SUMMARY

Datil pepper has many nutritional benefits and is widely used as spice among

Asian countries. It has also the capability to kill insects found in common households.

Keeping in view these facts about Datil pepper and its usability, this study aims to test the

efficacy of Datil pepper fruit extract against wood termites. Grinding and squeezing

method was used to get the juices from the fruit. Fifteen termites were collected from dry

wood. They were then placed into three open containers, sprayed by the extract and

observed within 10 minutes. In container A that has 100 percent concentration of the

Datil pepper extract, termites were killed abruptly in 3 minutes and after 5 minutes,

termites were found dead in container B (75 % of Datil pepper fruit extract and 25%

distilled water). In the span of 6 minutes, termites within container C (50 % of Datil

pepper fruit extract and 50% distilled water) were exterminated.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter discusses the introduction that includes the rationale, conceptual

framework, assumptions, and significance of the study, scope and limitations, and

definition of terms.

Introduction

Pesticides have been utilized worldwide to prevent and manage unwanted pests.

They are important for disease control and providing food and fiber for a growing world

population. With the introduction of pesticides, farmers have been able to ensure

bountiful harvests and reduce labour. Pesticides are therefore an indispensable tool for

the sustainable production of high quality food and fibers. Synthetic pesticides leave

harmful residues in crops for human consumption increased the interest in using organic

products for pest control. These toxic residues are significant and cannot be dismissed

considering the amount of human consumption of these vegetables on a daily basis.

Several researches in the Philippines were made to address insects. Some of these studies

used organic substances as their main ingredients.

In this study, the researchers will utilize a Datil pepper or Capsicum chinense, a

species of habanero-type chili peppers. In comparison to the jalapeno peppers, the Datil

pepper is said to be 12 to 120 times hotter (Southern Kitchen, 2019). It possesses the

chemical capsaicin which might prove to be useful against termites. The active
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 10

component of Datil pepper is a natural chemical that is often found on animal repellents

and sometimes on products to repel insects and mites.

Filipinos are aware that Termites are one of the common problems in some

households as they cause the destruction of any furniture and shelter made of wood. They

are often referred to as the “white ant” because of their size and colour. Coptotermes

gestroi, the Asian subterranean termite is a small species of termite that lives

underground. This termite is also known as the Philippine milk termite (Coptotermes

gestroi). There are two major methods of termite control. You can use liquid termite

insecticides (termiticides) for barrier and soil treatment or use termite baits. Both of these

methods work on exterminating the termites, but the termiticides have been known to

take effect faster.

This study aims to find out the effectiveness of Datil (Capsicum chinense) pepper

extract as an insecticide that can kill termites (Coptotermes gestroi). Using similar studies

that utilized chilli peppers, this study also aim to compare its results to other chilli pepper

insecticides. In addition, several studies have indicated the potential ecological damage

due to the widespread use of inorganic pesticides. Hence, this study may prove to be an

essential part for a further study about the development of an organically produced

insecticide that can lessen the need of chemically-produced insecticide.

DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 11

Specific Objectives of the Study

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Datil pepper extract against

termites.

1. To prove that the Datil pepper is a potent insecticide.

2. To test the effectiveness of the Datil pepper (Capsicum chinense) fruit extract

against termites (Coptotermes gestroi).

3. To determine the difference between the effects of Datil pepper (Capsicum

chinense) fruit extract and commercial insecticide.

4. To determine the difference between the effects of Datil pepper (Capsicum

chinense) fruit extract and the chilli pepper (Capsicum frutescens) fruit extract.

Assumptions

These are the following assumptions of the research:

1. The study assumes that Datil pepper insecticide can annihilate termites.

2. A Datil pepper insecticide is more effective than other type of chilli pepper

insecticide.

3. Insecticides that are made of Datil pepper are more effective than commercial

insecticides.

Significance of the Study

DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 12

This study aims to understand the effectiveness of Datil pepper as an insecticide.

The researchers are confident that this product research can contribute to the existing

body of research and improve the quality of life. It is important to the following:

Consumers. The information indicated will be significant to the consumers because this

product can prevent diseases and complications on their caused by the harmful effects of

inorganic insecticides.

Farmers. The study can help develop an insecticide that is low-cost and environment

friendly, increasing their profits. Insecticides increase farm profits by helping the farmer

save money on labour costs.

Future Researchers. The study can be used as basis to future studies about insecticides

and will also help future researchers to study the effect of Datil pepper to other insects.

