Lesson
Summary:
Children will select an easy listening book and a device to scan the QR code with. Each child may also
choose to use their classroom headphones with the device. Each book will have a QR code taped in
the front of the book so it can be scanned, and a video will populate with the story being read aloud.
The children may listen to as many books as they’d like during free choice activity time.

Estimated This lesson can be implemented for as long as the students are interested. This activity is child
Duration:
directed and the technology can be used for days or months depending on how the students do with
the technology. Working with younger children, each session can last for as long as the child will
tolerate. One child may want to read many books in a row while another will only want to listen to
half of one book at a time. Either is acceptable to fit the needs of the student. (Maximum 45 minutes
of free choice)

Preparatio What preparation is needed? Videos with the appropriate book reading must be ran
n of through a safe screening to be used with young children and their families. The
materials corresponding QR code will be printed out and taped into the book so it is accessible to
and the child. Children will need to be shown the appropriate way to use the technology, so
environme they are more equipped to be independent with it.
nt
What materials will be used? Preparation: generation software/apps, printer, paper,
tape, YouTube
Activity: iPads, story books, headphones
How will the learning environment be set up? Children will be encouraged to find a
place of their own to be able to focus on their listening and reading of the book. Each
child will be able to choose one book at a time along with an iPad and their classroom
headphones if they’d like to use those. The child will use the iPad to scan the code and
then will listen to the story being read to them. If they’d like to listen to more than one
story, they are welcome to do that.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 0:

The first step will be to determine which book(s) to use for the easy listening center. In the beginning you may choose
to do only a few to see how the classroom handles the new technology and then continue to do all the books this way
if it goes well. In preparation you must find a link to a YouTube video where the book is being read aloud and then
that link will be processed through a safe URL generator that will eliminate any inappropriate ads or video
suggestions. That link will then be used to make the QR code that will be printed and taped into the books. Once this
is completed, the classroom iPads will need to be equipped with a reader so the codes can be scanned.

Day 1:
The students will be introduced to the new technology during circle time and will be taught how to use it properly. A
demonstration style of teaching will be used in this setting. The students will choose a book out of the prepared and
that one will be read in circle time. The teacher will scan the code from the inside of the book and the video recording
will play. The teacher will be able to hold the book so all the children can see the pages and read along together.

Day 2 and beyond:

The new technology will be made available to the students and they will be encouraged to use it as they like. Any time
they want to use the easy listening books they will select one along with an iPad and their headphones. The length of
time they listen is their decision during their free choice period.

Extension

benefits-listening.html

This extension is more for the parents of the students to give a reasoning why children listening to stories is a benefit
to a child’s early literacy skills.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the
needs of gifted or accelerated students: This activity can be changed to meet the needs of accelerated students by
including a sequencing activity while the book is being read to the child. They will be placing the events in the correct
order to retell the story.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:
This activity could be done with an adult where the story could be played and the storyline could be pointed out along
the way with the child. For example, as the story is being told the adult will point out where the boy is painting on the
picture or the mouse is eating his cookie.
