1. Develop the methodology to find the state of the system (vapor and liquid compositions
and T, and P) for a flash unit when the following two variables are specified: ∅ = 𝑉/𝐹
and T.
2. Assume the feed into a flash tank consists of 25 motes pentane, 40 moles cis-2- butene
and 35 moles n-butane.
a. Calculate dew and bubble point temperatures of the feed stream at 200 kPa.
b. Find the recovery of n-butane when the pressure is 200 kPa and temperature is 300K.
What will be the bubble and dew point temperatures of the two streams leaving the
flash unit
c. If the flash tank operates at 100 kPa, at what temperature could you recover 60% cis-
2-butene in the vapor?
3. Prove that the number of degrees of freedom in a distillation column is 3 using the
following schematic. Support your answer with material balance and equilibrium
equations.
Propylene45 gmol/s
trans-2-butene10gmol/s
cis-2-butene15gmol/s
i-butene6gmol/s
Ethylene5gmol/s
Propane4gmol/s
It is desired to recover 99.5% of the propylene in the distillate and 99% of trans·2-butene
in the bottom stream.
a. Determine the temperature of the feed stream and the minimum number ofplates that
arerequired for the column.
b. Determine the mole fraction composition of the distillate and the bottoms.
d. If cooling water at 90°F is to be used in the condenser with ΔT min = 10ºC,what
would be the lowest pressures at which the column should operate if thedistillate is
obtained as eithersaturated liquid or saturated vapor? Also, for thesetwo cases, what
would be the maximum temperatures in a total reboiler?
a. If water is to be used as the solvent, estimate its required flow rate for the following
conditions:
P column T water
2 bar 300°K
2 bar 330°K
10 bar 3000°K
10 bar 330°K
