REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft protection mode.
Obtain radio anti-theft protection code from owner prior to servicing
vehicle.

A6

Removal

1. Obtain radio code from vehicle owner. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover. Remove
air cleaner assembly, noise dampener and air ducts. Disconnect EVAP connector, Mass Air Flow (MAF)
sensor and both front oxygen sensors from exhaust pipes. On vehicles with 2 piece ATF filler tube,
remove top half and plug lower tube with cloth.
2. Remove engine to transmission mounting bolts from on top of bellhousing. Remove upper nuts from front
exhaust pipes. Using engine support bridge, take weight off engine mounts and support engine. Raise
vehicle and remove front wheels. Remove engine undercover.
3. Remove 2 retaining bolts from torque support and remove inner axle boot heat shields. Disconnect axle
shafts from transaxle. Disconnect engine RPM sensor and VSS connectors from left front of transaxle.
Disconnect Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector. On 6-cylinder models, remove complete exhaust
system. On 5-cylinder models, remove crossmember below exhaust system before removing complete
exhaust system.
4. Unclip generator vent hose. Disconnect hoses from transaxle cooler lines and plug openings. Remove
starter assembly. On 6-cylinder models, remove ribbed belt and loosen generator. Remove torque
converter-to-drive plate nuts from starter opening.
5. On AWD vehicles, remove heat shields. Disconnect front axles and tie out of the way. Remove drive
shaft. Remove 2 bolts retaining selector lever cable bracket. On all vehicles, place transmission jack in

position and secure transaxle to jack. Remove right transaxle support bracket and mount as an assembly.
Remove left transaxle mount.
6. Mark selector lever bracket for reassembly reference and remove bracket. Disconnect selector lever cable
from selector lever. Remove lower bellhousing bolts. Press transaxle off engine and torque converter off
flexplate. Remove transaxle from vehicle.

Installation

Install torque converter until fully seated on transaxle. Always tighten torque converter bolts by hand first then
tighten to correct specification. Tighten bellhousing bolts to specification. See BELLHOUSING BOLT
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS (A6) table. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.

Removal

1. Obtain radio code from vehicle owner. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect vehicle speed
sensor harness connector at transaxle. Remove air intake duct and noise insulation shield.
2. Remove upper filler pipe. Remove upper engine-to-transaxle bolts. Remove lower engine cover and
mounting brackets. Using Engine Supports (10-222/A and 10-222A/1), support engine from above.
3. Raise vehicle and remove drive shaft heat shields. Remove crossmember below catalytic converters.
Remove exhaust pipes with catalytic converters attached. Disconnect axle shafts from transaxle. Wire
axle shafts aside. Remove starter. Remove torque converter-to-drive plate nuts. See Fig. 2 .
4. Remove heat shield from transaxle range switch. Unhook transaxle cable holders. See Fig. 3 . Disconnect
electrical connectors. Remove selector lever cable holder and selector lever cable at transaxle lever.
Detach lower accelerator cable from transaxle. Disconnect hoses from transaxle cooler lines and plug
openings. See Fig. 4 .
5. Support transaxle using jack, and raise transaxle slightly. Remove lower transaxle mounting bolts and
rear subframe bolts. Separate transaxle from engine. Secure torque converter to transaxle to prevent
converter from falling out of transaxle. Lower transaxle from vehicle.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure torque converter is fully seated on transaxle. Use NEW bolts and
lock washers to secure torque converter. Adjust accelerator and shift cables. See TRANSMISSION
SERVICING article. Ensure radio is coded correctly (if necessary).
