AME 352, HW-10

Take advantage of the 2-force and 3-force member concept to solve the following problems. Do not
consider gravity in your analysis. Draw free-body diagrams if necessary. Avoid writing too many
equations.

10-1 The system shown is used as a nutcracker (the nut is depicted as object D). If a force of F = 1.0 N is
applied vertically on the handle as shown, what force is generated to crack the nut? If the force on
the handle is increased to 2.0 N, what force is applied on the nut?

10-2 The garage-type automobile jack shown is actuated by hydraulic pressure in the cylinder BC. Links
(2), (3) and (4) have negligible weights. The weight of links (1) is 200 N and its mass center is at G.
The jack is supporting a load, L, of 1,000 N. Assume negligible friction.
(a) Construct free-body diagram for each link.
(b) Determine the force exerted by the actuator BC that keeps the system in static equilibrium
(magnitude and direction).
(c) Determine the forces that the ground applies on link 1 at E and F (magnitudes and directions).

LO2O4 = LO2 A = LAB = 0.4 , LO4 B = 0.6 , LBC = 1.2 m
A spring is connected between the ground at Q and the center of the slider block at C. The spring has
an undeformed length of 0.8 m and a stiffness k = 1,000 N/m. Static friction exists between the slider
block and the ground with a static coefficient of friction μ = 0.4. In the shown configuration, the
angle of link O4 B with the horizontal axis is 30° and the deformed length of the spring is 0.6 m.
Determine the range of values of an applied torque on link 2 in order to keep the system in static
equilibrium.

10-4 Several known forces and torques act on this four-bar mechanism in the directions shown:
FB = 10 N, FC = 20 N, T3 = 35 Nm CCW, T4 = 25 Nm CW
In the configuration shown θ 2 = 65° . An unknown torque acts on link (2), which keeps the system
in static equilibrium. The link lengths are provided as
L1( x ) = 4.0, L1( y) = 1.0, L2 = 2.0, L3 = 3.0, L4 = 1.5, LAC = 1.8 m; β 3 = 33.7°

(a) Apply the FBD method to find the unknown torque Tx .

(b) Apply the Power Formula to find the unknown torque Tx . You must be very clear how you
determine each term in this formula. All the terms must be identified and computed separately
before plugging them into the formula. Note: FB can be applied at B either on link 3 or on link
4.
