Following are the steps that are to be followed in performing CRAFT method using
Software;

 Step 1. (Installation):
 Open internet explorer and Go to www.google.com.
 Search crafts layout excel add in
 Open the first link and the page will appear where we can install the add in
Figure 1 Searching CRAFT on internet

 Click on the facility layout and it will download

Figure 2 Download add in Window

 Then open the MS Excel 2016 and go to Excel options.

 Select the facility layout add in and select go.
 An option of Add in will appear on the toolbar where we can use the solver.

 Step 2 (Creating Layout):
To create a new layout, select the New Layout Option from the Facility Layout menu. The dialog
box Provide the Name of the project, the number of departments, number of fixed points and the
distance measure. When the Make Random Problem box is checked, random interdepartmental
flows are provided.

Figure 4 Layout data info Window

The flow data is placed below the department data. This matrix is commonly called the From-
To Matrix. A cell (i, j) holds the flow from department i to department j. The example flows
were randomly generated by the program

Figure 5 Flow matrix Window of CRAFT software

Below the flow data, a matrix is provided to hold the material handling costs between
departments. The default entries are 1 to indicate that all interdepartmental flows have the
same cost, but these numbers can be changed to reflect different handling equipment, lot
sizes and other factors

 Step 3 (Define Facility):

 The “Define Facility” red button on the Layout Data worksheet presents the dialog box
shown below with which the various solution options are selected

Figure 7 Facility button window

 We use the Optimum Sequence method. Here we define the solution method as a sequential
method and deciding the width and length as well as depth of the cells as provided by the
case problem.
 The length and width of the plant and the aisle width are set in the fields at the bottom, where
length is 20 and width is 20.
 When the Sequential button is selected for the initial solution, a layout is automatically
generated with the departments listed in numerical order.

 Step 4 (Optimum Sequence):

The optimum sequence method of solution starts with an arbitrary initial sequential solution and
tries to improve the layout by switching two departments in the sequence. At each step, the
method computes the cost changes for all possible switches of two departments and chooses the
most effective pair. The two departments are switched in the sequence and the method repeats

 Go to solution option

 Select OK

Figure 9 Initial Layout

 Restart the process with the initial sequence and chose the Do Not Stop option. This will
give the final solution after a sequence of switches.

Figure 10 Final layout after iterations

 To the right of the layout appears a summary of the switches made during the process
Figure 11 Layout summary

 Clicking the Show Flows button shows the flow lines between departmental centroids. The
thickness of a line shows the relative magnitude of the flow-cost between two of the
departments. Four different thickness are used with a thin line indicating a relative small
flow-cost between two departments and a thick line indicating a large flow-cost

Figure 12 Sequential Layout

 The sequential layout can be easily automatically generated. The sequential layout method
quickly finds good layouts for alternative facility designs.
4. Discussion:
What is CRAFT abbreviation stands for?

CRAFT stands for (computerized relative allocation of facilities technique) was one of the
first computer-aided layout routines developed. CRAFT is an improvement routine and
requires the user to specify an initial layout. The objective used in CRAFT is to minimize the
total transportation cost of a layout, where transportation cost is defined as the product of the
cost to move a unit load from department i to department j and the distance between
departments i and j.

What are the two types of Layout Improvement methods?

There are two methods for layout improvement.

 Re-routing of material flow
 Re-layout
The first is the re-routing of material flow in a given facility that can improve the efficiency of
material movement. When re-routing is not efficient, the other more drastic way is the re-layout.
In most of cases the re-layout requires more time, effort and is more expensive.

What type of Layout improvement method is associated with CRAFT software?

Now a day’s computer programs are used to assist the layout planner in generating alternate
layout. A computerized layout algorithm (improvement type) i.e. 'CRAFT' (Computerized
Relative Allocation of Facilities Technique) technique is presented for improving existing
layout. This clearly represents that CRAFT is used for re layout purpose.

Comparison with Opt. sequence method:

When we compare the results of Opt. sequence method with traditional method we get same
results in both methods either we perform it through rectilinear or Euclidean method when we
sequential option in initial solution. But difference in results occur only when we leave blank as
an initial solution in traditional method because sequence is generated by our input that results in
may or may not error creation.in that case traditional method provide better results than Opt.
sequence method.
Opt. sequence method Traditional method
Initial cost 425.5 392
Final cost 376.3 359

Conclusion:

From this lab we learn that how to organize a facility in the best layout using CRAFTS method
(Sequential and traditional method). We prefer traditional method for it. This is used for
improving existing layout by keeping the cost factor same for all variables and different variable
values in distance matrix. We may also can take initial layout of form to chart as input for this
method. We perform it by swapping two or more departments to help arrange the facility to
optimal floor plan.
Comments:

As CRAFT layout is used for batch production facility and it consider to swap only adjacent
department pair or pair that have same area which are the limitation for our present scenario. But
it saves both the time and money as it is a computerized method (providing room for defining
variables and constraints) and provide results near to optimal solution because of its flexibility as
it has 6 bottoms that are utilized to get series of different end solutions.
