The Never- Ending Struggle For Freedom

Immigrants in America are being relentlessly attacked from two sides; they must defy all

odds and regulations to get across the border only to be met with hate and hostility once they

arrive.

From the beginning Trump made it a priority to slash the rights of immigrants and force

anyone different out. We’ve heard from day one about this infamous wall of his. This one issue has

been debated continuously to the point that it caused the longest government shutdown in our

history; however, by only focusing on the wall we are allowing Trump to act as a magician using

misdirection to pass other policies depriving desperate people of their innate right to freedom.

Stephen Miller made it his top priority to keep America clean of any diversity or color. He’s

been instrumental in many negative policies towards immigrants and immigration into the United

States including: banning travelers from seven countries, encouraging companies to only hire

Americans, destroying programs helping people legally obtain citizenship, delaying and denying

visas, trying to ban Chinese students from American universities, and more (Zakaria). Policies such

as these are often being put in place without major media coverage or public recognition. The

longer that these policies go unchecked and continue to get passed the farther we will dig ourselves

in a pit of discrimination and injustice.

Immigrants have already experienced so much trauma they decided to leave their home,

their friends, and their culture for a chance at happiness and safety. Then they are met with

regulations and policies designed to keep them out at all costs, Despite this, some are lucky enough

to enter the land of the free, but they still haven’t truly gained their right to freedom.

The constant flooding of harmful and incorrect messages into American minds about

immigrants have caused a clear separation between us and them. We are horrified that anyone with

different skin will steal our children or bring drugs into our communities, This fear leaves the

immigrants with the burden of proof. Everyday they have to show us they aren’t evil; they are just

normal people trying to live their lives. They are persecuted and discriminated against daily and

they accept it as part of their freedom (Rose).

What right do we have to cause such pain in these people's lives? Our legislatures families

immigrated here, why should that right suddenly be taken away? Why must we fear difference in

society or allow ourselves to buy into these inaccurate and devastating stereotypes? Society can’t

go on living in a state of fear of the others. We must accept each other as humans on one Earth in

order to ever truly attain liberty and justice for all.
