Prostitutes and Prostitution: A Case Study of Sex Workers in Balibago, Angeles City,

MARANATHA CHRISTIAN ACADEMY OF DAU

This research study depicts the lives of the prostitutes as well as it uncovers the

prostitution happening in the Philippines. The trends and issues of this matter has

greatly influenced the research to conduct this study. Furthermore, the researchers

came up with this topic because they find it very interesting and also to gain an

additional knowledge about it.

Prostituted women are always misjudge as indiscriminate, immoral and prurient .But

behind this lies a broken soul, consist by physical, emotional, and psychological abuse,

worst of all affected poverty. What they need is someone who will listen and understand

behind all the struggles they are facing with

There is a selfish reason why we non-prostitute women need to understand the

experience of women in prostitution: because our worst nightmares are their daily

experiences , and because they understand so clearly what misogyny in action feels like

and looks like.

We live in the world in which we can make thousands of dollars in a handful of hours

but choosing to be a sex worker is not being wise at all.

Prostitutes and Prostitution: A Case Study of Sex Workers in Balibago, Angeles City,

MARANATHA CHRISTIAN ACADEMY OF DAU

Prostitution is defined as the industry in which person provides sexual service to others

in exchange for money. Goodlin (2009).

Many prefer to use other terms to discuss includes who work in the industry, including

commercial sex workers, whores, call girls, etc.

For this paper, the researches will use the term “prostitute” a term that is

distinguishable from “sex worker” because sex work is a broad category that might

include those employed in phone sex, pornography stripping and pole dancing. Hope

(2007)

A life of a Prostitute is not that easy. They often got criticized for being one without

even knowing the reason behind.

And they know for themselves that choosing to be a sex worker is like living in shame,

they can feel ostracized, alone, loathed, unwanted and disposable. Prostitutes are even

in a high risk of getting physically violated by their escorts.

Apart from that, the nature of their activities leaves them vulnerable to many different

types of harm, including physical assault, rape, psychological abuse and exploitation and 2
might even get a different kinds of diseases like Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)

Prostitutes and Prostitution: A Case Study of Sex Workers in Balibago, Angeles City,

and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that may even lead them to death. As a

matter of fact prostitute did not choose prostitution but rather choose survival. Nobody

will make a choice for being a prostitute.Sex workers choose it for having no choice.

There is a long history of sex work and prostitution in the Philippines that goes as far

back at the 1500s. A prosperous slave trade that was establish in the late 1500s

between the Philippines, Spain, and the Caribbean. During WWII the Japanese Imperial

Army forced women to serve as “comfort girls” to the Japanese soldier stationed in the

Philippines. Smith (2018)

Global prostitution maybe bigger industry than you think. There are estimated 40 to 42

million prostitute in the world. Three quarters of them are between the ages of 13 and

25, and 80% of them are female.Poverty, unemployment, lack of skills and education

force many women into prostitution.

In the Philippines there are 500,000 to 800,000 men, women and children are working

in the sex trade business. In 1947, Filipino President Roxas signed a military agreement
3
resulting in 22 US military bases being stationed on the Philippines. Smith (2018)

becoming the “mecca of the sex trade”, often refer as Sin City. Smith (2018)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Prostitution

“Prostitution, the sale of sexual services, usually a specific sexual performance for a

specified fee. Prostitution may be practice by males or females, and customers may be

either males or females , but most common pattern is female prostitutes with male

clients. It is often called “the oldest profession”. Prostitution has a religious, economic,

and social dimensions.” Bullough, B. L., & Bullough, V. L. (1996). Collier's

Encyclopedia.

Prostitution is the act offering indiscriminate sexual intercourse usually in exchange of

money. Both males and females can perform it. The customer can be a male or female.

But historically, most prostitutes have been women and most clients are man. It is

referred as the “world’s older profession”. A person who work in this matter is called

Prostitute.

“Researchers have tried to determine the factors that lead women into prostitution.

Early childhood sexual abuse, running away from home, substance use, and racial and

ethnic influences are common variables examined in the current research.” (Raphael

and Shapiro, 2002)

“There’s an analysis that drives women to become a prostitute not only poverty, these

factors may include early childhood molestation, fleeing from home, drug abuse and
5
ethnological influences are common likely considered in the contemporary research.”

Risks of Prostitution

“The risks for experiencing physical violence in prostitution are very high. An

occupational survey noted that 99% of women in prostitution were victims of violence,

with more frequent injuries “than workers in [those] occupations considered ... most

dangerous, like mining, forestry and fire fighting”. (Gibbs, Sydie, and Krull 2000, 47)

The dangers for encountering physical brutality in prostitution are high. A word related

review noticed that 99% of ladies in prostitution were casualties of viciousness, with

increase of injuries than people that works in most hazardous, such as mining, ranger

service and putting out fires.

“These included stabbings and beatings, concussions and broken bones (broken jaws,

ribs, collarbones, fingers, spinal injuries, and a fractured skull), cuts, and black eyes.

Fifty percent of these women had head injuries resulting from violent assaults with, for

example, baseball bats and crowbars. Many had their heads slammed against walls and

against car dashboards.

Sex buyers and pimps regularly subjected them to extreme violence when they refused

to perform a specific sex act.” (Farley et al. 2005)

These included stabbings and beatings, blackouts and broken bones (broken jaws,

50% of these ladies had head wounds coming about because of fierce ambushes with,

for instance, polished ash and crowbars. Many had their heads hammered against

dividers and against vehicle dashboards. Sex buyers and pimps normally exposed them

to extraordinary viciousness when they cannot to play out an explicit sex act.

Prostitutes Right Movement

“By the middle of the 20th century, the attitudes of women began to change and did

some attitudes toward prostitutes. The growing availability of controlling, increasing, and

to change the employment options for women, and the sexual revolution of the 1960's all

had an impact on the sex industry. In developed countries, prorated male used

prostitutes to services the earlier eras and who did had a fewer regulations were

scattered, criminalized only the woman not their clients and were use mainly for

harassment purpose.” Bullough, B. L., & Bullough, V. L. (1996). Collier's

they all carry ID badges proving their age. Girls have to be at least 18 to work in bars.

Despite the fact that prostitution is illegal in Angeles not one person has been convicted

of this crime. Unlike Manila, or Cebu, or Subic, or any of the other cities in the

Philippines, Angeles City has a large well organized bar scene that caters to the foreign

visitor. There are nearly 150 bars and 50,000 plus "licensed entertainers" (bar girls)

here. And many of them are located within a 2 minute walk of each other. It's small

enough to get around on foot, or with minimal transportation cost. There are hotels for

Social Efforts to Control Prostitution

“Attempts to regulate and tax prostitution have often been linked to concern for public

health. In the 19th century, a renewed effort to control prostitution by government

regulation and medical inspection was tied to attempts to control syphilis. Efforts to

regulate prostitution in naval centers in England led the reformer Josephine Butler

(1828-1906) to launch a drive decrying legally tolerated and inspected prostitution. Butler

carried the campaign for abolition into international politics, identifying illicit movement of

unwilling women and girls around the world, for purpose and calling for the elimination

of this practice. Ultimately, both the League of Nations and the United Nations became

involved in this effort.” Bullough, Bonnie. Bullough, Vern, L. (1996) Collier’s
