A Study on the Impact of Listening to Music that affects the Mood and

Performance of Students

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Sounds are all around us. A sound is made when the particles in a

medium which is generally air in reality, are set moving and constrained out of a

condition of rest. As time goes by, people discovered that music can be created

by organizing sounds. Through the creativity of the humans, music came to

reality and was born. Music is made up of sounds, vibrations and silent moments,

and it does not generally need to be charming or beautiful. Music tends to be

utilized to pass on an entire scope of experience, environment and emotions.

Music has many different kinds and genre, from Blues to Classical, Country to

Electronic, International to Jazz, Latin to Pop/Rock, Rap to Reggae, and many

more. Music can be anything. A song is a single work of music that is ordinarily

proposed to be sung by the human voice with distinct and fixed pitches and

patterns using sound and silence and a variety of forms that often include the

repetition of sections. Listening to music may cause an individual to feel joyful,

sad, angry, hyped up, relaxed etc. and sometimes the listener can feel more than

one emotion during a song. Music with different styles and genres that has been
created by people around the world can be a different language but most likely it

is English for it is the national language of the world. Music is very popular to the

people around the world especially to the one who are fund of listening to songs.

Music can affect the mood of a person or a student in many ways.

The mood of a certain individual can be known as the atmosphere or the overall

feeling of the individual. However, emotion is a psychological state differently

connected with thoughts, feelings, behavioural responses, and a degree of

pleasure or displeasure. There is currently no scientific consensus on a

definition.  Emotion is often intertwined with mood, temperament, personality,

disposition, and motivation. “Emotions arise out of the bodily actions we take in

response to what is happening in our lives” (William James).

Music and mood are closely interrelated. Listening is to give your attention to

sound or action, listening to a sad or happy song on the radio can make an

individual feel more sad or happy. However, such mood changes not only affect

how an individual feel, it also change the individual’s perception. (Jacob Jolij and

Maaike Meurs) “ Music has an even more dramatic effect on perception: even if

there is nothing to see, people sometimes still see happy faces when they are

listening to happy music and sad faces when they are listening to sad music”.

According to Victor Hugo (2005), "Music is the universal language of mankind”

(Henry Wadsworth). And even more emotionally, “Music expresses that which

cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent”. Concluding up what Victor

Hugo and Henry Wadsworth said that music can be felt or understand by the
human brain even if the lyrics on the music are not understandable. “Emotions

are one of the most fascinating features of the human mind. Music is an

equally extraordinary characteristic. Understanding the special interaction

between the two may take us closer to understanding the fundamental

nature of both.”

Music therapy is the use of music to enhance wellbeing or practical results. Music

therapy is a creative arts therapy, consisting of a process in which a music

therapist uses music and all of its facets physical, emotional, mental, social,

aesthetic, and spiritual to help clients improve their physical and mental health.

Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking,

feeling and behaving. The study of personality understands individual differences

in particular personality characteristics, such as sociability or irritability.

"Personality refers to individuals' characteristic patterns of thought, emotion, and

behavior, together with the psychological mechanisms hidden or not behind

those patterns." (Funder, 2001).

"People do actually define themselves through music and relate to other people

through it but we haven’t known in detail how music is connected to identity,"

(Adrian North of Heriot, 1990) the reason people sometimes feel defensive about

their taste in music might be related to how much it relates to attitudes and

personality. Listening to music affects the mood and the emotion of a certain

individual. A study was performed that a person listening to Mozart, working was

more productive than a person working in silence. The effect was named as the
Mozart Effect. However, it is not necessary that the music that the individual

listens to has to be Mozart or even classical music in general. Rather, it is just

being the music the listener enjoys. This means that if the person greatly enjoys

listening to music

Perception is the way you think about or understand someone or

something. On the other hand, musical perception is

the auditory perception of musical sounds.

There is no straightforward meaning of music which covers all cases. It is an

art form, and opinions come into play. Music is whatever people think is

music. A different approach is to list the qualities of music must have, such

as, sound which has rhythm, melody, pitch, timbre, etc. These and different

endeavors, don't catch all parts of music, or forget models which certainly are

music. (Thomas Clifton) music is "a specific corresponding connection set up

between an individual, his conduct, and a sounding article" Melodic

experience and the music, together, are called wonders, and the action of

depicting marvels is called phenomenology.

