1. Description
Our Heaters are primarily installed for the purpose of heating fuel oil and lubricating oil,
diesel oil, water system built as tubular heat exchanger.
Heater basically consists of a carbon steel pipe shell, channel cover which is steel fabricated.
Carbon steel tubes are generally used as tube material and carbon steel plates are used for sheet
material in commercial vessel.
The construction of shell & U-tube type Heater is as bellows.
(1) Shell & Shell head : The shell has the shell head of steel fabrication.
(2) Tube bundle & baffle plate : As the shell side fluid to ward heat pipe can be flowed most
validly, the thermal efficiency of heat exchanger is become higher.
(3) Insulation : shell and channel cover in glass wool insulated with galvanizes steel sheet.
2. Installation.
The removal space for U-tube bundle and channel cover should considered according to the
out line drawing.
The foundation must have high rigidity in view of loading condition and external force
and be as strong as not to receive any alteration due to aged deterioration
3. Operation
(1) Before start-up it is important to make sure that all connections are securely tightened.
(2) The relief(safety) valve must be adjusted to maximum design pressure or low.
(3) Oil(water) inlet and outlet valve should be open.
(4) Operate the oil pump : Alter confirming the pump discharge press, Is proper, fully open the
oil pump discharge valve gradually.
(5) Open the air vent valve of confirm oil comes out.
(6) Operate the oil pump with checking the steam control calve and oil viscosity controller,
oil filter purifier.
Starting Up
- Oil(water) pump start.
- Pressure pulsation and vibration check oil side.
- Leakage check during oil(water) side start up.
- Ventilate oil(water).
- Ventilation and drain on the steam, condensate side.(shipyard installation line)
- Open slowly steam valve.
- Pressure rise and change of temperature check.
- Leakage check curing running steam, condensate side.
- when slight steam can be over serve on the ventilation.
close ventilation on the steam side shipyard installation line)
a. Fluid flow through the heat exchanger must be established before the heating medium is
applied.
b. Operate the heater for one hour stop and retighten all screws.
c. The output of the heater is subject to the supply of dry saturated steam at the inlet steam
valve. The steam pressure applied to be as basis heater size calculation.
Shut-down
- Close steam valve.
- Oil(water) recirculate for about 30 minutes after shutdown.
- Oil(water) Pump shut-down.
- Open ventilation (shipyard's connecting pipes.)
- Open drain valve.
a. In stopping operation, take the step reverse to starting of operation, that means, stop
steam flow before stopping the flow of heater oil(water).
Heated oil is to be flowed for about 30 minutes after shutdown steam.
In order to completely cool down the heater.
b. Corrosion occurrences in shut down periods are mainly caused by oxygen.
The corrosion occurs if non-distilled or alkaline water remains in the heat exchanger.
However, even when fully emptied, heaters are exposed to corrosion,
caused by water residues or condition.
Hence, heaters out of service should be protected against corrosion.
Maintenance check is to carried out with care paying keen attention on the following.
(1) The heater should be clean₩ed regularly every six months by removing the tube insert or at
any tome there is a decrease in output not related to other causes.
(2) If heating tube should break or when it is necessary to check for leakages of water from
loosen expanded area the following procedures are recommended.
a. Cleaning of the tube system from the outside is carried out after removing the tube insert
using a sharp liquid jet (citric acid water).
b. Cleaning of the tube system from the inside is carried out after removing the cover by
flushing the tube with e.g. citric acid.
c. after cleaning has been completed the heater must be flushed carefully with fresh water and
allowed to dry afterwards.
(4) Once every year the safety valve must be checked for correct set point.
In this heater it is important to pay attention to the following items for maintenance and inspection
of each part during the operation.
Temperature or pressure Record heating steam pressure at inlet regularly and pay attention to the
of heating steam relation to heated temperature.
Air venting of shell Open the air vent valve a little and check if air stays in the shell

Oil heater can exhibit satisfactory performance if properly handled and maintained.
Should trouble occur speedy remedies must be taken.
