EXPERIMENT 2
THEORY:
In order to have a long lasting circuit breaker, routine maintenance should be practiced.
For a Schneider Evolis VCB, maintenance is done periodically. Table 2.1 below provides
the scheduled maintenance requirements for the said VCB:
To carry out maintenance on this VCB, first it need to be racked out from the main panel.
Figure 2.2 and Figure 2.3 below shows the Rack In/Out Handle and the Earthing Switch of
this particular VCB.
EQUIPMENT:
1. Schneider Evolis Vacuum Circuit Breaker
2. Extraction Trolley (ET)
PROCEDURE:
3. Turn the Crank handle clock wise to rack out the VCB. Turn it until the removal part
position indicator B, has shown Rack Out position.
Position
Indicator
4. Turn the Selector Switch, C to Extraction and insertion of the circuit breaker position
5. Check the Voltage Indication, E at the earthing switch panel to ensure that there is no
voltage present.
6. To close the earthing switch, pull out and turning control knob 4 of the earthing switch
panel to position.
7. Insert the crank handle into the operation shaft “5” and turn the handle clockwise until
the position indicator “L” changes state. Closure is accompanied by a distinctive
sound.
8. Turn the selector switch, “4” to by pulling it out and turning it.
9. The earthing switch is now at earthed position and MV cable is now short to earth.
10. Open the cubicle door by pulling its handle and turning anticlockwise 90 degrees.
13. Lock in place by turning the two handles on the ET. Apply the brakes on the 2 castors
of the ET.
14. Unlock the catch on the front rail prior to extracting the removable part. Extract the
removable part, until it reaches the rear stop on the service/test position (manually
defeating the interlocks if necessary)
15. Disconnect the ET by turning the two handles to disengage the cradle. Release the
brakes on the ET castors and withdraw the ET.
DISCUSSION
Write a simple procedure on the Methodology to Rack In the VCB. (Hint: The Rack In
procedure is opposite sequence to Rack Out procedure).
