PART – B
1. An eyebolt is subjected to four forces (F1 = 12kN, F2 = 8kN, F3 = 18kN, and F4 = 4kN) that
act under given angles (θ1 = 450, θ2 = 1000, θ3 = 2050 and θ4 = 2700 respectively). With
respect to the horizontal. Determine the magnitude and directions of the resultant use both
analytical method and graphical method.
2. The forces F1, F2 and F3 all which act on point A of the bracket are specified in three different
ways. Determine the x and y scalar components of each of the three forces.
3. A disabled automobile is pulled by means if two ropes as shown in fig. knowing that the
tension in rope AB is 3kN, determine (a) the required angle α if the resultant R of the two
forces applied to the support is to be horizontal, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R.

4. Determine the resultant R of the two forces applied to the bracket. Write R in terms of unit
vectors along the x and y – axes shown in figure.

5. Four forces act on bolt A as shown in figure. Determine the resultant of the forces on the bolt.

6. A well section of precast concrete is temporarily held in place by the cables shown in figure.
If the tension is 1000 N in cable AB and 1500 N in cable AC. Determine the magnitude and
direction of the resultant if the forces exerted by cables AB and AC on stake A.
7. The springs on the rope assembly are originally stretched 1 ft when θ = 0o. determine the
vertical force F that must be applied so that θ = 30o

8. Replace the couple and force shown by an equivalent single force applied to the lever.
Determine the distance from the shaft to the point of application of this equivalent force.

9. A 4.80m long beam is subjected to the forces as shown in figure. Reduce the given system of
forces to (a) an equivalent force – couple system at A, (b) an equivalent force – couple system
at B, (c) a single force or resultant. (Note: The reactions at the supports are not included in
the given system of forces, the given system will not maintain the beam in equilibrium.)

10. A 6 ×12 – in. plate is subjected to four loads as shown in figure. Find the resultant of the four
loads and the two points at which the line of action of the resultant intersects the edge of the
plate. ( 1 lb = 4.45 N)
11. Determine the distance s to which the 90kg painter can climb without causing the 4 m ladder
to slip at its lower end A. The top of the 15kg ladder has a small roller, and at the ground the
coefficient of static friction is 0.25.

12. The horizontal position of the 500kg rectangular block of concrete is adjusted by the 5o wedge
under the action of the force P. If the coefficient of static friction for both wedge surface is
0.30 and if the coefficient of static friction between the block and the horizontal surfaces is
0.60, determine the least force P required to move the block.
13. A loading car is at rest on a track forming an angle of 25o with the vertical. The gross weight
of the car and its load is 5500lb and it acts at point 30in from the track, halfway between the
two axles. The car is held by a cable attached 24in. from the track. Determine the tension in
the cable and the reaction at each pair of wheels.

14. The position of the machine block B is adjusted by moving the wedge A. Knowing that the
co-efficient of static friction is 0.35 between all surfaces of contact, determine the force P
required to (a) raise block B, (b) lower block B.

15. Find the area moment of inertia for the shaded area shown in below figures.

16. The forces 20N, 30N, 40N, 50N are acting at one of the angular points of a regular hexagon,
towards the other five angular points, taken in order. Find the magnitude and direction of the
resultant force.
17. A uniform wheel of 0.4 m diameter, weighing 8 kN, rests against a rigid rectangular block 0.1
m thick as shown in fig. Find the least pull through the centre of the wheel to just turn it over
the corner of the block. All surfaces are smooth. Find the reaction of the block as well.

18. Three cylinders are piled in a rectangular ditch as shown in fig. Neglecting friction, determine
the reaction between cylinder r C and the vertical wall. The radius of cylinders A= 5cm, B=6
cm, C=4 cm.

19. For the given force system, find the resultant and its point of application and direction. All

20. A system of parallel forces acting on a lever is as shown. Determine the magnitude, direction
and position of the resultant.

