Aside from maintaining near normal blood glucose levels for Diabetes Mellitus, nutrition therapy
aims to achieve optimum serum lipid levels, maintain DBW, prevent complications, and improve overall
health of the diabetic. The steps involved in medical nutrition therapy for individuals with diabetes mellitus
found in Appendix F can help the students in planning a diabetic diet.
I. OBJECTIVES
The Medical Nutrition Therapy for Diabetes Mellitus is as follows:
1. Attain normal blood glucose levels, lipid and lipoprotein profiles and blood pressure levels.
2. Prevent complications, and
3. Improve the patient’s health.
II. PROCEDURE
1. For all six groups, plan a one-day diabetic diet using the following diet prescription:
Diet Rx 2000 kcal CHO 45% PROTEIN 30% FATS 25%
2. Submit individual worksheets at the end of laboratory activity.
