But he spends his free time doing something different. Devon is in a dance group known as Batoto Yetu. That, means “our children” in the African language of ‘Swahili (swa-HE-lee). The group teaches Devon about African dance. They perform to the beat of a drum. ‘They wear the headpieces of African warriors! Devon is like any other ten-year-old. He and the other students have many similar interests. He likes to play sports. He likes to hang out with his friends. At school, he takes classes. He especially likes his class in African history. All the dancers must keep up their grades in order to stay in the group. Devon and the dancers in his group wear traditional costumes when they are performing. ‘The costumes are intended to show which part of Africa the dancers are from. A headpiece is part of the costume. Devon's headpiece is made of feathers and beads. His skirt and leg costumes are made of straw. Devon is proud of being a part of Batoto Yetu. “I'm doing something good,” he says. Besides learning about Africa, he is also helping his community.
