A DAYDREAM FOR AFRICA
« Africa does not tell its spatial aspirations, but contains it like the lines of a
hand, written in the colours of the earth,...»

Afrika seems to be a continent of diversity and contrast which drifts apart,

both literally and figuratively. Its inspiring and postive qualities are often
overschadowed by conflicts but are nonetheless manifold. Is it possible
to bridge the contrast whilst connecting the uniqueness of the various
cultures?Wouldn’t it be powerful to reach this united Africa?

Why doesn’t it exist yet as we have the United nations, a European union and
the United States? Of course this is mainly a matter of politics, but there are
more ways to achieve this dream. A potential way towards brotherhood is by
creating connected (public) spaces. These spaces become the goldprints of
Africa.

GOLDPRINTS OF AFRICA
A sequence of open spaces spread throughout the continent. You encounter
them in current cities, villages and landscapes. A crucial condition is that
these are peaceful grounds.

The typology of these open spaces is the square, like a room, an urban
room or a room in the landscape. We see the squares as gold prints which
are connected. This connection is a passageway, a route, that can grow
organically and on occasion is part of an existing rail track, river or highway.
The most impassable regions become accessible to travel through. In these
Oasis African-ness can well up.

Positive achievements and creations in one oasis reaches the other oasis and
so on. Spheres of influence expand.

UJAMAA* GROUNDS
The programming of these goldprint-squares is based on provincial, national
and continental scale. The everyday life, fertile encounters, trade and
festivities alternate with a travelling programme. This programme can consist
of:

- A market of the finest of local craft arrives on the squares.

- Educational lectures and story telling
- An augmented art & technology festival to explore alternative realities.
- A stage for dance and expression of worship and rituals
- A space for slow food; Eat and cultivate together

Four scenario’s of the goldprints are illustrated in the form of a collage:

‘Cultivate & Enjoy’, ‘Wait & Trade’, ‘Collect & Craft’, ‘Rinse & Refresh’.

The sensory and spatial aspects of the squares differ as people make creative
use of them. This changes so often that a relatively small surface offers as
many variations as a trip around the world.

HANDMADE & EXCHANGE

The intelligence of the hand and craftsmanship inspired us to illustrate A
DAYDREAM FOR AFRICA with handmade work. The goldprints are all
about spaces of exchange. This project uses an audio installation: headphones
with a voice whispering personal daydreams. And a voice recorder in which
visitors are invited to leave their personal daydream of Africa behind.

*UJAMAA: ‘we work together and help eachother’ (without colonialism or

neo-colonial exploitation).
Gradualy a network of the goldprint spaces will expand with connecting passages.
The drawings are slightly larger than Athree size and exist of three layers of transparant paper.
New goldprint squares emerge, existing connections are being strengthened and new passages arise.

Rinse & Refresh scenario. Each goldprint square has a monumental golden-like mast and contains the local and
travelling programme. A water well attracts a fountain and the use of water to rinse and refresh.
