WPLP Elementary School Cultural


Development Plan

At WPLP Elementary School we provide an inclusive and equitable environment for

diverse learners to engage in purposeful learning for global citizenship. We strive to empower

our students, staff and stakeholders to reach their greatest potential through authentic

relationships, rigorous instruction and integrity. To achieve our vision successfully, we will

implement the following plan to maintain a healthy culture that is conducive to student success.

Tenant of Culture Time Action Steps


Demography and Summer Survey will be given to the stakeholders of WPLP Elementary with the following questions:
History • How long have you known WPLPE?
• What did you know them for in the beginning of time?
• How was it different? In what aspects did it remain the same?
• What makes WPLPE unlike any other school?

Time will be reserved for staff to explore the findings of the school and collectively determine which traditions and
elements they prefer to maintain and which to discard.
Collaboration On-going Space for collaboration will be provided in the schedule. Teachers will have protected time for grade level PLC
meetings, Vertical PLC meetings and Student Circles.
• PLC Meeting Professional Development Learning Targets: Teachers will determine meeting norms for their PLC,
understand what a most effective meeting entails, and identify their supportive staff for future meetings.

Space in the classroom must be dedicated to student collaboration.


• Classroom Gallery Walk Learning Targets: Teachers will understand how to improve the collaborative environment
in their classroom.

Mental Space will be reserved for collaboration


• Self -Awareness Professional Development Learning Targets: Teachers will identify their personality type, work
styles, and habits to maintain an ongoing, healthy, work relationship with colleagues. Teachers will also engage in a
Mindset book study to guide them in the thought work necessary to improve.

Empowerment On-going Teachers will lead the professional development with an EdCamp format.
When writing their Personal Development Plans, teachers will only create one goal. In the place of goal number
two, teachers will determine their personal “Activator.” An activator is a study that will inform their goal, improve

their work, and provide professional development leadership opportunities. The personal study may be
accomplished through workshops, conferences, professional development, book studies, and research.
Shared Vision Summer/ The entire school community will be invited to help write the vision through surveys and interviews. The leadership

Conflict Resolution Ongoing We will use:


• The Positivity Project
• Restorative Justice-student circles will be used for re-entry after behavior referrals. In the classroom, student circles
will be held at the end of the day to conclude and solve any lingering problems.
• Teachers will be expected to use a 4-to-1, praise-to-correction ratio. This means, a teacher should have 4 times as
many positive comments to make to the students than negative.

Diversity Consideration Ongoing The diversity and equity teams will collaborate to create a survey for families to tell about their cultures. Once the
information is gathered, the team will work with staff to update school events and assembly presentations in order
to acknowledge and celebrate cultures where applicable.
Collaborative Ongoing Leadership meetings, School Improvement Team Meetings must follow protocols that require the teams to inform
Decision-Making the stakeholders of any decisions being considered, opportunity to vote, and delivery methods for buy in.
Systematic Ongoing Staff will be trained and expected to use
Communication • Google- used for all in-house communication and collaboration through shared documents, surveys, and presentations
• Twitter- all teachers are required to upload 1 tweet a week. The tweet may be student created in the upper grades but
always loaded by the teacher.
• Basic Newsletters, phone calls, and principal messages will be sent out weekly.

Online Communication Professional Development Learning Targets: Teachers will understand expectations and
protocols regarding communication systems. Teachers will be proficient in accessing and using Google and Twitter
for communication purposes.
