To all HS and 8th Grade Band parent(s),

I just posted information on Google Classroom for the HS Band and the 8th Grade Band about our online
classes and Zoom meetings for the remainder of the semester. I also sent all band students an e-mail with
the same information. Here is what I sent--please note that HS Band info is at the top and the 8th Grade
Band info is a little lower on the page. Please let me know if you have any questions:

High School Band

The Schedule:
There are TWO scheduled Zoom meetings each week. The first one will be used to go over new
stuff and will be required--if you can’t attend, you should watch the recorded video by the end of
the day. The second one is there for you to log in if you need help with assignments. I will also
use it to introduce some optional enrichment activities.

The Zoom meetings* are:

Tuesdays- 8:45 - 9:15 a.m. (required*) https://zoom.us/j/578341285?pwd=
eTh2QldGRDFjUmtrYjU1eWU2TW83Zz09
Thursdays- 8:45 - 9:15 a.m. (optional)
https://zoom.us/j/622388506?pwd=NytISjhVMi9JK1BiM21hanhRNjdnQT09

I. What you will be expected to play:

You will be expected to play, record, and upload (on Google Classroom) two scales and one 8-12
measure excerpt that you will choose from among several different options that I will post this
week.

The concert pitch scales are:

9th Grade- F & Ab 10th Grade- C & Db11th Grade- G & D 12th Grade- A & E
*Play one octave up and down…
I will post all the scales and 8-12 measure excerpts this week.

II. Terms & Symbols:

Every band student should have an understanding of basic music theory ideas, terms, and
symbols.
Each week (starting next week) there will be a very short 5-10 item Google Quiz just to make
sure you know the essentials. I will post all of the terms and symbols you will need to know by the
second Zoom session this week.

III. Music “Styles”

Every band student should be able to know certain things about music from other time periods.
Some of the basics are--
1. The names of the musical time periods and when they occured.
2. General characteristics of music from that time period.
3. New musical developments/ instruments of the time.
4. Major composers and the pieces they are known for.

Remember that we were digging into the Romantic period this semester. I will go over these
things during the first Zoom meeting of each week.

IV. Optional Thursdays:

On Thursdays, I will also present some optional musical enrichment activities to do while we are
all stuck at home. If you have some ideas, let’s talk about them on Tuesday!

There are other times through the course of the day when you can reach me to get help, go over
things you don’t understand, or set up an online lesson.

Office Hours
The office hours are times when I will be available online to help. We can communicate by e-
mail, phone, chat, or Zoom.

Afternoon Help Appointments

If you need more individual help, 15 minute appointments can be made for Tues. & Thurs.
afternoons. Arrangements for an appointment must be made before noon of the day you wish to
meet. Just e-mail me to set up a time.

*A note about the Zoom meetings--

At first when you log in:
-Your microphone will be muted. This will be to prevent feedback and latency issues.
-Private chat will be turned off.
-The meeting will be recorded and saved. This will be so that if you can’t make the meeting or
you have connectivity issues, you can watch it later.

Book 3 tunes that were on the playing test list for the year. I know you don’t have the books. I will
go over how this will work when we meet tomorrow.

The concert pitch scales are:

Concert D (if you didn’t play it before we left for spring break)
Concert Gb
Concert A
Chromatic scale (low concert F to high concert F- 2 octaves)

The Book 3 tunes are:

#111- if you didn’t get it done before break
#99
#131- this is an introduction to swing style (which you already know from playing Aladdin)
#181- this is an intro to jazz improvisation; really pretty easy, but we’ll go over it together
