12 What type should your construction
company use?
If you’ve been following our blog, you may’ve seen our recent posts about projects
sections on construction websites. In them, we talk a lot about how useful online
portfolios are for building your construction company’s credibility, increasing time
visitors spend on your site, and displaying your amazing abilities as a construction
crew.

What these posts don’t cover is the types of layouts you have to choose from, how
they look and which would work best for your own construction business.

I’d say it’s about time we talked about all that. But rst, you may be wondering…

Why care so much about what type of portfolio

to feature on my construction website?
Great question. The answer actually stems from another question:

What do people need to see on your website to be able to truly grasp what you
have to offer?

Think about who you’re communicating with through your portfolio and what
information your website visitors want to know when they’re seeking out your
services. Based on the answer you come up with for the question above, you can
map out a portfolio layout that balances aesthetics and functionality.

Let’s dive into your options.

Types & Examples of Construction Website

Portfolios
1. Photo Gallery Portfolios

Example: AT Homes
Are you a custom home builder? Maybe you specialize in home renovating and
remodeling. If you primarily work with homeowners, you’ll likely agree they tend to
mainly care about how the nished product looks rather than the nitty gritty details
of how you make rooms and houses look pretty.

A Photo Gallery portfolio is ideal for construction companies who work closely
with residential homeowners, as its main purpose is to display gorgeous photos of
newly built and renovated homes in an organized fashion.

How does my construction company bene t from featuring a

Photo Gallery portfolio?

1. This portfolio type immediately communicates your abilities through

imagery, which keeps website visitors owing happily through your
projects section looking at your pictures and realizing how awesome you
are. If you have impressive photos of your work that speak for
themselves, this one’s for you.

2. This type of portfolio helps to prevent your visitors from feeling

overwhelmed with details they’re not interested in during the research
phase of their buying cycle.

3. If you’re a really busy company, a Photo Gallery style of portfolio can save
you valuable time. All you have to do is upload your images to the right
place within your portfolio and VOILA! Portfolio updated!

4. Don’t have a huge budget for building a website portfolio? Photo galleries
are perfect low-budget option to get something effective onto your site.

What might keep me from choosing this kind of portfolio for my

construction website?
Photo Gallery portfolios aren’t ideal to use if you’re looking to improve search
engine optimization (SEO) on your website. No text content on the pages makes
keyword optimization pretty tough…

And unfortunately, if you want to include these in your email newsletters, you’ll
have to manually add them.

2. Project Overview Portfolios

Example: OCCI Engineering Contractors, Inc.

If you’re an engineering company, your prospects are usually interested in the
problems you’ve solved for your clients, right? Or say you build bridges, and
showcasing who you’ve worked with and your coverage area helps your prospects
grasp your range of abilities.

Does your company t the bill? If so, a Project Overview portfolio may be the way
to go.

How does my construction company bene t from featuring a

Project Overview portfolio?

1. This portfolio type showcases images from your completed work and
provides important project details on the main projects page, giving
visitors (and potential hires) an immediate understanding what you’re
capable of, who you’ve helped and how far your services reach.

2. When you give visitors a “Learn More” option leading to an individual

project page with additional project details, you can feature common
terms on these pages that your prospects may use to search for you
online, thus improving onsite SEO.

3. Project Overview portfolios work well with sorting capabilities, meaning

you can categorize your projects by industry, job type, location or status,

thus providing easy navigation for your website visitors.

4. It’s great to use this type of portfolio if you have lower quality images, or
if your pictures just don’t communicate a lot as standalone images.

5. When built correctly, this type of project section can easily be integrated
with an email marketing software such as MailChimp to send new
projects out to your email list automatically.

What might keep me from choosing this kind of portfolio for my

construction website?
This portfolio layout isn’t ideal for your website if you’re wanting to use high-
quality, professional images, as this layout tends to minimizes imagery and
focuses more what your client’s problem was and what you did to solve it.

3. “The Hybrid”: Extended Gallery with Project

Example: Simon Oswald Architecture

If you’re an architect, commercial renovator, or a commercial construction
company, it’s likely you’re working with several decision makers within a company
whose concerns about the project may vary. Some may only care about the
engineering side of things, some just care who else you’ve worked for, while others
are more concerned with the way the nished project will look.

If this sounds about right, an Extended Gallery with Project Features brings the
best of both worlds together to make the ideal portfolio for your construction
website.  This method pairs larger images to show off your great photography and
also showcases supporting details so keep everyone happy.

How does my construction company bene t from featuring an

Extended Gallery with Project Features?

1. With this type of portfolio, you can showcase stunning imagery of your
completed projects to appeal to your prospects’ aesthetic interests while
subtly offering key project features for visitors more interested in the
industries you’ve worked in and clients you’ve helped.

2. This project section type is ideal for companies listing SEO as a high
marketing priority. By featuring a main project page that leads to
individual project pages with more information, you can use common
terms within the text of these pages that your prospects often use when
searching online for your services.

3. Photo galleries with project features also work well with sorting
capabilities, letting you categorize your projects by industry, job type,
location or status and providing easy navigation for your website visitors.

4. Again, if it’s set up correctly, it’s easy to integrate this type of portfolio
with an email marketing software so your audience automatically
receives email updates featuring your new projects.

What might keep me from choosing this kind of portfolio for my

construction website?
Often times there’s more designing, programming and functionality involved in
planning and creating built-out projects sections like these, which can bring up the
cost of adding a portfolio to your website.

Need a broader perspective? We get it.

There’s a lot of information up there, huh?

Hopefully this visual overview of features and information by portfolio type will
help you digest the information above to determine what would work best for your
construction company:

It’s not very black and white.

There are various levels of uidity in web design and programming, making what
seems like a simple decision actually quite challenging when you stop to consider
the possibilities.

There’s no need to feel overwhelmed though. Sometimes, the only way to truly
know what works best for your construction website is to talk with a web
development expert about your goals, capabilities and limits. Luckily, we might
know one who’d love to chat.