Scope and Limitations

The study focuses on the effectiveness of the Datil pepper extract as an insecticide

against termites. On the other hand, the study will not cover the other factors that lead to

the results of the experiment. The data will be collected through observation by the

researchers. The experimentation process will be conducted in FAITH Colleges

laboratory. Moreover, techniques involve the correct method in order for the equipment

to work according to their use like grinding, transferring and measuring. Equipment can

be made from recyclable materials which can be found on homes or to the laboratory

equipment.

Definition of Terms

Datil pepper (Capsicum chinense) – is an organic spicy flavored fruit is used to

experiment as a pesticides to help preventing the maximum amount of pest that destroys

the rapid growth of crops.

Insecticides- are substances used to kill a specific type of insect. It includes ovicides and

larvicides that have the capacity to dispatch insect eggs and larvae, respectively.

Insecticides are commonly used in agriculture, medicine, industry and by consumers.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT)- is a synthetic organic compound used as an

insecticide. Like other chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, DDT tends to persist in the

environment and become concentrated in animals at the head of the food chain. Its use is

now banned in many countries.

Philippine Milk Termite (Coptotermes gestroi) - is Asian subterranean termite is a small

species of termite that lives underground. Both this species and the Formosan

subterranean termite, are destructive pests native to Asia, but have spread to other parts of

the world including the United States.

DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 15

Pesticides- are substances that are meant to control pests, including weeds. The term

pesticide includes all of the following: herbicide, insecticides nematicide, molluscicide,

piscicide, avicide, rodenticide, bactericide, insect repellent, animal repellent,

antimicrobial, and fungicide.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies that helped the researcher

to supports the concepts of the study. It also aims that established literature and studies

have existing ideas, which assist to answer the problems that the researcher wanted to

solve.

Conceptual Literature

Datil Pepper (Capsicum Chinense)

The usage of organic, plant-based insecticides is a common practice among

farmers that utilizes the plant’s natural defences against insects. It may not be only

inexpensive, but also safer and more environmental-friendly. Some plants have their own

natural insecticide within them to fend off insects, many plant species produce substances

that protect them by killing or repelling the insects that feed on them. For example, the

Douglas fir has a special sap that fends off beetles if it is attacked. Neem trees secrete oil

that changes the hormones of bugs so that they cannot fly, breed or eat (Petruzuello,

2018).The Datil pepper (Capsicum chinense) contains the active chemical capsaicin, the

chemical responsible for making it spicy, works well against insects. Most insects will
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 16

avoid capsaicin because it has such a strong odor and taste. It also irritates their skin,

According to Kaila (2011), Capsaicin at 10 parts per million causes a persistent burning

sensation. Capsaicin works by opening the gaps in the cell membranes that enable

calcium ions to flood into the cell, making it trigger a pain signal that is transmitted to the

next cell repeatedly.

Moreover, we can measure the hotness of a chilli using Scoville Scale. The

Scoville Scale can be used to not only measure chili peppers, but anything that is made

from chili peppers, such as hot sauce. What is really being measured is the concentration

of “capsaicin“, the active ingredient that produces that sensation of heat on our tongues.

The term “capsaicin” comes from the pepper plants’ classification, of the genus

Capsicum. Capsaicin occurs naturally in peppers along with other capsaiciniods, all of

which make up the unique tastes and heat reactions of each pepper, depending on their

ratios.

Below is a list of Scoville Heat Units (SHU) of the most common chili peppers:

 Bell Pepper – 0 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)

 Banana Peppers – 0 – 500 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)
 Shishito Peppers – 50 – 200 SHU
 Pepperoncini Peppers – 100 – 500 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)

 Chile de Arbol Peppers – 15,000 – 65,000 SHU
 Cayenne Peppers – 30,000 – 50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)
 Chiltepin Peppers – 50,000 – 100,000 SHU
 Thai Pepper – 50,000 – 100,000 SHU
 Datil Peppers – 100,000 – 300,000 SHU
 Habanero Peppers – 100,000 – 350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)
 Scotch Bonnet Peppers – 100,000 – 350,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)

 Komodo Dragon Peppers – 1.4 Million – 2.2 Million SHU
 Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Pepper – 2,009,231 SHU
 Carolina Reaper Chili Pepper – 2.2 Million + Scoville Heat Units (SHU)

Datils are quite hot by any chili pepper standard. They measure from 100,000 to

300,000 Scoville Heat Units on the Scoville Scale, placing them in the territory of both

habanero peppers and Scotch Bonnets. Compare that to the more common jalapeno

pepper, which averages around 5,000 Scoville Heat Units, and you’ll find the datil pepper

can be up to 60 times hotter. (Hultquist, 2019).

