What is TED?
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short,
powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where
Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all
topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100
X
languages. Meanwhile, independently run TED events help share ideas in
communities around the world.
X
What is TED ?
X
A TED event is a local gathering where live TED-like talks and performances
X
are shared with the community. TED events are fully planned and coordinated
independently, on a community-by-community basis. The content and design of
X
each TED event is unique and developed independently, but all of them have
features in common.
X
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED is a program of local, self-organized
X
events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TED
event, TED talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and
X
connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TED , where x =
independently organized TED event. The TED conference provides general
X X
guidance for the TED program, but individual TED events are self-organized.
X
What will be TED ShardaUniversity?
X
TED ShardaUniversity will be an independently organized TED event operated
under the license from TED. The one-day conference will feature eminent
speakers from different walks of life who will share unique ideas.
X
TED ShardaUniversity will bring together a community of curious minds to
engage with ideas and each other.
X
The TED ShardaUniversity team is a collaboration of young and like-minded
people with the vision and drive to spread ideas that are worth sharing.
University event:
X
University events are TED events hosted at a college or university, and
organized by current university administration staff, faculty or students. It
gives universities the opportunity to share the unique innovation and ideas
that their community is creating.
About this event type
A university event license follows the same format as the standard event
license, except this event is co-branded with a university name (e.g.,
X
“TED NYU”). This means that the event is hosted by that college or university,
so you’ll need permission from that school to hold the event and to use the
university's name.
A university license must be held by a current student, faculty or staff member
of that university. (Sorry, former staff or alumni aren’t eligible to apply!) One
license is allocated per university. However, in special circumstances where a
university has schools located in different cities, we can permit licenses for
separate events.
If you are a student, we do not recommend applying or suggesting an event
X
date in your final semester. It takes at least three months to organize a TED
event and there are a number of things to do after your event takes place.
The following applies to all university events:
Naming your event:
Your event will be named after the full name of the university (e.g.,
X X
“TED StrathmoreUniversity”, “TED NixorCollege”).
Audience:
Usually, the audience of a university event are students, faculty and/or
administration, but it will ultimately be up to you to decide who you want your
guests to be.
Size:
X
Like standard TED events, university events can have up to 100 guests. Only
individuals who have attended an official TED conference can organize an
event with more than 100 attendees.
Theme:
For a university event type, your focus or theme should be multidisciplinary
and broad, and address a variety of topics. You’ll want to feature a diversity of
speakers from across several disciplines, and speakers from the university
where you’re holding your event. To get an idea of what you want the focus of
your event to be.
Duration:
University events can be as brief as a couple of hours, and up to one day in
length.
Pricing:
You may charge up to $100 USD per ticket to attendees.
