FUNDA ACTIVITY

1. Compare and contrast spiritual needs, spiritual distress and spiritual health

 Spiritual needs are not a problem to be processed, but perhaps better understood as inner
movement as, yearning, or experiences. While, the spiritual distress is a disturbance in the belief
or value system that provide strength, hope, and meaning to life. Also, it is a categorized defining
characteristic of spiritual distress by whether they reflect an impaired connection with self, others,
art/music/literature/nature, or a power greater than self. On the other hand, the Spiritual health is
often portrayed as the opposite of spiritual distress.

2. Describe the influence of spiritual and religious beliefs and practices that can have an impact on client’s
healthcare: holy days, sacred texts, prayer and meditation, diet, healing, dress, birth and death

Holy days

 Holy days may include fasting, or special foods, reflection, rituals and prayers which can may
have a negative or positive impact to the patient’s health care.

Sacred text

 People often gain strength and hope from reading religious writings when they are ill or in crisis.

Sacred symbols

 Sacred symbols maybe worn to pronounce one’s faith to remind the practitioner of the faith, to
provide spiritual protection, or to be source of comfort or strength.

Prayer and Meditation

 Prayer involve human pleading or experiencing a divine power while some would describe
prayers as an inner experience and awareness of self. While meditation is the act of focusing
one’s thoughts or engaging in self-reflection or contemplation. Some people believe that, through
deep meditation, one can influence or control physical and psychological functioning and the
course of illness.
Beliefs affecting diet

 Many religions have prescriptions regarding diet. It is important that health care providers
prescribe diet plans with an awareness of the client’s dietary and fasting beliefs. There may be
rules about which foods and beverages are allowed and which are prohibited.

Beliefs about illness and Healing

 Some clients may ascribe disease to the innate presence of sin and evil in this world, whereas
others may believe the disease is a punishment for sin in their past. Indeed, how clients view the
divine, interpret good and evil, and so forth, inevitably influences their thinking about illness and
decision making about treatment.

Beliefs about dress and modesty

 nurses are aware of the religious needs of families and their infants; they can support families in
fulfilling their religious obligations. Fulfilling their religious obligation has an impact in the patients'
healthcare, it can increase the morale of the patient

Beliefs related to birth

 all religions the birth of a child is an important event giving cause for celebration. Many religions
have specific ritual ceremonies that consecrate the new child to God.

Beliefs related to death

 Many believe that the person who dies transcends this life for a better place or state of being.
Research findings suggest these religious beliefs may influence end-of-life care choices, such as
whether to seek hospice care or have an advanced care plan

3. As a future nurse have you recognize the importance of providing ethical spiritual care in these times of
crisis. (COVID-19) if Yes, please expound your answer. If No, please explain.

As a future nurse providing ethical spiritual care in these times of crisis is important to the health care of
the patient because it can help people make sense of illness and cope with what lies ahead especially
these times of crisis.