The research was conducted to target specifically students on what would be the

impact of listening to music to the mood and emotion of the students. “Knowing

the type of music you listen to can actually lead to surprisingly accurate

predictions about your personality” (Jason Rentfrow and Sam Gosling).

focusing on the emotions and memorable experiences associated with

listening to sad songs.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found

that children admitted to the emergency department who listened to music during

routine procedures showed less distress and reported lower pain scores than

those who didn’t listen to music.

The study included a total of 42 children aged 3 to 11 years who had an IV line

placed. Half of them were randomly selected to listen to music selected by a

music therapist during the procedure. Health care providers reported that it was

easier to insert the IV line in children who were listening to the music; health

providers also reported more satisfaction with the placement compared to those

who did not listen to music.

According to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll, 53 percent of teens 12 to 17 do

something else while studying. At 87 percent, listening to music was the most

popular side activity for those who balanced studying with another activity. This

generation of teens is growing up multitaskers, and the lure of computers,

televisions and iPods is too great for today’s teens to ignore even while doing

homework.

Silence may be golden, but most workers feel they're more productive at the

office when listening to music, new research from staffing firm Accountemps

shows. Eighty-five percent of survey respondents who are able to do so say they

enjoy turning on the tunes at work. Employees ages 18 to 34 appreciate music

while working the most (95 percent), compared to those ages 35-54 (84 percent)

and 55 and older (66 percent). More than seven in 10 (71 percent) professionals

said they are at least somewhat more productive when music is playing at the

office, with pop, rock and country songs providing the biggest boost. "While

music can be a stress reliever or source of motivation for many workers, it can be

a distraction for others," (Michael Steinitz)

The music genres that Analyst personality types tend to appreciate more than the

other Roles – rock (80%), classical (76%), jazz (54%, tied with Diplomats), punk

(46%), and metal (44%) which also tend to be the ones that are most often

respected for the sheer technical expertise at work as much as for the more

emotional qualities of these songs. As being stated that “The results help us to

pinpoint the ways people regulate their mood with the help of music, as well as

how music rehabilitation and music therapy might tap into these processes of

comfort, relief, and enjoyment,” (Tuomas Eerola, 2006)

Another investigation led by scientists at Heriot-Watt University took a gander at

in excess of 36,000 members from everywhere throughout the world. Members

were approached to rate in excess of 104 distinctive melodic styles

notwithstanding offering data about parts of their identity.

"Individuals do really characterize themselves through music and identify with

other individuals through it yet we haven't known in detail how music is

associated with character," (Adrian North of Heriot, 1990) the reason individuals
once in a while feel protective about their preference for music may be identified

with the amount it identifies with frames of mind and identity.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The following literature found are represented in this research paper it may

present various data and statements that concern the research topic.
FOREIGN LITERATURE

A collection of exact work has demonstrated that tuning in to ostensibly

miserable music incites a multifaceted passionate reaction that isn't obviously

negative or positive (Vuoskoski and Kawakami 2013), (Taruffi and Koelsch,

2014), also, that there are sure identity factors that are reliably connected with

the satisfaction in bitterness inciting music (e.g., Garrido and Schubert,

2011; Vuoskoski et al., 2012; Taruffi and Koelsch, 2014; Eerola et al., 2016).

Besides, sad music has been appeared to actuate trouble related inclinations in

memory and judgment (Vuoskoski and Eerola, 2015), proposing that tuning in to

pitiful music is undoubtedly ready to initiate 'authentic' tragic full of feeling states

in audience members.

During the previous two decades, numerous hypothetical records for the 'misery

oddity' have been proposed by various researchers. Schubert (1996) proposed

that, albeit positive and negative feelings are commonly associated with joy and

disappointment (separately), the association between negative feeling and

dismay gets restrained in a stylish setting, for example, music tuning in. Juslin

(2013), then again, has suggested that the satisfaction in pity prompting music

may have nothing to do with misery itself, however that tragic music is

experienced as pleasurable basically in light of the fact that it is tastefully

satisfying or 'delightful'. To be sure, exact investigations have recorded solid

positive connections between's apparent pity and saw magnificence in any event

in Western music convention.

interestingly, (Wassiliwizky et al., 2015) likewise discovered that sentiments of

being moved were the best indicator of the probability of encountering tasteful

chills; pleasurable substantial sensations usually depicted as a 'spreading

gooseflesh'. Sentiments of misery were additionally decidedly connected with the

probability of chills, yet there was no measurably critical relationship between felt

happiness and chills. Comparable discoveries have likewise been gotten with

regards to music tuning in, where dismal music has been observed to be

altogether bound to inspire stylish chills than cheerful music Panksepp (1995)