21. Four forces equal to 10 N, 20 N, 30 N and 40 N are respectively acting along four sides (1 m
each) of a square ABCD, taken in order. Determine the magnitude, direction and position of
the resultant.

between the ladder and the floor.
26. A uniform ladder 20 m long weighs 1800 N. It is placed against a wall making an angle of 600 with
floor. The coefficient of friction between the wall and the ladder is 0.38 and that between the floor and
the ladder is 0.33. The ladder in addition to its own weight has to support a man weighing 900 N at
the top of the ladder. Calculate the horizontal force F to be applied to the ladder at the floor level to
prevent slipping.
27. A uniform ladder 5 m long weighs 300 N. It is placed against a wall making an angle 600 with floor.
The coefficient of friction between the wall and the ladder is 0.25 and that between the floor and the
ladder is 0.35. The ladder in addition to its own weight has to support a man weighing 900 N at the
top of the ladder. Calculate the horizontal force F to be applied to the ladder at the floor level to prevent
slipping.
28. A uniform ladder 3 m long weighs 18 N. It is placed against a wall making 600 with floor. The
coefficient of friction between the wall and the ladder is 0.25 and that between the floor and the ladder
is 0.35. The ladder in addition to its own weight has to support a man weighing 90 N at the top of the
ladder. Calculate the horizontal force F to be applied to the ladder at the floor level to prevent slipping.
29. Calculate the push required to keep a ladder (length 8 m, weight = 750 N) in equilibrium, while a
person (weight 1000 N) standing at the top. The ladder makes an angle of 200 with wall and take
coefficient of friction for wall and surface = 0.3.
30. Determine the minimum angle which can be made by a ladder with the floor and leaning against a
smooth wall without slipping under its own weight while supporting a person at top, whose weight is
double the weight of the ladder. Take μ = 0.35 wherever applicable.
31. The weight of a 12 m long ladder is 2000 N and it is placed against a wall making an angle of 580 with
floor. The coefficient of friction between wall and ladder is 0.30 and floor and ladder is 0.32. Calculate
up to what length a person of weight 800 N can climb the ladder.
32. Two identical rollers each of weight 1000N are supported by an inclined plane and a vertical wall as
shown in fig below. Find the support reactions at points A,B&C. assume all surfaces to be smooth.

33. A plate is acted upon by 3 forces and 2 couples as shown in fig. Determine the resultant of these force-
couple system and find co-ordinate x of the point on the x – axis through which the resultant passes.
34. Two beams AB and CD are shown in figure. A and D are hinged supports. B and C are roller
supports. Sketch the free body diagram of the beam AB and CD and determine the reactions at
the supports A, B, C & D.

35. A block of weight 1290 N rests on a horizontal surface and supports another block of weight 570
N on top of it as shown in fig. Find the force P applied to the lower block that will be necessary
to cause slipping to impend. Coefficient of friction between block (1) and (2) is 0.25 and
Coefficient of friction between block (1) and surface is 0.4.

PART -C (Creative Questions)


1. The guy cables AB and AC are attached to the top of the transmission tower. The tension in
cables AB is 8kN. Determine the required tension T in cable AC such that the net effect of
the two cable tensions is a downward force at point A. Determine the magnitude R of this
downward force.
2. The roof is supported by cables as shown in the figure. If the cables exert forces FAB = 100N
and FAC = 120N on the wall hook at A as shown in Fig. Determine the resultant force acting
at A. express the result as a cartesian vector.

3. A small crane is mounted along the side of a pickup bed and facilitates the handling of heavy
loads. When the boom elevation angle is θ = 40o, the force in the hydraulic cylinder BC is
4.5kN, and this force applied at point C is in the direction from B to C (the cylinder is in
compression). Determine the moment of this 4.5kN force about the boom pivot point O.

4. Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown in figure. Knowing that the balloon exerts
an 800 N vertical force at A, determine the tension in each cable.
5. An exhaust system for a pickup truck is shown in the figure. The weights Wh, Wm
and Wt of the head pipe, muffler and tailpipe are 10, 100 and 50N, respectively and
act at the indicated points. If the exhaust – pipe hanger at point A is adjusted so that
its tension FA is 50N, determine the required forces in the hangers at points B, C and
D so that the Force – couple system at point O is zero.

6. Four tugboats are bringing an ocean liner to its pier. Each tugboat exerts a 5000 N force in
the direction shown. Determine (a) the equivalent force-couple system at the foremast O, (b)
the point on the hull where a single, more powerful tugboat should push to produce the same
effect as the original four tugboats.

7. The weights of the various components of the truck are shown inf figure. Replace this system
of forces by an equivalent resultant force and specify its location measured from B.
8. The direction of the two thrust vectors of an experimental aircraft can be independently
changed from the conventional forward direction within limits. For the thrust configuration
shown, determine the equivalent force – couple system at point O. then replace this force-
couple system by a single force and specify the point on the x – axis through which the line
of action of this resultant pass. These results are vital assessing design performance.

9. Two crates, each of mass 350kg, are placed as shown in the bed of a 1400kg pickup truck.
Draw the free body diagram needed to determine the reactions at each of the two rear wheels
A and front wheels B.
