1 Preface
and do finite element stress analysis for Φ356 CNG steel inner tank ring winding
cylinder for vehicle according to requirement of GB24160-2009 <CNG inner tank
ring winding steel cylinder for vehicle>. Analysis of the basis is the drawing and the
corresponding information supplied by. Table 1 is all internal pressure parameters of
inner tank and composite cylinder, table 4 is winding layer sequence and parameter of
composite cylinders.
ANSYS is a large and world famous finite element analysis software , and it is
recommended by Chinese Pressure Vessel Standards Committee. It can fully meet the
requirements of material and several large deformation analysis. This project use
ANSYS10 to analysis, inner tank using SOLID45 unit, composite layer using
SHELL181 unit. The analysis considers the inner tank material nonlinear and large
deformation geometrical nonlinearity.

2 Calculation model
Geometric size use in the calculation of inner tank as shown in table 2,
composite layer sizes are shown in table 4, finite element mesh as shown in Figure 3.
Boundary conditions: applying symmetry constraint in flat model plane surface,
applying equivalent tensile stress of F= (13.92 × P) / (212-13.92) in the nozzle end
face of cylinders, the bottom of the cylinder applied axial displacement is zero
displacement constraints, cylinder inner wall exerts pressure P.

3 The calculation process and results
● The calculation process
Process 1: Prestressed produced due to composite layer winding tension;
Process 2:Connect with process 1,the cylinders from the 0.0MPa internal pressure,
rise to the inner pressure of 33Mpa (autofrettage pressure);
Process 3: Connect with process 2, internal pressure is dropped from 33.0MPa to
0.0Mpa;
Process 4: Connect with process 3, from the 0.0MPa internal pressure, boost to
20.0Mpa (working pressure);
Process 5: Connect with process 4, from the 20.0MPa internal pressure, boost to
30.0Mpa (hydraulic test pressure);
Process 6: Connect with process 5, from the 30.0MPa internal pressure, boost to
54.0Mpa (the actual minimum burst pressure) ;
● The calculation results
Each load, the ring and Mises stress distribution diagram of inner tank and winding
layer (the inner layer) are shown as figure 4- figure 15.
The process of stress calculation results are shown in Table 5.

4 Requirements and the results of stress distribution
According to the national standard GB24160-2009 requirements: calculation
stress under the actual minimum burst pressure / calculation stress under the working
pressure ≥ 2.75 (fiber stress ratio).
We know from the table: the fiber direction (circumferential) stress is 169.431
MPa under the working pressure (20.0MPa), the fiber direction (circumferential)
stress for 923.56 MPa under the actual minimum burst pressure (54.0MPa), fiber
stress ratio 923.56/169.431=5.48 ≥ 2.75. The maximum tensile stress in the composite
layer is 923.56 MPa when the pressure is 54.0MPa, it is less than the tensile strength
of 930MPa.
We know from the analysis results of stress, the calculated results to meet the
