A. Capacity Level

PEN GRASP DEVELOPMENT

6

0
week 1 week 2 week 3 week 4

Level of Grasping

As weeks pass by, Khaleb’s grasping of pen develops to what is appropriate for his age. It

is so far determined that the strategy I have used is effective and suitable for his problem

at his age.
B. Writing Strength

Khaleb usually practice writing before he goes to sleep. At that moment, he is tired of

playing and that is why his attention is diverted into writing. He is also a fast learner that

he was able to accomplish the task given. He is good at tracing activities. He enjoys

tracing a lot.

C. Weakness

During the implementation of the strategy, there is no noticeable problem that inhibits

Khaleb’s learning. The environment does not affect him nor the family.

Chapter 4

RECOMMENDATION

My recommendation will focus on the parents because I believe that every teacher

at school gives their pre-schoolers some activities that will enhance their skills when it

comes to reading and writing. As a parent, we should be our child’s teacher at home, not

just by telling them what is right from wrong but also by helping them build their skills

through various activities. There are many books available at store that could help them

practice their writing, I would recommend to give them other books or resources other

than the books given to them from the school. Moreover, educational apps are also

available online or even offline. This will help a child build the global competency he

needs as he grows when it comes to technology. Generation Alpha were now more on

using technology devices, let not be your child an outcast but still guide them on using it.
Chapter 5

A. SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCE

“We are living in a diverse world, where we all have a unique version of

ourselves.”

In my entire days of accomplishing this study I found out that not all child are the

same, there are different characteristics and skills one child could possess. And as a

future educator, we should deal with it and we should be able to cope with it. We should

be open-minded and our patience bag should be never- ending.

I enjoyed every moment, because my subject was my son though there were times

that I yell at him because he is being mean other than that, the whole experience was

great. I came to notice what my child’s weaknesses and strength and I am happy that the

strategies that I had implemented to him was effective.

B. IDENTIFYING THE GAPS

I do not notice any gaps during the whole study because it went smoothly as it is.
