Who Died in the Holocaust

Bucknell Opera Theatre Emily Martin, director
Nicholas Roseth, conductor
The Holocaust is the best-documented case of genocide in human history. Despite this, it has
proven difficult to provide exact counts of people who were killed as a result of Nazi orders
or policies. Scholars use census reports, captured German and Axis archives and postwar
investigations to build their estimates. As more documents come to light or as understandings
change, the estimates may also change.

What follow are the current best estimates of civilians and captured soldiers killed by the Nazi
regime and its collaborators:
Jews – 6 million
Soviet civilians (non-Jewish) – 5.7 million
Soviet prisoners of war – 3 million
Polish civilians (non-Jewish) – 1.8 million
Serb civilians (non-Jewish) – 312,000
People with disabilities: up to 250,000
Roma: up to 250,000
Jehovah’s Witnesses: 1,900
Repeat criminals (including so-called ‘asocials’): at least 70,000
Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Transgender, Non-Binary Gender, etc.: Hundreds, possibly
thousands (and some more may have been included in the abovementioned
‘asocial’ category)
Political dissidents: undetermined