Termites (Coptotermes gestroi)

Termites in some households are common problem as they cause destruction of

furniture, building, or anything made of wood. They are small white insects which live in

hot countries. Termites do a lot of damage by eating wood. According to Ring & Wilson

(2016), termites cause more damage to homes than all other natural disasters combined.
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 18

They are often referred to as the “white ant” because of their size and colour. Nicknames

such as “the little white thing” or “little white ant” come up in discussing this insect. This

termite is also known as the Philippine milk termite (Coptotermes gestroi). Modern

houses make extensive use of concrete slabs, and for most effective termite proofing

much of the chemical barrier needs to be put under these slabs (Aguhob et al., 2012).

Insecticides

Insecticides are chemicals used to control insects by killing them or preventing

them from engaging in undesirable or destructive behaviours. According to Colon et al.

(2016), insecticides kill by affecting the physiology of the insect. It abrades the skin of

the insect, causing them to lose water. They are classified based on their structure and

mode of action. Many insecticides act upon the insect's nervous system (e.g.,

cholinesterase inhibition), while others act as growth regulators or endotoxins (University

of Environmental Protection Agency, 2019).

Synthetic insecticides leave harmful residues in crops for human consumption. In

support with this, a study conducted by Benson and Olufunke (2011) found low levels of

toxic residues from organochlorine pesticides on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and

chilli pepper (Capsicum annuum) in a market survey conducted in Nigeria.

Another major problem associated with pesticide use is bioaccumulation and

biological magnification. Bioaccumulation occurs when a substance builds up in a body

because the does not have the proper mechanisms to remove it. Many synthetic pesticides

are not able to be broken down. Once they enter the body of organism, they are
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 19

permanently stored in the body tissue. In relation to this, a study conducted by Yu et al.

(2014) examined Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins to analyse whether there is a presence

of toxic residues within them. The results of this study showed that DDTs were the most

abundant residue in the dolphins, followed by polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and other

organochlorine pesticides.

Research Literature

The Datil pepper fruit extract has the ability to kill termites because insects tend

to avoid plants with strong odor or taste, killing or repelling them away. Moreover, some

studies suggest that capsaicin based insecticides have the same effects to other insects

like mites and ants. According to the National Pesticide Information Center (2009), the

capsaicin present in the Datil pepper causes the membrane of the insect’s cells to suffer

damage as well as disrupting its nervous system.

In support with this study, a research made by Cuadrado et al. (2019) entitled

Insecticidal Properties of Capsaicinoids and Glucosinolates Extracted from Capsicum

chinense and Tropaeolum tuberosum used a mixture of capsaicinoids and glucosinolates

to test its insecticidal effects on aphids (Aphis cytisorum). Under laboratory conditions,

they found out that both capsaicinoids and glucosinolates have biocidal effect on aphids

in just a shot amount of time. Thus, it is proved that the capsaicin present on the Datil

pepper has the ability to exterminate insects.

In addition to this, a study entitled The Feasibility of Malunggay leaves (Moringa

Oleifera) and Chili fruit (Capsicum Frutescens) as Pesticide was conducted to observe

whether the mixture of malunggay and chilli extract would work against cockroaches.
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 20

The researcher used commercial pesticide to compare its effectiveness to the mixture of

malunggay and chilli extract. The extract was effective against the cockroaches but the

commercial pesticide was more effective. It is therefore concluded that the extract of

malunggay and chilli pepper is feasible in making a pesticide (The Feasibility of

Malunggay Leaves, 2009)

A similar study by Colon et al. (2016), found out the effectiveness of Siling

Labuyo (Capsicum frutescens) fruit extract against Philippine Milk termites (Coptotermes

Gestroi). The results showed no effects on termites in container A (control group),

however, in container B that has 100 percent concentration of the extract, termites were

killed in the span of 5 minutes and after two hours, termites were dead in container C (50

% of chili pepper fruit extract and 50% distilled water). Therefore, the fruit extract of

chilli pepper has positive effects as an insecticide to household termites.

