QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

1. How long is Paul’s introduction with the thesis statement? Does he state the points
of comparison and contrast in the thesis?
Paul’s introduction is ten (10) lines long. He stated the points of comparison and contrast
in the thesis. ‘While sharing these similarities, conservative and liberal viewpoints differ
on their basis of belief, tax policies, welfare policies, and the role of the government
(paragraph 1 lines 9-10).’

2. Paul uses numerous examples to illustrate the points he is making. What are some of
the examples and why are such examples and why are such examples essential in the
essay?
 BASIS OF BELIEF – ‘Conservatives believe that wealth comes as a result of
hardwork and ingenuity, in an atmosphere of individualism and freedom.
Conservatism is based on hope and a belief that anyone can be successful
(paragraph 3)
 TAX POLICY – ‘Liberals believe that all tax money belongs to the government
(paragraph 4).’
‘Contrary to this, conservatives believe that money, and the wealth it represents,
belongs to the individuals who earn it (paragraph 5).’
 WELFARE POLICY – ‘Liberals believe that the transfer of money from one
citizen to the other is justified in the Constitution’s “general welfare” statement.
Liberal’s are willing to use other people’s money (in the form of taxes) freely,
through social hand out programs, to gain favor with dependent people (paragraph
6).’
These examples are essential to the essay because they help to clearly differentiate
between the Liberals and the Conservatives based on the comparison and contrast
points stated in the outline and the thesis.

3. What organization pattern(s) does Paul use? How effective is the use of this pattern?
Paul uses the alternating/point-to-point pattern in his essay. This pattern was very
effective as because it helped in the comparison and contrasting of the Liberals and
conservatives, and helped the reader to clearly view the similarities and differences
between the two.

4. What similarities between conservatives and liberal viewpoints does Paul indicate?
 ‘Both conservatives and liberals care for the nation and its people (paragraph1).’
 ‘Both beliefs are diverging, moving towards their respective extremities at this
time in our history (paragraph 1).’
5. What differences between the two viewpoints does Paul indicate?
Paul indicates the differences between the liberal and conservative viewpoints based on
the comparison and contrast points he stated in his outline and thesis. These included the
differences based on basis of beliefs, tax policy, welfare fare policy, and the role of the
government.
Paul stated that:
 BASIS OF BELIEF - ‘Liberalism is based on emotion, and conservatism is
based on reason (paragraph 2).’
 TAX POLICY – ‘Liberals believe that all money belongs to the government
(paragraph 4).’ ‘Contrary to this, conservatives believe that money, and the wealth
it represents, belongs to the individuals who earn it (paragraph 5).’
 WELFARE POLICY – ‘Liberals count the success of welfare programs by how
many people are on welfare and are dependent on them (paragraph 6).’ ‘In
contrast, conservatives count the success of welfare programs by how many
people can get out of the program and become independent (paragraph 7).’
 THE ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT – ‘Liberals want a large government
with much dependence on them (paragraph 8).’ ‘Conservatives, however, want
smaller government with less dependence that is limited to Constitutional
restrictions (paragraph 9).’

6. Does Paul include the points of comparison and contrast in the conclusion of the
essay?
Paul includes the points of comparison and contrast in the conclusion of the essay.
‘Conservatism and liberalism differ greatly on their basis if beliefs, tax policy, welfare
policy, and the role of government (paragraph 11).’