Prevalent blue grass music (Dierks Bentley), "Down home music has dependably

been the best therapist that 15 bucks can purchase." Well, perhaps somebody

may be in an ideal situation not purchasing that CD and rather putting something

aside for a genuine psychologist, "… content examination of blue grass music

tunes frequently proposes that blue grass music fans may have hoisted suicide

hazard to the degree that their ways of life

Studies involving noise as a distraction have demonstrated the same ambiguous

results regarding their effect on cognitive processing as studies involving

background music. Dobbs, Furnham, and McClelland (2011) conducted a study

that tested the effect of distracters, specifically background noise and music, on

cognitive tasks for introverts and extraverts.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Philippine music is rich stunning. Most Filipinos, in any case, don't have a clue

about these riches, exploited people as Filipinos are of a communicated media

that spreads Asian amusement music, all day every day. If at any point music

composed by Filipinos is allowed to be heard, it is 90% of the time, a modest pop

assortment replicated or adjusted from remote hits..

About 80% of Filipino tunes in the English lingo are about love. As shown by

studies, the Philippines is one of the countries where love and organization are

obvious. Filipinos are the kind of people who may reliably look for tunes that

relate to their lives. They are focused on a particular nostalgic tendency, which

has the whole preoccupation and media adventures in the Philippines. By far

most of the movies, course of action, and tunes made in the Philippines are

about veneration. By and large, official soundtracks from movies and TV game

plan are the ones that are commonly notable.

Filipino pop songs mainly referred to songs popularized since the 1960s,

especially those in the ballad form which is a tune that recounts a story, and it

tends to be emotional, clever, or sentimental. Discovering these types of a short

simple songs in an assortment of melodic styles such as ballad, by major

commercial artists like Pilita Corrales, Nora Aunor, Basil Valdez, Freddie

Aguilar and Rey Valera.

Appreciating everything, particularly to the Filipinos and to the other people who

know the Filipino language that goes into OPM rock and roll music can be very

good for a person’s moods and emotions. OPM Rock music can have a different

effect on different people. Anything from making a person happy, sad, mad,

annoyed, or pumped up can arise from a rock and roll jam. That is why OPM
rock music is important for people who want to get away from everything and get

rid of all worries.

Music and society have always been intimately related. Music holds a strong,

essential, and definitive role in reflecting and shaping the culture of every society,

every country. It unifies groups of people and moves them to common action and

helps them express common emotions. Some songs become anthems for

particular generations, as Eraserhead’s Ligaya became for many in the 1990’s. In

times of national crisis, songs seem especially appropriate, such as ASIN’s

“Masdan Mo ang Kapaligiran” or Francis M.’s “Tayo’y mga Pinoy”. Gives a warm

feeling about self and the environment, the songs being mentioned above gives a

motivation and awareness towards reality.

Music imparts comprehensively shared characteristics, experiences and

sentiments, that describes a get-together's identity and solidarity. It similarly fills

in as a get-together for open discourse about propensities, morals, legislative

issues, methodologies, and social change. Performers and groups of onlookers

are social on-screen characters. While they mirror their general surroundings,

they likewise translate and transform it. Some are most important for disclosing

to us what concerned individuals, how they saw issues, and how they

communicated their expectations, standards, outrage, and disappointments. It

encourages correspondence which goes amazing, empowers implications to be

shared, and advances the improvement and support of individual, gathering,

social, and national personalities.

Also in the 90s, bands like the APO Hiking Society, Eraserheads, and Rivermaya

found haven and developed a fan group following with their appealing and

generally widely-accepted lyricism and their experimental, sometimes upbeat,

sometimes melancholic, stadium rock tunes.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The study was conducted by the researcher and used the quantitative research

approach to gather information. This part demonstrates the procedure and the

materials being utilized and strategies to lead the examination. The exploration

was made conceivable, by utilizing overview poll to random students. The

exploration was likewise one of the handling and gathering information by the

assistance of the web. This review has a total of 10 arbitrary respondents of

individuals with sensitivities around Calamba.

Research Instrument

Survey questionnaire for data gathering was used by the researcher to

know the percentage and to achieve the main objective of the research. A

questionnaire was distributed to the selected people in Calamba by the use of

technologies and the social media made the survey and collection of data

possible in a matter of time. The use of the internet in conducting the survey

helped the researcher collected the data easier.