Synthesis

The information gathered from the related literature convinced the researchers to

believe that their proposed study is plausible. It began by providing the background of the

variables present in the study namely the Datil pepper (Capsicum chinense), the

Philippine Milk Termite (Coptotermes gestroi) and the definition of insecticides and its

types. Succeeding that, it stated studies that directly support the study. The researchers

aim to help produce a capsaicin-based product that can substitute or replace commercial

products that are harmful for the environment. Based on the studies cited and discussed,

the chilli pepper fruit extract has the ability to kill different types of insects, including the

specific species of termites that we need for this study. It has been proven across previous
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 21

evaluations against insects, whether it is used in a mixture or used pure. Therefore, the

researchers are confident that the data gathered throughout this study are sufficient in

supporting their study. They collected a fair amount of studies and experiments made by

researchers and scholars pertaining to the Chili pepper (Capsicum chinense) and its

effectiveness as an insecticide to termites (Coptotermes gestroi).

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents and discusses the design and methods employed in

conducting this research study. It has five parts: research design, subject of the study,

data gathering instrument, data gathering procedure and the observation. Each topic was

summarized and discussed as one.

Research Design

The study is a quantitative study utilized with experimental design. Experimental

research is any science-based study in which a number of variables are kept constant

while the other set of variables are calculated as the focus of the experiment. Researchers

need to conduct experiments in such conditions to discover the truth. Experimental

research can collect a lot of data that can help in making better choices (QuestionPro,

2020). This method of design allows the researchers to establish casual interpretations of

the significant relationship between independent and dependent variables. The

differences in other factors are calculated by the use and regulation of one or more

variables.

This study included the termites (Coptotermes gestroi) as the dependent factor

and the percentage of solution or the Datil Pepper (Capsicum chinense) extract as

independent variable.
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 23

The researchers believe that this is the most appropriate design to be used in the

study because it portrays the most appropriate technique to demonstrate the solution to

the problem and the characteristics of the experiment group.

Subject of the Study

This experimental study was conducted at FAITH. The researchers used termites

(Coptotermes gestroi) and Datil Pepper (Capsicum Chinense) as the subjects of the study.

Fifteen termites were gathered from dry wood to serve as test subjects. The test subjects

were checked whether they belong to the species the researchers required through

verification by the University of the Philipines Los Banos Natuural History Museum.

Data Gathering Instrument

The information was gathered through observing the termites’ response to the

Datil Pepper (Capsicum Chinense) fruit extract as an insecticide. The researchers used an

observation sheet to collect the adequate information needed. An observation sheet is a

type of organized instrument form used to record data obtained by closely observing

different samples. It also included the actual time and the duration of the trial and

conclusions. All the data were gathered and tabulated to ensure the accuracy of the

results.
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 24

Data Gathering Procedure

The following methods were observed and employed to evaluate the experimental

trials:

A. PREPARATION OF MATERIALS

The materials used in the study were Datil pepper extract and distilled water. In

addition the researchers also used termites to test the efficiency of Datil pepper extract.

These insects are gathered from Tanauan City, Batangas were the experimentation was

conducted. The researchers chose this locale because of its suitability for the requisite

operation, usability and resource availability.

B. PREPARATION OF EQUIPMENTS

To successfully test the solutions (100%, a number of equipment were used in the

experiment. Most of the equipment was bought from different stores in Tanauan City,

Batangas.
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 25

The researchers prepared a blender to grind the Datil pepper; a strainer to

completely get the extract from Datil pepper; measuring cup and dropper for

measurements; and spacious containers where the insects and Datil pepper extract were

placed.

C. STERILIZATION OF EQUIPMENTS AND INGREDIENTS

The stirring materials, strainer, and measuring cup were placed in a container with

hot water for ten minutes. An autoclave was used to sterilize the equipment and to

prevent other factors from affecting the results of the experiment.

DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 26

D. EXTRACTION OF DATIL PEPPER

To extract from Datil pepper, the Datil peppers were washed thoroughly and
grinded using a blender. The grinded pepper was then squeezed through a strainer to
get the extract of the chilli pepper.

The first solution was composed of 5ml of pure Datil pepper extract. The
second solution was composed of 5ml of Datil pepper extract mixed with 2.50 ml of
distilled water. The third solution was made up to 5ml Datil extract and 5 ml of
distilled water.
DATIL PEPPER FRUIT EXTRACT AGAINST TERMITES 27

Figure 2. Research Flow Chart

E. TESTING THE OUTPUT

When the extraction was done, the researchers prepared the insects for the

experiment. The different solutions under this factor were evaluated: termites

(Coptotermes gestroi) reaction. The researchers examined how efficient the Datil pepper

(Capsicum chinense) extracts as an insecticide.
