Acronal 5442 is an aqueous, self-cross-
linking dispersion of a copolymer of an
acrylic ester and styrene. Acronal 5442
is a non-APEO, non-formaldehyde, and
non-ammonia product.
The composition of Acronal 5442
further conforms to the requirements
of BfR recommendation XIV (as at
01.03.2011) and complies with the
positive list in Appendix A.2 of DVGW-
Worksheet W 347 on cementitious
materials in drinking water applica-
tions. The raw materials used to
manufacture Acronal 5442 are listed
in Commission Regulation (EU)
No. 10/2011 of 14 January 2011.
Acronal 5442 is mainly used to manu-
facture cement-based, flexible water-
proofing membranes being applied
in- and outdoor beneath tiles with
excellent crack-bridging properties,
even at low temperatures down to
– 20 °C and very good adhesion in
combination with tiles and slabs.
Acronal 5442 based mineral sealing
slurries are also recommended for
concrete protection and waterproofing
of building structures (basement
protection). The polymer film only
crosslinks in the alkaline pH range.
No unpleasant ammonia odor is
released when Acronal 5442 is pro-
cessed in combination with strongly
alkaline mineral binders such as
cement and lime, etc. In order to
ensure that mineral sealing com-
pounds are able to effectively bridge
cracks, the ratio of polymer to cement
should be at least 0.8 : 1. We recom-
mend adding either Rheovis® HS 1169
to the liquid component of the mixture
or Rheovis® HS 1980 to the solid com-
ponent as rheology additives in order
to obtain the correct consistency for
processing.
