There is a gap in social and communication research about the Peruvian meaning as a stereotype
and / or as a television stigma associated with the processes of affirming the national identity and
culture, a situation that demands to be addressed and considers the media in general, and La open
television in particular, have become a very important strategic space in the construction and
affirmation of identities such as the Peruvian, diversity and great historical social disagreements.
In this context, I pose the question: what is the symbolic sense of stereotypes and stigmas about
Peruvian in the most rated programs of Peruvian television with an open signal in the processes of
affirming culture and national identity?
The hypotheses are, first, the stereotypes and television stereotypes about the Peruvian with
greater intensity and scope. open, criollo, cholo acriollado, gay, black, pumpkin (person of short
term) and charapa (person born in the region of the jungle).
Second, the symbolic meaning of stereotypes and stigmas about Peruvian in the higher-rated
programs of Peruvian open-signal television is a replica of the affirmative dynamic of Western,
transnational and ethnocentric culture, the same as gender stereotypes and stigmas that
reproduce prejudices stored for centuries in the collective memory and encourage racism,
discrimination, homophobia and the inferiority complex; Therefore, it is unfavorable for the
processes of affirming the national culture and identity.
The problem of national culture, associated with the concern to determine the character of the
Peruvian nation, is insistently based since the early twentieth century, highlighting two opposing
positions: hispanist and indigenista .
